All downsizing should be so benign.

Virgin Mobile Tickets Can Still Be Had By Volunteering

This year's Virgin Mobile Festival's plan to give out tickets for free worked like a charm. The concert's organizers say 35,000 free tickets were gobbled up in minutes when they went on "sale" this weekend.

Virgin Mobile Festival Tickets to be Free

We'd heard the rumors and speculated ourselves, and today the folks behind the Virgin Mobile Festival announced that its shortened schedule and new venue this year will have one pretty great thing going for it: it's going to be totally free.

Do you have the option of taking public transportation or riding a bike to work, but still choose to drive for personal reasons? The D.C. Council is asking people like you to pledge to give up your car for just one day tomorrow, Tuesday, Sept. 18, for its first annual Car Free D.C. Day. If you'd like to take the Car Free Pledge, head over to Ward 6 Council member Tommy Wells' site to sign...

It's annoyingly cutesy, but still potentially noteworthy: before you head out to grab your lunch today, consider that popular sandwich purveyor Potbelly is celebrating it's 30th anniversary with something they're calling "Random Acts of Potbelly." Can we assume this will include random acts of giving away free sandwiches? Let's friggin' hope so. Because random acts of slaps across the face would be a lot less satisfying.

We really enjoy giving away free stuff, and so apparently do your favorite local bands. That's why we got together with Cedars to arrange for an EP and ticket giveaway to their show tonight with Scotland's the Cinematics and Chicago's the Changes at the Rock and Roll Hotel! Who loves ya? DCist loves ya.

Hey there area concert goers. Do you like free stuff? You do? Well then I have just the thing for you. Our good friends at Filter Media had a few extra pair of tickets to some upcoming concerts and we talked them into letting us give them to you. We have a trio of giveaways in conjunction with some upcoming area shows:

MONDAY >> Don't be fooled by the picture. That isn't Trent Reznor and his ever-changing group of touring musicians. It's Greg Dulli's pals and labelmates Afterhours, and they'll be playing DC9 with Cedars. Expect tons of sex, drugs, rock and roll and Italian accents. Bravissimo! $8, 8 p.m. TUESDAY >> Hailing from Derry/Donegal on the northwest coast of Ireland, Claire Sproule has been playing guitar and writing songs since she was 14. She lists Tom...

We always tell you where the free concerts are, but just because a concert is free does not mean that it will be good. This week, we are leading with the free concerts because they are so good. Other than the free stuff, there is so much to hear, we have selected a few options from what is less expensive, not sold out, and likely to be good.

FRIDAY: >> The fine folks at the Black Cat are throwing themselves a 13th anniversary party tonight, and bully for them — it can hardly be an argument that the bar and music venue has become a nightlife mainstay for those of us who like our drinks cheap and our juke boxes funky. The convergence of two unlucky symbols (13 and black cats) isn't lost on the staff, who are encouraging you to go ahead...

DCist has paired up with the Boost Mobile RockCorps to bring you news of a great volunteer opportunity, and a shot at winning a brand new toy. It's a marriage of two of our favorite things -- good deeds, and free stuff.

Though the region got itself in a tizzy over the record rains of Deluge 2006, there was plenty else that happened. We reported on the RAMMYs, saw a coup d'etat at Politics and Prose, marveled at the Washington Times' new intern blog, and debated whether or not Pierre L'Enfant should go to Congress. We checked out The Roosevelt, discussed Freddy Adu's defection from the District, and found out that heavy rains can cause both...

The Nats did a nice thing for 15,000 of their closest friends on Sunday afternoon. After soundly defeating the Phillies, 6-0, on a day perfectly suited to the game of baseball (75 degrees, cool breeze, sunshine), the team had a Picnic at the Park for season ticket holders. Now I have not purchased season tickets, but I was with a friend who did, and so I went along for the ride. This sort of mass...

Whether it's pizza, slurpees, or wifi, getting something for nothing is a thrill that few can resist. There's just something about the allure of the freebie that somehow multiplies the value of the object a hundredfold. Every time free cone day rolls around, we all stand in line for more time than it would take to make the ice cream ourselves (including the necessary cow milking). But who are we kidding? We love free stuff, especially when it's edible.

Tonight's the night, folks. Come join us this evening at DC9 if you can, where $6 gets you the music, the free stuff, and the chance to see us all drink beer and dance. Yesterday, Olivia Mancini answered a few questions for us about herself and her band; today we're very pleased to bring you a short question and answer session with The Hard Tomorrows, who'll be finishing the show off tonight. So, tell...

H&M, that bastion of trendy and cheap clothing (and we mean both price and quality) on Friday will host the "grand re-opening" of its downtown store at 1025 F Street, NW. Grand? Re-opening? Now, it’s been a while since we’ve been to H&M, but we weren’t surely we hadn’t missed some huge overhaul?

So, the story goes a little something like this. Once upon a time there was a show called Unbuckled. It was a little get-together we threw, where we invited a couple of our favorite bands and everyone else in the city, and we watched the bands play and gave some stuff away, and the night was generally an unqualified success, like silent velcro or any movie with Sting in it. And we planned to have many more such events, but we kind of got caught up with other stuff.

Thanks to all our readers who responded to Tuesday's contest to win free passes to tonight's screening of Match Point, Woody Allen's newest film. The response was overwhelming, and we loved getting all of your e-mails. Unfortunately, we couldn't respond to each of you to let you know that you didn't win this time, and all winners have already been notified.

From DCist contributor Catherine Andrews: What do you have going this weekend? Here's what caught our eye. FRIDAY: The director's cut of Donnie Darko is opening at Visions Cinema tonight. Check out yesterday's Live Online chat with director Richard Kelly. Neccessary reading: Salon's "Everything you were afraid to ask about Donnie Darko" Hurrah for free stuff! 9:30 Club is having a free concert, featuring Taking Back Sunday, The Honorary Title and Stars Hide Fire. 21+....
