Team DCist is feeling mighty fine about the awesome artwork we left on the walls at Browne Education Campus as part of Saturday's Servathon.
Servathon 2011: Team DCist Browne Bombers
Last Chance To Register For This Saturday's Servathon
Today is your final chance to register for Servathon 2011, the annual region-wide service day commencing that will take place this Saturday morning. Team DCist will join other groups in giving the Browne Education Campus -- a Pre-K through 8th grade school in Carver/Langston -- an upgraded look, painting the walls and otherwise beautifying the school.
Servathon 2011: Time Is Running Out to Register
Time is running out to be a part of Team DCist in Servathon 2011. We've gotten word from Browne Education Campus that they need a few more volunteers to finish all the good work they have for us at their school on April 16, and it isn't too late to for you to register and join us. The registration deadline is Monday, April 11.
Paint the Town with DCist at Servathon
With another successful Exposed opening in the books, DCist can now turn our focus to one of our favorite parts of spring. Join Team DCist on Saturday, April 16, as we volunteer during Greater DC Cares' Servathon 2011! We'll be sprucing up the Browne Education Campus in the Carver/Langston neighborhood, just east of Trinidad and the Atlas District, painting the school in vibrant colors to give "a comprehensive new look to instill pride in its students and to make students, staff and visitors to feel welcome and energized as soon as they walk through the school doors."
Sign Up for 9/11 National Day of Service
President Barack Obama has declared that September, 11, 2009, the eighth anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, will mark the first 9/11 National Day of Service, and Greater DC Cares has responded by organizing a large number of volunteer and service opportunities for Washington area residents. Individuals and teams may both sign up online to serve on projects ranging from spending time with seniors to cleaning up Hains Point to preparing meals for the chronically ill. A $25 per person registration fee covers the costs of the event in addition to helping fund Greater DC Cares all year. Registration is open now through Tuesday, September 8.
Join Team DCist for Servathon 2008
Even with Mayor Fenty's re-organization plan of D.C. public schools, we all know they're still struggling, and not just academically. That's why DCist is organizing another team this year to participate in the annual Servathon, organized by Greater DC Cares and their sponsor Fannie Mae, which is focusing only on fixing up school facilities this year. The date to roll up your sleeves is May 3.
About Tonight
>> Terrific local volunteer organizers Greater DC Cares are hosting a happy hour tonight at Mackey's with what looks to be free or deeply discounted beers provided by sponsor Samuel Adams. 6 to 8 p.m. Non-volunteers welcome to attend and learn more about the organization.
How Will You Commemorate Sept. 11?
Just as a new videotape from Osama bin Laden was released over the weekend, tomorrow marks the sixth anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on New York and the Pentagon, and as in year's past, there will be events, speeches and vigils across the country to remember the dead. But with more time now between us and that tragic day, it does seem as though the way we want to honor the anniversary...
Go Home Already: Better Luck Next Time
>> "A federal appeals court ruled today that I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, Vice President Cheney's former chief of staff, must report to prison shortly to begin serving his 30-month sentence for lying to federal investigators about his role in leaking a CIA officer's identity." [WaPo] UPDATE: Man, we honestly thought that first comment was a joke for a minute! Bush has commuted Libby's prison sentence. >> Please Add L2 to NextBus, K? Thx [The...
Servathon 2007 Recap
For almost four hours, we covered the worn-out and marked-up beige walls with fresh paint, along with other volunteer teams from McGraw-Hill, Métier consulting group in Georgetown and Hine's Principal Willie Jackson. He arrived in his gray sweat suit, ready to present his charming PowerPoint slideshow of his faculty and student body to get us pumped up. There were paint rollers to share, and even a cherry picker for the hard-to-reach spots. Let’s just say, the Hine students in Phys. Ed today, shooting hoops and avoiding sit-ups, had a pretty snazzy gym.
Join Us for Servathon 2007
We know that despite the grumbling, despite the lack of voting rights, despite the indie rock neighborhood battles to the death, even despite the fashion sense or lack thereof, you guys love this town just as much as we do. That's why this year we're starting our own team for the Greater Washington Servathon 2007, the massive, annual volunteer event presented by Greater DC Cares and AOL. In addition to volunteering our time on either May 4 or 5, each participant is asked to raise just $100 by asking friends and family to donate to the cause. All the money, including your registration fee of $20 (which goes towards your $100) goes to help local nonprofit agencies run throughout the year. This year, Servathon hopes to raise $400,000 and provide 11,000 volunteer hours fixing up the community.
