Gas Pipe Rupture Forces Building Evacuations

Several hundred office workers in the vicinity of the 500 block of D Street NW got to go home early today after a construction crew ruptured a gas line in the area this afternoon. Fire crews responded to a call of a large gas leak at about 2 p.m., and several buildings in the area of 6th, 7th & D Streets and Indiana Ave. NW were evacuated as a precaution, according to D.C. Fire/EMS spokesperson Pete Piringer. Some of those streets were also closed to traffic while the Washington Gas Co. worked to repair the leak. Most of the evacuated buildings were cleared for re-entry by about 3:30 p.m., but some streets remained closed for the rush hour. more ›

Gas Leak on Brentwood Rd. NE

Brentwood Road NE is currently closed from Rhode Island Ave. to Saratoga Ave. due to a gas leak, according to District Department of Transportation spokesperson John Lisle. A construction crew working in the area caused the leak when they struck an underground gas line, Lisle said. more ›

Gas Leak at 16th Street and Park Rd. NW

Fire crews responded to a gas main break at 16th Street and Park Road NW at about 9 a.m. this morning. Traffic was backed up on southbound 16th Street while firetrucks blocked one lane, and firefighters shut down a section of the sidewalk on the west side of the street. A strong smell of gas wafted across the intersection, and one firefighter instructed a pedestrian to put out his cigarette when he approached. A 3 inch gas main was struck by a worker operating a backhoe; construction on Park Road between 16th and 17th has been ongoing for weeks. more ›

Plenty of our Flickr contributors went down to enjoy the annual Chinese Lunar New Year Parade on Sunday afternoon. Unfortunately, a lot of folks ended up disappointed by the sudden cancellation of the traditional five-story firecracker display. The lighting of the giant firecracker was finally called off after being delayed for a full two hours due to a suspected gas leak. We've heard from a lot of parade spectators who stood by through the entire delay and were none too pleased to have been let down after waiting so long. D.C. fire spokesperson Alan Etter told the Associated Press that a strong odor of gas appeared to be coming from a manhole near 6th and H Streets NW, and apparently fire officials exercised extreme caution by eventually deciding to the cancel the pyrotechnics. more ›
