Former Wizards star Gilbert Arenas has never been shy about airing his thoughts on Twitter. In fact, Arenas' stream of consciousness blasts have kind of become the stuff of legend -- you never know what's going to happen or who Agent Zero will throw under the bus.
It's Gilbert Arenas Against The World
More Hope Than A Hopeless Wizards/Bullets History
Terrible, just flat-out terrible. You know how the RZA pronounces the word "ridiculous" at the end of Kanye's "So Appalled"? Yes, that. That applied to this Washington Wizards team. I've seen a lot of bad Wizards/Bullets, teams, but this year's squad has the unique distinction of being one of the worst in franchise history, yet also filled with the most hope. Winning percentage-wise, the current Wiz Kids are tied as the sixth worst in franchise history, and tied for the fourth worst in my lifetime following the franchise. Let travel down memory lane, shall we?
Holy Cow, Get Gilbert Arenas On The Radio More, Please
Gilbert Arenas? Mike Wise? Sports radio? I had some idea that the combination of the three would result in something pretty amazing, but, really, I had no idea.
Gilbert Didn't Complete Me
1988 was a great year to be 13 years old and living in the Washington D.C. area. In March of that year, I saw Michael Jordan play in person for the first time, as his Chicago Bulls played the Washington Bullets at the Capital Center in Landover, Maryland. Jordan scored 25 points, but there were none of the fancy breakaway dunks I had come to appreciate -- still it was a thrill for me to see the man play just a few hundred feet away.
Gilbert Arenas: No Longer A Gunner
People have called Gilbert Arenas a gunner in more ways that one. Now it's probably time to stop.
If Only We Knew How To Quit You, Gilbert Arenas
Preseason NBA basketball is some pretty boring stuff -- which means the the spotlight is all on Gilbert Arenas with his latest head-scratcher. See, the Wizards had their first preseason home game last night (the phenomenal John Wall had 19 and an awesome coast-to-coast layup, by the way) and before the game, Arenas told head coach Flip Saunders that he had a sore knee. Arenas had been complaining about a achy ankle recently, so Saunders scratched Arenas from the lineup and started Nick Young in his place. Young led the team in scoring with 24 points and the team won by 15.
Which apparently Arenas took as the cue he needed to admit that he wasn't actually hurt.
Gilbert Arenas Back at Home
Reporters were camped outside Gilbert Arenas's Great Falls house this morning, waiting for Agent Zero to return home for the first time since he entered a halfway house 30 days ago.
Arenas Sets Off on Road to Redemption
Andray Blatche, who's played great basketball in Gilbert Arenas's absence, told the Associated Press, "Gil's going to come back next season humble." The best that Wizards fans can hope for is that Gilbert Arenas comes back next season . He's had plenty of humbling moments in his career. Who can forget when LeBron James iced Agent Zero at the free-throw line in the Eastern Conference quarter finals back in 2006? And it's not a lack of humility that drove Arenas to bring guns into the Verizon Center. More than anything, what Arenas stands to gain from a stint at a halfway house -- a sentence he began on Friday -- is time off his injury-prone left knee. Last night, Arenas checked into Montgomery County prison for two days of processing and medical screening (and a taste of real prison life) before he transfers to the MoCo Pre-Release Center, where he will sit out the rest of his sentence. He needs to return to basketball physically fit and free of any prison trauma. And for what it's worth, Blatche could stand to deliver a triple-doubles now and then after Gil returns.
Arenas Will Serve Community Service Sentence at MontCo Facility
Some details on where and when Gilbert Arenas will begin his punishment for gun crimes are beginning to surface. According to a report released by the Washington Post this afternoon, Gilbert Arenas will spend a month-long community service sentence at the minimum-security Montgomery County Pre-Release Center near Kensington, MD. Arenas, who pled guilty to felony gun possession charges back in January, will arrive at the facility in the "not-too-distant future" according to Montgomery Department of Correction and Rehabilitation director Arthur Wallenstein. Arenas will also spend two days at the Montgomery County Detention Center in Rockville for intake and processing.
Grunfeld: Arenas Will Be A Wizard Next Season
While GIlbert Arenas managed to avoid a jail sentence on handgun charges yesterday, his NBA future was still in doubt. That is, of course, until Washington Wizards team president Ernie Grunfeld took the mic this evening. Speaking to the press before tonight's game against Utah, Grunfeld confirmed that the team would not be voiding Gilbert Arenas' contract. According to Wizards blog Truth About It, Grunfeld confirmed that “Gilbert’s part of this organization, he’s part of our team and he’s going to be with us next year. We plan to have him back and we plan to have him in uniform.” Grunfeld continued: “We’re not going to void his contract and I’ve said all along, he’s going to be with us. And I think I’ve said that for the last two months.” Six years remain on Arenas' $111 million contract with the Wizards.
Gilbert Arenas Sentenced to 2 Years Probation, 30 Days in Halfway House
Suspended Washington Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas was sentenced to two years of probation today after pleading guilty to felony gun possession earlier this year.
Gilbert Arenas Pens Washington Post Op-Ed
"I have done a number of things wrong recently," writes Agent Zero.
Arenas Asks to Be Suspended for Rest of Season
The Post's Michael Lee reports on the meeting held today between suspended Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas and NBA Commissioner David Stern, and it looks like Agent Zero is officially out for the rest of the season. Arenas reportedly asked Stern for the lengthy suspension, and Stern agreed. Also notable, though not too surprising: 'The same source said that during the meeting, Arenas asked Stern about the possibility of having the remaining four years of his six-year $111 million contract voided, to which Stern replied, "That would be left up to the team."' We'd place a pretty hefty wager that Arenas's Great Falls mansion will be up for sale by this summer. This guy's outta here. UPDATE: Wizards teammate Javaris Crittenton has also been suspended for the remainder of the season.
Arenas Pleads Guilty to Felony Gun Possession
Word from D.C. Superior Court is that suspended Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas has entered a guilty plea to a single felony count of carrying a firearm without a license. City Paper's Mike DeBonis tweets that sentencing has been set for Mar. 26, and that prosecutors have agreed to recommend a sentence on the lowest end of federal guidelines, which in this case carry a maximum of 6 months. That doesn't mean that Arenas will spend six months in jail, though. It will be up to the judge to determine the amount of time he'll have to serve, and whether that sentence might be suspended.
Gilbert Arenas Charged With Felony
Yet another huge story just breaking at this moment: The Washington Post is reporting that Gilbert Arenas has been charged with with carrying a pistol without a license outside his home or business -- which is a felony. As recently as yesterday, Arenas was reportedly seeking to plea bargain down to misdemeanor charges.
Report: Arenas Owned 'Several Hundred Guns'
File with the "should we be surprised?" pile: WTOP reports today that disgraced Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas has "owned several hundred guns," but moved most of those firearms out of his Virginia home before he brought guns into the Verizon Center over a month ago. All of Arenas's firearms were reportedly legally procured, but we're not just talking about some run of the mill weaponry here:
The guns turned over to police include a so-called 'Dirty Harry Revolver' and a gold-plated Desert Eagle -- which is so big and has such a powerful recoil -- no law enforcement agency uses them.Yowza. Revelations like this surely can't help Arenas while an investigation into his locker room confrontation with Javaris Crittenton is still ongoing. Sure enough, TMZ is quoting anonymous sources who say that Arenas is attempting to plead down to misdemeanor gun charges, a deal that could happen as early as today. Such charges might still carry jail time, but would certainly spare Arenas the multiple-year sentence which had been suggested after the story first broke.
Gilbert Arenas No Longer Exists
At least, that is if your only source of such information is signage, videos, and so forth at the Verizon Center during Wizards games. Reports from those in the small crowd in attendance at last night's 104-97 victory over the Orlando Magic indicated that the Phone Booth had been quite efficiently wiped clean of Gilbert Arenas' presence -- Arenas was removed from the pre-game hype video, his jersey was no longer for sale in the team store, and the Wizards mascot now features a star on the back his jersey, instead of Arenas' number zero. Now comes the official word that Adidas is "evaluating" their sponsorship deal with the troubled guard, a predictable move in the post-Tiger endorsement world. But hey, on the bright side, the Arenas story likely indicates the beginning of a new golden age for those who ply in t-shirt parody.
Arenas Statement on His Suspension From the NBA
Earlier today, I called Commissioner Stern to apologize, and I hope we will be able to talk soon. I look forward to the day I can return to basketball. In the meantime, I will focus on dealing responsibly with this serious situation and I will continue to cooperate fully with the investigations by law enforcement and NBA authorities."
NBA Suspends Gilbert Arenas Indefinitely
No matter what you may think of Agent Zero at this point, you gotta admit this is one crappy birthday present:
"Although it is clear that the actions of Mr. Arenas will ultimately result in a substantial suspension, and perhaps worse, his ongoing conduct has led me to conclude that he is not currently fit to take the court in an NBA game," commissioner David Stern said in a statement Wednesday. "Accordingly, I am suspending Mr. Arenas indefinitely, without pay, effective immediately pending the completion of the investigation by the NBA."more ›
Gilbert Arenas's Birthday Video
Tomorrow is Gilbert Arenas's 28th birthday, so in addition to continuing to post a stream of insane updates to his Twitter account that attempt to play off his gun controversy as a big joke (though in fairness, the last message on the subject -- "no im not going to jail i didnt do what they keep writing but stay away from guns..i was wrong for puttn them in my locker" -- makes it seem like Gil is finally taking this thing a little more seriously), the Wizards player is back to posting comedy videos. This time it's a very special birthday episode of the Agent Zero Show, complete with rapping dolls posed in suggestive ways. Probably more or less safe for work, but proceed with some caution.
Arenas: Gun Incident Was 'Misguided Effort to Play a Joke'
Below is the statement circulated today by Gilbert Arenas's attorney on the question of whether the Wizards star brought guns into the Verizon Center. According to the attorney, Arenas met with federal prosecutors and D.C. police detectives earlier today to formally answer questions about the incident. In his press statement, Agent Zero basically admits that the majority of the media accounts on this story have been true, noting that he did bring four guns to work with him, and that he did brandish them inside the locker room on Dec. 21. The only thing Gil disputes are his intentions: he thought having unloaded guns inside the District was OK, and he only meant "to play a joke on a teammate."
And Now, A Few Words On Guns And Basketball Players
Yesterday, I was mentally preparing myself to write about how Gilbert Arenas had gone and reneged on his ridiculous pledge to not to tweet until he got one million followers. Then, something much more controversial happened -- allegedly, of course.
Gilbert Arenas Looking for 1 Million Twitter Followers by Not Tweeting
The AP picked up on Gilbert's latest antics, as did Dan Steinberg, who interviewed teammates about the quest, eliciting an eye-rolling response from Brendan Haywood. Teammate JeVale McGee helped Gil get the word out -- but we only mention that because his Twitter name is BigDaddyWookie.
Last Night's Action: The Arenas and Ovechkin Power Hour
Wizards 102, Mavericks 91: Something tells me that the Wizards are going to be a real interesting team this season: new coach, a whole host of new players, and old players returning with the grudge of last season's epic failure hanging over their heads as motivation. But for whatever reason, the Wizards' hopes seem to always rest on the back of Gilbert Arenas. And man, the old Gilbert was back last night: dishing dimes, driving to the hoop with strength and finesse, and reminding us of that guy whom you could have made an argument for as the best fourth quarter player in the league three years ago. Gil had 29 points and nine assists in the Wizards season-opening 102-91 win on the road in Dallas. Of course, it wasn't all Agent Zero -- new boss Flip Saunders has stressed defense during the offseason, and Washington held the Mavs to only 39% from the field. Andray Blatche, Randy Foye, and Caron Butler also chipped in double digits. Dirk Nowitzki (and his long hair) paced Dallas with 34.
Last Night's Action: A Sporting Smorgasbord
So much for the "action" part of this post. The only professional sporting involving a team from the area last night was an exhibition basketball game; the Wizards won -- Gilbert Arenas had 24 and Antawn Jamison had 15 and 11 -- but c'mon, who really cares about an exhibition NBA game? Yes, although October may be one of the best months on the national sporting calendar, we in Washington are in a bit of a lull. The Redskins are pathetically struggling to make it through the easiest schedule stretch in NFL history at .500. The Capitals are on their first slump of the year, though it's still early. Our local college football teams, for the most part, are nothing to call home about, and hoops doesn't really kick in for another month or so. D.C. United is winding down a disappointing campaign, the Wizards are still in first gear, and the Nationals are stuck wondering how they can get their city to watch them on TV.
Arenas Still Getting the Star Treatment
Via Deadspin, looks like Madame Tussauds Wax Museum unveiled a Gilbert Arenas statue yesterday. Agent Zero paid lip service to the tourist attraction that immortalized him in wax:
"It is an honor to join the ranks of sports icons such as Muhammad Ali and Tiger Woods by being immortalized in wax at Madame Tussauds Washington D.C.," Arenas said. "Like the Wizards, Madame Tussauds has become a fixture in the nation's capital and one that I'm proud to be a part of."At first we balked at the notion that Madame Tussauds, which was recently forced to slash their admission prices from $18 to $10 because no one was going there, could be compared to the Wizards. But then we remembered how bad the team is this year.
No One on Jeopardy Knows Who Gilbert Arenas Is
Dan Steinberg posted this funny Jeopardy clip over on the Bog, where none of the contestants were aware of any of Wizards star Gilbert Arenas's nicknames. Maybe the often injured guard has been out of the national limelight a little too much over the past two seasons? Of course we love Agent Hibachi no matter what, and if you haven't seen it yet, be sure to read about the adorable way in which Arenas recently proposed to his girlfriend.
Please Please Let Gilbert Arenas Do a Reality Show
It's all speculation and rumors at this point, but this is one potential reality TV show we're happy to hype. Mr. Irrelevant caught Wizard's star and highly trained professional blogger Gilbert Arenas calling in to 106.7 WJFK’s Big O and Dukes show, where at some point, he mentioned that he's been approached to do a reality show.
Should He Stay or Should He Go?
True to his word, yesterday Washington Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas opted out of the final year of his contract, leaving $12.8 million on the table in the hopes of signing a longer and more lucrative deal. Whether that will be with the Wizards remains to be seen. Arenas played only 13 games this year, his season cut short by a nagging knee injury, leaving open the question of whether any team will pay top dollar for a player who has not yet demonstrated that he is fully healthy.
White Out, Stevenson Propel Wizards Past Cavs in Game 3
The NBA playoffs is all about adjustments. After their performance in Game Two, the Wizards needed quite a few and head coach Eddie Jordan responded in kind for Game Three. Gilbert Arenas was added to the starting lineup, the team switched a majority of its defensive matchups, and the result was a resounding 108-72 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers that likely had most fans at home on the couch switching over to Lost at 10 p.m. The 36-point victory set a club record.
