Adu Bound For Benfica

Adu Bound For Benfica

, Former D.C. United prodigy and lightning rod Freddy Adu is off to Benfica of the Portuguese League, reports Steven Goff at the Soccer Insider. When Adu came to United at the tender age 14, his arrival inspired fanfare within Major League Soccer that has only since been surpassed by some British geezer. After three up-and-down seasons with United, Adu was sent to Real Salt Lake for a major allocation (a powerful tool in MLS... more ›

United Push Unbeaten Streak To Seven, Douse Fire 3-1

Two weeks ago, D.C. United traveled to Los Angeles to play a depleted Galaxy team and were lucky to come away with a disappointing 0-0 tie after Nate Jaqua missed two easy opportunities in front of the United goal. Determined not to fall into the trap of playing down to their competition again, United scored early in their 3-1 victory over the visiting Chicago Fire and never looked back. Fire goalie Matt Pickens bobbled... more ›

United Host Chivas in Cup Semifinal

United's got a big one lined up tonight. Waiting at their doorstep is CD Guadalajara, better known as Chivas. One of the most storied clubs in the Mexican soccer, Chivas have 11 league titles under their belts, currently a record. They also have the distinction of only using Mexican players throughout their history. more ›

Nowak to Leave D.C. United

Nowak to Leave D.C. United

Pending an official announcement (currently broadcast live at United's web site), D.C. United coach Peter Nowak is leaving the team to become the U.S. men's national team assistant coach. United is expected to name Tom Soehn as their new coach. The transition shouldn't be too difficult for the team, as Soehn has been Nowak's right hand man on the bench for the last three years. Nowak's departure doesn't come as a complete surprise. His name... more ›

United Ship Adu, Rimando to RSL

United Ship Adu, Rimando to RSL

D.C. United sent shockwaves through the U.S. soccer landscape yesterday when they traded teen sensation Freddy Adu and 5-year veteran goalkeeper Nick Rimando to Real Salt Lake for backup goalie Jay Nolly, a major player allocation, and future considerations. When we learned of this decision, we were amazed. Any time the league's most recognizable and marketable star is traded, it's bound to turn a few heads. However, the more we think about this deal,... more ›

Morning Roundup: Cruella De Vil Edition

Hey D.C., how ya doin'? We've got some good news and some bad news for mother nature this morning, but it's all good news for you. Just nine days away from the official start of winter, Washington will enjoy another day of temperatures near 60. Remember these days when you're stomping through January snow. Potomac to Get Slightly Less Gross: Looks like the Army Corps of Engineers is finally getting around to meeting a 2003... more ›

Morning Roundup: Don't Fear for the Deer Edition

We're all breathing a huge sigh of relief this morning to find that the two white-tailed deer that were rescued from the Tidal Basin yesterday are doing just fine after having been tranquilized, lassoed, and pulled along the side of a boat to safety. And of course we assume that it wasn't actually the name of U.S. Park Police spokesman Scott Fear that scared the two into jumping into the water. More likely it... more ›

United Tripped Up By Revolution

United Tripped Up By Revolution

D.C. United came into Saturday night's game both optimistically and urgently. An animated crowd of 21,022 cheered enthusiastically as United was presented with the Supporter's Shield. The match at hand would provide them with a quality opponent, the New England Revolution, indicative of the competition they would confront in the rapidly-approaching MLS Cup playoffs. Such a stage would seem the perfect situation to right the ship and make a bold statement before entering the... more ›

Morning Roundup: Making Up For Macaca Edition

Good morning, D.C. How're those new Metro express lanes treating you? We know it's only five stations for now, but we're pretty excited by the prospect of a nearly-50% speed-up through the turnstiles during rush hour. There's nothing more infuriating than finding yourself stuck behind a perplexed tourist who's fiddling with his farecard like a newly-tool-using ape at the beginning of 2001 — unless you count the encounter you just had with him on the... more ›

DC United Host LA Galaxy Saturday Night

DC United Host LA Galaxy Saturday Night

Fresh off of their victory Wednesday night over the New York Red Bulls, MLS leading DC United hope to continue their winning ways Saturday night when they host the LA Galaxy. While the Galaxy's 7-11-5 record may not sound too enticing there are plenty of subplots in Saturday's game that bear watching. Recently departed Santino Quaranta, traded from DC to LA for a future draft pick, will be making his return to RFK. He's... more ›

United Send Red Bulls Packing

United Send Red Bulls Packing

Mired in a 4-game winless slump and experiencing an offensive drought, DC United headed into last night's match against Red Bull New York with a degree of uncertainty. Would United's forwards be able to capitalize on the scoring chances that had slipped by them in past games? Could the team regain its competitive edge? Was it time for another early exit from U.S. Open Cup play? United provided an emphatic answer to these questions,... more ›

Though the region got itself in a tizzy over the record rains of Deluge 2006, there was plenty else that happened. We reported on the RAMMYs, saw a coup d'etat at Politics and Prose, marveled at the Washington Times' new intern blog, and debated whether or not Pierre L'Enfant should go to Congress. We checked out The Roosevelt, discussed Freddy Adu's defection from the District, and found out that heavy rains can cause both... more ›

Freddy, Gilbert Leaving Town?

Freddy, Gilbert Leaving Town?

DC United's 17-year-old phenom, Freddy Adu, has previously expressed his desire to play overseas in a more competitive league. We just didn't think that time would come so soon. Clubcall.com is reporting that Adu will be playing in Europe as early as this January. Reportedly, Adu has been linked to English Premier League giants Manchester United. Given that the team's owner is American Malcolm Glazer (owner of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers), this move makes some... more ›

DC United Season Begins Sunday

DC United Season Begins Sunday

The big sports story of this weekend for area sports fans is going to be the inspiring play of the George Mason men's basketball team as they compete for the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship. Still, we hope that you will spare a thought for your DC United, who open their 2006 season Sunday at RFK Stadium against the New York Red Bulls. Ugh. Yes, DC, the MLS team you love to hate just got... more ›

Adu To Chelski?

Adu To Chelski?

A funny thing happened during our lunch break. After perusing the Post and reading about how Freddy Adu is gearing up for the upcoming D.C. United season (and how his play with the club team will affect his status on the US National Team, which is preparing for this summer's World Cup), we headed over to Deadspin where they linked to an article in The Times Online reporting that "agreements are imminent with the player... more ›

2005: The Year in Review

2005: The Year in Review

Today and tomorrow, we'll be taking the opportunity to look back at the year in D.C. and the year in DCist. We'll retrieve for you what we've determined are the best and most interesting DCist pieces in dining, arts, music, and news. This year we've written over two thousand posts (generating over ten thousand comments), and we figured the best way to start the reminiscence was to bring back for you the most read DCist... more ›

Weekend Sports Roundup: All About Adu Edition

Weekend Sports Roundup: All About Adu Edition

>> Although it's (finally) playoff time in MLS, most of the discussion around DC United centers around 16-year-old Freddy Adu. Last week he complained publicly about his playing time, or perceived lack of it. The next day, Adu met with team officials in an effort to clear the air, but apparently he did not apologize, so he was suspended for United's playoff game on Friday against the Chicago Fire, which ended in a listless... more ›

Freddy Adu Acts His Age?

Freddy Adu Acts His Age?

Ah, the brashness of youth. Yesterday 16-year-old Freddy Adu went on a tirade of sorts, complaining about the amount of playing time he's recieved this year and even (gasp) contemplating playing elsewhere next year. "I got [MLS] player of the week, and the next week I'm sitting on the bench," Adu told the Post. "I'm like, 'What is going on here?' It's frustrating at times when you think you've earned a chance to play on the field and you're over there sitting on the bench." Keep in mind DC United open their playoff schedule on Friday in Chicago against the Fire. more ›

United Bow Out of US Open Cup

United Bow Out of US Open Cup

DC United let one get away last night, losing to FC Dallas 4-1 on penalties in US Open Cup play at the soccer complex in Germantown, Maryland. United had hoped to advance to the Open Cup semifinals for the third time in five years, and appeared to be in control, up 1-0 in the final minute as Freddy Adu sliced deep into the Dallas defense and laid a pass off to an open Brian Carroll... more ›

At RFK, Remembering the Forgettable Griffiths

When the next chapter of Washington's baseball history is written this spring, Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium will once again become a focal point of this city's attention. Since the Redskins moved out in 1997, it has mostly been a soccer field. And no matter how much D.C. United and MLS hype Freddy Adu, chances are you haven't stopped by in some time. As you're standing in line to see the Nationals in the... more ›

Freddy Adu Parties in College Park

Freddy Adu Parties in College Park

DC United soccer phenom Freddy Adu was reportedly present at several University of Maryland keg parties in September, reports the Diamondback. At 15, Adu is the youngest individual to play for a professional American sports team in 100 years-and three years younger than most college freshman. As is typical for parties in College Park, one of the parties was quickly broken up by the police. Quick minded reveler Rob Fitzgerald

usher[ed] Adu to safety and helped the two of them avoid an underage drinking citation. more ›

Much 'Adu' About Nothing

Much 'Adu' About Nothing

The Upstate Life points us to a Diamondback article from this week that indicates that there is underage drinking in College Park. While that is no shocker, what is newsworthy is that a 15-year-old was seen frolicking about parties on Dickinson and College avenues. And not just any 15 year-old, but D.C. United's soccer phenom Freddy Adu. more ›
