No one will be charged in the death of GW grad student and Afghanistan war vet Patrick Casey.
No Charges in Death of GW Student
Froggy Bottom Pub, a G.W. Institution, To Close Next Year
Well known for its inexpensive pitchers of beer and a very amphibian interior, the Froggy Bottom Pub will be displaced next year.
The Saturday Morning Post
Good morning, Washington. For those of you with an extended holiday weekend, it's going to be a beautiful three days. For those of us looking at no more than our perfunctory time-off, relish Saturday and Sunday’s sunshine. Monday’s certain to arrive sooner than we’d like.
G.W. Grad Student's Role In McDonald's Conflict Still Unclear
On Thursday, we reported that a George Washington University graduate student died after hitting his head on a sidewalk when he tried to break up a fight at the McDonald's at 1916 M Street NW. On Friday, a top official of the D.C. police homicide unit contradicted that account, and said 33-year old Army veteran Patrick Casey may have been the aggressor.
G.W. Grad Student Dies After Assault Outside D.C. McDonald's
A 33-year-old George Washington University graduate student who was injured after trying to break up a fight at the McDonald's at 1916 M Street NW has now died.
Report: Police Investigating Weapon Threat on G.W. Campus
According to the Hatchet, D.C. police officers are currently investigating the threat of a weapon on campus around the 900 block of 23rd Street NW.
George Washington University to Print Media: Drop Dead
In yet the latest sign that newspapers are slowly going the way of the buffalo, George Washington University has put an end to its Collegiate Readership Program, in which students got free daily delivery of the The New York Times, The Washington Post and USA Today.
Textile Museum to Move to New G.W. Venue
Today, the Textile Museum announced a new affiliation with George Washington University and a move to the university's Foggy Bottom campus.
It's Graduation Season: Grads, Relatives Invade D.C.
Congrats grads. Today you take your first steps out into the adult world. Gingerly stepping forth into a booming job market and a wide welcoming world with limitless possibilities. As Robert Frost once said, [insert hackneyed quote here]. Blah blah blah blah ...
For those of us long past that relieving moment, this weekend we can relive (or avoid) it as Howard University, George Washington University and Catholic University will hold a trifecta of commencement ceremonies.
The Biggest Donation Is Obviously His Enthusiasm
Yesterday, we (among several others) shared the story of Robert Kasmir, the George Washington University athletic donor who was honored for a five-figure donation during halftime of Saturday's game against Dayton -- then summarily booted from the game after jawing at the referees during the second half. And now, thanks to the miracle of video technology, we can enjoy Mr. Kasmir soaking in his moment in the limelight. Soak it in, man.
Gray Has Experience With Raising Taxes -- On His Fraternity
As Aaron pointed out in the Morning Roundup, Mayor Vince Gray was honored by George Washington University yesterday for his role in integrating the school's fraternity system and playing on an intramural basketball team that was more exciting to watch than the university's varsity squad. (And he was quite the looker at the time, to boot.) The Post article also notes that Gray served two terms as president of his fraternity, during which he struggled, but eventually succeeded in pulling the chapter out of debt. And how did he do so? "[Gray] eventually balanced the books by cutting meal service and raising dues," claims the report. Well, a fraternity is surely a smaller operation than a city, but let's just say that it's good to know that Gray has some experience with balancing budgets -- he'll surely need it come 2012, when the District will be staring down a deficit estimated to hit $500 million. And given that the recent budget deliberations saw spending cuts, it seems appropriate and historically consistent that tax hikes will be next, right?
Bedbugs Found In Five G.W. Residence Halls
George Washington University always finds itself at or near the top of lists lining out the nation's most expensive schools. But I'm willing to wager that most students and parents don't factor in a large one-time cost of dry cleaning linens and clothing into their budgets. That's too bad, because G.W. has bedbugs.
Vince Gray, Then
During his campaign, presumptive Mayor-elect Vince Gray would often introduce himself as a native Washingtonian, mentioning that he attended Dunbar High School and George Washington University.
Click Click: D.C. VegFest 2010
There should be no surprise that this year's D.C. VegFest, which took place this past Saturday on the campus of George Washington University, was a success -- after all, D.C. was recently ranked as the most veg-friendly city in North America. Organizers Compassion Over Killing and the Vegetarian Society of D.C. estimate over 5,000 visitors came to the festival to celebrate and revel in vegetarian delights, including speakers, cooking demos, food vendors and exhibits. Oh, and don't forget the life-size man-carrot. Who said vegetarians don't have a sense of humor?
Lucky-Duck George Washington Grads Study World Cup
While most of us must beg off work or blow off work in order to catch a World Cup matchup, 17 students from George Washington have to observe the games -- there in South Africa -- to further their careers. ABC7 profiles a team of GWU graduate students who are there to study firsthand the economic impact of the World Cup on South Africa, possibly the least developed country to ever host the games. Given the important work they're doing, it's hard to begrudge these students their amazing opportunity. But not impossible.
Mea Culpa: Nursing Job Market Not So Hot Anymore
On Monday, while reporting on a decision by George Washington University to establish a separate School of Nursing, I wrote that it was interesting news because nurses continue to be in high demand, even in the current recession. But reader Brian Schuh, currently a nursing student at Georgetown, emailed to take to me task, citing a Baltimore Business Journal story from last year that refutes that assertion.
Hello, GWU School of Nursing
In these recessionary times, nurses are still in high demand, so it's a significant development that George Washington University has announced plans to establish a separate School of Nursing, as the Washington Business Journal reported on Friday.
Relax, GW Has Not Banned the iPad
A Dow Jones News Wire article from late last week suggested that the George Washington University was among a handful of colleges that were "banning" iPads.
Michelle Obama to Deliver Commencement Speeches at Anacostia High School & George Washington Univ.
Plenty of local love from Michelle Obama, as the White House announced today that two out of three commencement speeches the first lady has agreed to make this year will be right here in the District.
Vincent Gray Awarded GWU Alumni Award
Heads up, local George Washington University alumni: D.C. Council Chair Vincent Gray now represents you in more ways than one. The university's Alumni Association announced that they have selected Chairman Gray to receive one of the University’s Distinguished Alumni Achievement Awards. According to Gray's office, he won't receive the award until an October 1, 2009 ceremony during GWU’s Alumni Weekend.
Breaking News: Detergent is Bad for You
Here's some news that will not make GWU alums proud of their alma mater: the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity apparently used abrasive laundry detergent to lubricate a Slip-n-Slide at a charity event this weekend, sending at least one sorority member to the hospital with chemical burns and severe skin irritation. After the event, university officials sent out an email warning that "Possible symptoms from the laundry detergent could also include shortness of breath, throat closing and severe pain in the genital region..." Yeesh. The event, ironically, raised money for the D.C. Firefighters' Burn Foundation. The Hatchet's article doesn't quote the fraternity president as apologizing (it's certainly possible he did), but quotes him as saying, "We're really fortunate that the women in Greek life on campus really made the event special." Maybe next time read the label, or you know, use water.
GW Student Journalist Found Dead in Dorm Room
The George Washington University GW Hatchet blog is reporting that sophomore Laura Treanor was found dead in her room in the university's Ivory Tower residence hall this morning. Treanor was the The Hatchet student newspaper's contributing Life editor. Initial reports indicate that the death was not a homicide or a suicide, and that the death is not being investigated as suspicious. Treanor was discovered this morning by a roommate.
GW, George Mason Get New Mascots
Looks like there are some changes on the sidelines at some local schools. George Washington had the first appearance of their new Little George mascot during Saturday's exhibition basketball game, and George Mason will be getting a mascot to replace Gunston, the furry green thing, on Monday.
GWU No Longer Most Expensive School in the Country
... it's the second most expensive! Via Consumerist, we learn that Sarah Lawrence College has surpassed George Washington University as the most expensive college in the United States, when combining tuition and room and board. The difference is not just mere pennies, either: Sarah Lawrence now costs $53,166 total for one year, while George Washington runs $50,312. The even bigger drop is in the tuition-only category, which finds GWU knocked down to #6 on the list, while small schools like Bates and Middlebury climbed the ranks. Of course, attending GWU still costs rather a lot of money, no matter how you slice it, but at least it no longer holds the distinction of being the absolute most expensive. In related news: OMFG does it cost a lot of money to go to a private university these days!
Charles Demuth @ GWU's Brady Gallery
Usually when we think of the avant-garde, we think of testing limits and pushing boundaries, or we think of outrageousness and oddness. We also tend to think of Europe, where the movement started and really took off.
Colonials Look to Regroup
One could argue that the GW Colonials men's basketball team put off their rebuilding year for awhile, and now it's caught up to them. Karl Hobbs' team reached #6 in the AP poll and the second round of the NCAA tourney in the 2005-2006 on the backs of Danilo Pinnock, Pops Mensah-Bonsu, Mike Hall, and Omar Williams. When those four left after the season to graduation and the pros, the team was expected to finish in the middle of the Atlantic 10. However, they overperformed (a Hobbs favorite) and won the conference tourney. Their return to the big dance was the team's third appearance in a row.
Reader, Meet Author
Happy New Year! Jerrold M. Post will be at Politics and Prose to read from his latest book, The Mind of the Terrorist. Is there a more depressing way to start the new year than discussing the psychology of terrorism? Only in Washington. 7 p.m.
Take a Study Break with GWU's ReceSs This Weekend
Over in academia, it's finals time, but the receSs improv team over at George Washington University isn't compromising their weekend, which will mark the group's final show of 2007, over it. On their unofficial blog, The Colonialist, they're offering up reasons why their peers shouldn't either. In the past, receSs alums have gone on to pursue real-life comic gigs, including TJ Miller (now on the ABC show "Carpoolers"), Herschel Bleefeld (who landed a role in...
Morning Roundup: Way It Goes Edition
We've reached another Friday, D.C., but if those light flurries that accompanied you on your way into work this morning gave you visions of a leisurely Saturday snowball fight, you'll likely end up disappointed. Very little accumulation is expected from these flakes, and the weekend will see temperatures back in the upper 40s, with a possibility of some light rain on Saturday morning, according to CapitalWeather.com. If this update doesn't satisfy your weather nerd urges,...
