Mountain Lion Spotted in Glover Park, Cougars Still Found in Clubs

The 'burbs of D.C. can be a harrowing place for the uninitiated. Things to fear: games of chicken with deer, falling trees, cougars on the hunt (the kind wearing leopard print skirts). So not too many eye brows were raised when several McLean Gardens residents spotted a large cat, supposedly a mountain lion, last week. more ›

Apartment Fire in Glover Park

A elderly man was rescued from an apartment fire in Glover Park earlier this morning. The fire broke out at around 10 a.m. in a first floor unit of a three-story apartment building at 2316 40th Place NW. D.C. Fire/EMS spokesperson Pete Piringer said firefighters pulled the unconscious man, who is approximately 70 years-old, out of the apartment under pretty heavy smoke conditions. Rescue workers successfully resuscitated the man and he was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition. The fire, which has since been knocked down, is said to have caused significant damage, but was apparently confined to the one apartment. more ›

Mid-Morning Roundup: Barely There Edition

Good morning, Washington. We're getting off to a late start this holiday week morning, which is really just as well, since there's not too much local news to report anyway. But let's get the ball rolling with a few stories ... more ›

old suspender signLast week's comment section was full of goodness (and a technical glitch, sorry). From schools to traffic to illegal second timeouts, there was plenty to go around. Morning Roundup: Meat Market Edition

Good morning, Washington. Glover Park's unlikely strip club row along Wisconsin Ave. saw a scary crime over the weekend, as police are still looking for a suspect after an employee at Good Guys was doused in gasoline and set on fire by an angry customer. The victim, a 26-year-old man, has third degree burns over 80 percent of his body and is currently listed as stable but critical. The assailant had been kicked out of... more ›

Coalition of the Swilling: Bourbon

Coalition of the Swilling: Bourbon

Written by DCist contributor Eric Denman The strip of 18th Street between Kalorama and Columbia is notorious for bars serving cheap beer, takeout joints serving huge slices of pizza, and the resulting explosion of drunken sloppy pizza inhalation. A few places on this strip break the mold, though, and Bourbon is one of them. An outpost of the popular spot in Glover Park, Bourbon is a haven for those seeking to escape the monotony that... more ›

Matchbox Coming to the Hill As if we needed any more proof that Barracks Row is flexing its muscle in bringing business to the Hill. But, we have it anyway. Last week's TomChat gave us the news that Matchbox, the over-popular Gallery Place pizza and mini-burger heaven, has signed a lease for a second location along Barracks Row—521 8th Street SE to be precise. According to Tom, the owner expects the new place to open... more ›

Buy Indie: Logan Hardware

Written by Buy Indie's Vince Wadhwani It's easy to justify going to an independent clothing boutique to find a unique outfit. After all, who wants to walk into a bar wearing the same thing as everyone else? But when it comes to our housewares and hardware, the equation often becomes a lot less complicated. Though you may not find a pink toolbelt over at the Home Depot, you also won't find too many people fretting... more ›

Part of their celebration of Jewish American Heritage Month, they're sharing the story of Fivel and his cheese-paved streets with the next generation. Breaking News: Georgetown Public Library Ablaze

News on the DCist tip line and NBC4 is that the Georgetown Branch of the D.C. Public Library is on fire. The building, on the 3600 block of R St., NW, is currently under renovation. Beginning at 12:45 this afternoon, we could see the smoke from the western edge of Dupont. The library was built in 1935 and has a number of historical documents and paintings which fire fighters are trying to save. NBC4 reports... more ›

Overheard in D.C.: When Irish Eyes are Drunken

Overheard in D.C.: When Irish Eyes are Drunken

We're torn here at Overheard over how to feel about St. Patrick's Day. On the one hand, it's a pretty transparent excuse to get blind drunk, usually for people who'd be doing that on any given weekend anyway. It's just that on March 17th, they get to do it while wearing green and engaging in mildly to egregiously offensive stereotypes of an entire nation. I've always thought that, just to be fair, the Irish... more ›

Staccato's Abrupt Last Note

Staccato's Abrupt Last Note

After six years of adding to the eclectic flavor of the intersection of 18th and Florida NW, word comes to us this week that Staccato is closing its doors forever next month. Staccato has always sort of been the Little Club That Could, hosting aspiring musicians from a variety of genres in its no-frills, teeny, converted-townhouse venue. more ›

Morning Roundup: When Animals Attack Edition

Morning Roundup: When Animals Attack Edition

So suddenly it's chilly? Yesterday we were all sweaty messes, but today, with highs predicted to stay in the 60s, we're wearing sweaters. All this temperature-related confusion has led us to look longingly at the Southwest Airlines web site, since the airline finally began service from Dulles this morning. Cheap flights to Vegas are looking pretty sweet. And while we're of course very sad to be reminded of the demise of our hometown airline, we take some comfort knowing that the airline that replaced it actually trains its flight attendants be snarky. Who needs an assigned seat when you've got that much sass on your hands? more ›

Morning Roundup: Dirty Massage Parlor Edition

Sex-Slave Trafficking Ring Broken Up: We'd always heard rumors that certain massage parlors in the District offered, ummmm, "happy endings" and other such services. Apparently, the rumors were true. Federal officials yesterday arrested 31 people along the east coast involved in a sex-slave trafficking ring that forced Korean women to work as prostitutes in massage parlors and spas, some of which were located in the District. Four men were arrested in the District following raids... more ›

Tom Knott vs. Wisconsin Avenue, Round 2

Tom Knott vs. Wisconsin Avenue, Round 2

It was on December 8 that Washington Times Metro columnist Tom Knott used his perch to describe an ongoing feud between Town Hall, a new and upscale watering hole in Glover Park, and the bar's neighbors. It was also in this infamous column that Knott described the stretch of Wisconsin Avenue where Town Hall has set up shop as a "red-light district" and, even more poetically, as such: ...a fading commercial strip that features two... more ›

Mid-Who?

Mid-Who?

We first heard the name "midtown" used to refer to a neighborhood in D.C. by a friend who occasionally frequented the clubs along Connecticut Avenue between Farragut Square and Dupont Circle. Other friends have frowned on the term, arguing the name was simply lifted from New York. We're split on the term: it can be a useful descriptor, though we tend to shy away from the New York-D.C. comparisons the word invites. Do you think D.C. has a "midtown"? more ›

Morning Roundup: Weird Washington Times Edition

Morning Roundup: Weird Washington Times Edition

We often flip through the Washington Times, sometimes for some comic relief, sometimes to see how the conservative newspaper views local news. In perusing its pages today, we came across a column written by Tom Knott, the Times' answer to the Post's well-known and well-liked Metro columnist Marc Fisher. Today Knott -- often known for taking some creative license with his writing -- describes a conflict between a neighborhood bar and residents who want it... more ›

DCist Interview: Sam Brooks

DCist Interview: Sam Brooks

After college, most twenty-somethings move their way into the working world of offices and cubicles for the first time, alternately laboring furiously, scouring the internet for entertainment during slower hours, and attending any number of post-work happy hours. Sam Brooks bucked this trend -- at 24, he ran for public office. Surprising the District's political establishment, Brooks jumped in the race for an at-large seat on the City Council, coming in third to challenger and... more ›

August's last weekend has come and gone. We hope you spent it well. We know we did, and we didn't even get to everything we had planned. The photo was snapped by Melissa during Saturday's rain showers. Nothing compared to Category 5 Katrina bearing down on New Orleans as we type. Capital Weather is keeping everyone updated. If you have friends or family in Katrina's path, please encourage them to stay safe and evacuate. This... more ›

Town Hall Opens in Glover Park

Town Hall Opens in Glover Park

We were pleasantly surprised when we were invited to the "soft" opening of Town Hall, a new restaurant in Glover Park at 2218 Wisconsin Avenue. The location is seen to the left earlier this summer, before the remodeling. Back in May we had written about the difficulty of the owners to secure an extension of their liquor license. After some carefully lobbying of the neighborhood ANC by the restaurateurs - and an increasingly vocal lobby in favor of the business organized through the neighborhood Yahoo Group - the ANC voted to temporarily extend the hours for a trial period. more ›

There have been quite a few interesting photos on DCist Photos in the past few days. People have posted a photo of the dugout after the congressional softball game, a scene from last night's show at the Hirshhorn, a couple photos from Sleater-Kinney at the 9:30 Club, this photo of the opening of a show organized by the D.C. user group on Flickr, and even this snap from the Ted Leo concert. More Squeaky Brakes After 3:30 a.m.

WMATA is set to implement some new schedules on a select number of bus lines starting Sunday. While the complete information can be found here, we'll highlight some changes on the D.C. routes affected. D2/Glover Park-Dupont Circle Weekdays, buses will run every 10 minutes during the morning and afternoon peak hours. On Friday nights after 1 a.m., buses will run every 37-38 minutes. And for the last-departing drunk buses from Connecticut Avenue and Q Street... more ›

That Squeaky, Squeaky D2

That Squeaky, Squeaky D2

Most residents of upper Georgetown, Burlieth, and Glover Park are familiar with WMATA's D2 bus route. This route serves as a circulator between Glover Park and Dupont Circle you may be familiar as the short bus with squeaky breaks. "Short," because WMATA uses the Orion II (also seen in service in the city on some of the N routes, the M4 and the 98 - seen here in an image from this webpage) for the route, and "squeaky" because the frequent stops in the route through residential neighborhoods quickly converts the brake pads to shrill noisemakers. more ›

Good evening, D.C. This weekend was certainly hot. Capital Weather's forecast indicates more of the same, with a chance of storms for much of the week. Iranian Travel Tips From DCist

Iranian Travel Tips From DCist

When we were walking up Wisconsin Avenue earlier today, we came across some protesters standing outside Studio Infinity at W Place in Glover Park. Our first thought was, what's the deal, are the people protesting cruelty to older people? (When this DCist used to live nearby, Glover Park residents often gawked at the large oversized posters in the window of the wellness center showing an older woman on an awkward wooden contraption that always looked... more ›

David Enders at Politics and Prose

David Enders at Politics and Prose

Pardon us for shamelessly plugging the book of this DCist's childhood friend and college newspaper colleague, David Enders. The only real connection to D.C. that we know of is that Enders wrote portions of "Baghdad Bulletin" from the basement of our old place in Glover Park while on hiatus from the Mideast. But in Washington, there is certainly interest in Iraq policy, so we encourage you to come out Wednesday for Enders' 7 p.m. book signing at Politics and Prose at 5015 Connecticut Ave. more ›
