New Whole Foods to Open Up Exactly Where it is Needed Least

Gotta concur with DCmud's sarcasm in reporting this piece of news concerning an expected ribbon cutting next year for a new Whole Foods at the Shops at Wisconsin Place development, located at the Chevy Chase/Friendship Heights nexus.

While the Bethesda-Chevy Chase corridor may seem like a scripted stage setting for the Whole Foods phenomenon, Chevy Chasers have until now had to drive all the way down to Tenley for their organic Gruyere, or eke by (gasp) on Giant or TJ's foodstuffs.
Ruth Samuelson made a handy little map over at Housing Complex to illustrate the point: this actually makes the third Whole Foods location on Wisconsin Avenue, all clustered relatively close to one another. Surely some other neighborhood, like say, Capitol Hill, could use a spot to buy organic arugula sooner than this one. Then again, my feelings on the "Fetishism of Whole Foods" are well established, so it's probably wise not to get too worked up about it.

A new report from the Brookings Institution shows that the D.C. metro area has the most “walkable places” per capita of any American city -- one for every 264,000 people, beating out even New York City for walkability. Visiting Fellow Christopher B. Leinberger says that the Washington region could serve as the model for the direction the country’s other metro areas are heading over the next generation. The Associated Press already picked up on the...

Good morning, Washington. Have you recovered from yesterday's local sports emotional rollercoaster yet? The Nationals bid farewell to RFK, and managed to close out their time there with a 5-3 victory over the Phillies. The Redskins, on the other hand, well ... we might still not be ready to talk about that last drive. Yet despite the despondent football fans across the region this morning, we get the sense that no one is sadder than...

June is coming to a close and so is National Candy Month. I have a big sweet tooth and will look for any excuse to eat more candy. Most of the time the classics will do - Snickers, Reese's Peanut ButterCups, or Jelly Bellies more than satisfy my sugar jones. But every now and then I want something a little bit more exotic; all it takes is a little trip to Friendship Heights to find...

Happy Friday morning, D.C. If you're like us, today is payday, and maybe you're feeling pretty good about the number of digits in your bank account. Perhaps you even plan to go out and make a major purchase this weekend, like say, finally upgrading that crappy stereo system you bought from K-mart before you started college. Maybe you're even smiling at your desk right this second, thinking of how proud you are to have saved...

It's a good year to be a last-minute tax filer in Washington. (As if there's ever a good time to send your hard-earned dollars to the government.) First there was Emancipation Day, now the District Office of Tax and Revenue is granting an automatic two-day extension for filling your D.C. income taxes. This short reprieve is in response to yesterday's wind and rain, which knocked out power around the area. Local tax forms are now...

We hope you had a relaxing, if not warm, holiday weekend, Washington. Mixed in with the egg decorating and good cheer, we sure noticed a lot of grumbling about the ongoing cold snap (along with those flurries on Friday night), so let's get right down to the all-important question: When will this misery end? CapitalWeather.com is breaking it down like so: Most of this week will still see cold temps in the morning, with...

Metro spent two years refurbishing the Friendship Heights bus station to the tune of half a million dollars. The new design was supposed to ease the flow of buses in an out of traffic and make the station more pleasant for riders. It was also part of the development plan for Friendship Heights years ago, when taller, more dense development was only allowed on the condition that a bus terminal would remain linked to Metro's...

Heads up to anyone who may be thinking of even trying to get on the Red Line today, you're in for one heck of a wait. WMATA is reporting that a man was struck and killed by a train at the Bethesda station. DCist tipster Blake sent us word of the incident which occurred at approximately 9:10 a.m. According to the official WMATA statement:

Eyewitnesses report that the man jumped in front of the six-car train, which was headed toward Glenmont station...While the investigation continues, Bethesda station is closed. Trains are sharing one track between the Medical Center and Friendship Heights stations on the Red Line. Customers can expect significant delays in that area.
We don't have any further details of what happened at this time, but this tragic incident is bound to cause long-lasting commuting delays. If anyone has more information or Metro commuting tips, leave them in the comments.

If the new super-posh retail (think Jimmy Choo's, Tiffany's, etc.) and condo construction going on in Upper Northwest have deterred you from venturing further up the western side of the Red Line, it's time to buck up and take a trip to the D.C./Maryland line to Indique Heights -- the new bigger and better outpost of Cleveland Park's Indique. The highly praised work of chef and co-owner K.N. Vinod is worth braving the urine-tinged smell...

With the daily commuter inflows and outflows, a transient residential base, and the interdependence of economies in the metropolitan region, it is understandable that the lines between the District and its neighbors can be a little blurry at times. However, it is safe to say that Cleveland Park is still solidly located within the District. Friendship Heights? Now that’s another story altogether. As always, we want to know what you hear: overheardindc (at) gmail (dot)...

TUESDAY Are you so pissed off at DCist for our marginal abetting of the Death Cab pre-sale sellout that you’re just busting to express your righteous hipster indignation in unrhymed dactylic hexameter? Rail against the machine, dude, at Busboys and Poets' weekly open mic “session.” It all goes down tonight at 9 p.m. Tickets are handed out “approximately one hour” before, and they cost two dollars. Hmmm. We recommend “Indig Nation” as the new name...

Attention Tenleytowners or those who have in the past or are likely to raise a fuss over future development in the Wisconsin Avenue corridor. The District is holding a public meeting tonight to discuss the draft proposal to reshape the corridor. What does that mean? Potential mid- and high-density residential and commercial development on plots of land between Georgetown and the Maryland line that could be upgraded.

Dupont Escalators to Close on Sunday. Because of escalator canopy construction at Dupont Circle, the 19th Street metrorail portal at the south end of the circle will be shut for most of Sunday. Weekend commuters should use the Q Street escalators, pictured in this photo posted by FurCafe in DCist Photos, instead. In 2005, escalators at the following stations will get escalator canopies: White Flint, Stadium Armory, Capitol Heights, Benning Road, Dupont Circle South, Woodley...

Ask DCist. Chevy Chase headshotSo what's the connection, if any, of Chevy Chase the actor and Chevy Chase the [D.C. neighborhood and Maryland] suburb? Is there a proto-Chase? Is it merely a coincidence? Thanks.

In his budget delivered to Congress, President Bush has given an important endorsement of WMATA's plan to build an extention through Tyson's Corner. The agency that oversees such matters has given the rail line from the West Falls Church station to Wiehle Avenue in Fairfax County a "recommended" rating. Considering ridership projections and cost-effectiveness, as the Post reports, the rating makes the project "eligible for 50 percent federal funding." But drivers of the Dulles Toll...

>> As reported by DC Art News, two new galleries have joined the D.C. arts scene. Emma Mae Gallery, founded by Sandra Butler-Truesdale, has opened at 1515 U St. NW. JET Artworks opens Friday in Elizabeth Roberts' old space at 2108 R St. NW. The gallery's inaugural exhibition features the work of Conor McGrady, Greg Murr, Gregory Euclide, Michel Tsouris and Ken Bucklew.

Good morning, Washington. As you can see from this photo of the National Cathedral from the Newark Street gardens taken this morning, it should be a nice day, though according to Capital Weather, rain may be moving in this evening and into the overnight hours.

We were still asleep this morning and didn't realize there were major delays on the Red Line until 7:30 a.m. WMATA has posted a release about the discovery and repair of a section of "defective" tracks between the Friendship Heights and Bethesda stations. From WMATA: A Metro contractor who conducts specialized track inspections while the Metrorail system is closed to customers, identified the problem with a stretch of track between the Bethesda and Friendship Heights...

Two trains on Metro's Red Line bumped into each other this afternoon at the Woodley Park-National Zoo station. The AP reports: Metro spokeswoman Lisa Farbstein said the accident occured at 12:49 p.m., when a train servicing the Woodley Park station, headed in the direction of Shady Grove and was bumped from behind by an empty train. D.C. Fire Department spokesman Alan Etter said emergency crews are headed to the scene. Due to the mishap, the...
