Congrats grads. Today you take your first steps out into the adult world. Gingerly stepping forth into a booming job market and a wide welcoming world with limitless possibilities. As Robert Frost once said, [insert hackneyed quote here]. Blah blah blah blah ...
For those of us long past that relieving moment, this weekend we can relive (or avoid) it as Howard University, George Washington University and Catholic University will hold a trifecta of commencement ceremonies.
It's Graduation Season: Grads, Relatives Invade D.C.
Congratulations, You Weren't Born Four Years Later
Oh, so many happy students receiving their expensive pieces of parchment on the National Mall today tomorrow! In addition to smiling ear-to-ear as they complete four years of undergraduate study, said grads are, if they read the Post this morning, probably just excited that they graduated from high school in 2006 and not 2010.
Michelle Obama to Deliver Commencement Speeches at Anacostia High School & George Washington Univ.
Plenty of local love from Michelle Obama, as the White House announced today that two out of three commencement speeches the first lady has agreed to make this year will be right here in the District.
DCPS Graduation Rate Falls Below 50 Percent
A new study out today by Education Week researchers has found that the on-time graduation rate for D.C. public school students fell to an appalling 48.8 percent in 2006, a drop of more than eight percentage points from the previous year. In other words, in 2006, more D.C. students had dropped out of high school than graduated.
Michelle Obama to Deliver Commencement Address at D.C. Charter School Today
Today, graduating seniors at Washington Mathematics Science Technology Public Charter High School will hear advice from First Lady Michelle Obama at their commencement at Howard University. Student Jasmine Williams first wrote to Obama asking her to speak, and has been chosen to introduce her to the students. "I am probably going to practice hundreds more before Wednesday," Williams told WJLA about her introduction. The charter school is D.C.'s only open enrollment public school to meet Adequate Yearly Progress targets under No Child Left Behind in both math and reading for the last two years.
College Grads Moving to D.C. in Droves
Hey, great news for those of you who have found yourselves un- or underemployed in this rough economy ... thousands of recent college graduates are moving to Washington to compete with you for jobs and housing! And they're willing to work for nothing and overpay to live in rooms the size of closets! Hooray! We kid (a little, anyway), naturally. Of course we want to welcome these youngsters and encourage the continued growth of our city. Besides, as the Examiner notes in its article: "the market was significantly better for those with at least a couple of years of experience, or a master’s degree." So suck it, graduates!
Overheard in D.C.: Graduation
It's that time of year: graduation for area collegians and other students. Four years (or more?) of hard work, with possibly some fun, is coming to an end. That means fewer exams, fewer frat parties, fewer all-nighters. Mom and Dad are glad their tuition dollars earned something. Aunt and uncle and Grandma are in town too, probably going to some fancy restaurant, and you have a big black robe thing on in the hot sun, plus a hangover. And after spending a lot of money, maybe at America's most expensive college, it's time for goodwill.
