White House North Lawn Fountain: Sufficiently Green

White House North Lawn Fountain: Sufficiently Green

Last year, we were kinda disappointed with the shade of green that the White House chose to dye the North Lawn fountain in honor of St. Patrick's Day. Even when the White House sent along an image taken from a different angle, it still didn't measure up to 2009, when the pool was about as green as you can get. Well, we're pleased to see that this year, the White House ditched the sea foam/pea soup nonsense and returned to the freakishly neon shade of two years ago. more ›

Photo Booth: Alexandria's St. Patrick's Day Parade

It's never too early -- even if you're an Imperial Stormtrooper -- to celebrate a slice of the Irish life. Even though St. Patrick's Day won't officially be here for another ten days, that wasn't going to stop Alexandria from getting their green on and marching down King Street on Saturday. more ›

Caps Briefing: A Bit Draughty In Here

Tonight at 7 p.m. you can watch the first round of the NHL draft on Vs. In a week where the Caps have received some of their annual propers with one of two available MVP awards (Alexander Ovechkin), comeback player of the year (former Capital Jose Theodore), and first team NHL all star nods (Ovechkin and defenseman Mike Green), this is just one more reliable sign that summer is here and hockey isn't. more ›

White House Photo Shows Fountain as Slightly Greener

White House Photo Shows Fountain as Slightly Greener

In response to DCist's accusations that the White House punted on its green dye job in the North Lawn fountain this year, White House Director of Online Programs Jesse Lee sends us this, more authoritative image. More green than seafoam, to be sure. Sort of a pea soup. But still not brilliant, almost neon green like last year. more ›

White House Fountain Green Again for St. Paddy's Day ... Sorta

White House Fountain Green Again for St. Paddy's Day ... Sorta

The Associated Press offers up this photo as evidence that the White House has once again dyed the water in the North Lawn fountain green for St. Patrick's Day. Except, call me crazy, but it doesn't look particularly green. more ›

Local Venture Rewards Conservationists

Local Venture Rewards Conservationists

We first heard about Earth Aid last autumn, when the D.C.-based group enlisted several D.C. Council members to launch a green rewards network. Earth Aid encourages residents to lower their utility usage by helping to monitor their electric, natural gas, and water bills. Consumers earn points, redeemable for rewards from local business partners, when their usage drops a certain amount below their own personal baseline. One point can be earned for every kilowatt hour of electricity, 10 cubic feet of natural gas, or 20 gallons of water saved. more ›

Mayor's Conservation Corps Blankets Neighborhoods With Trash

Lots of reports came in yesterday that one half of the heralded "green" arm of the city's Summer Youth Jobs Program, the Mayor's Conservation Corps, had hit the streets around town to pass out paper fliers that are designed to hang on people's doors, except that many of them just ended up as trash on the street. Head over to Scott's Take for the best coverage we've seen so far. more ›

Redskins Continue Streak, Beat Back Vikings Challenge

Redskins Continue Streak, Beat Back Vikings Challenge

POTG.jpgWell ain't this a kick in the pants? The Washington Redskins, faced with having to take the same long cut to the playoffs that they did the last time they found themselves all but eliminated and facing a slew of teams suddenly willing to play dead, took their act on the road to Minnesota and won 32-1421, in a game that was only briefly tense and was basically decided by an alert eye on the sidelines and a well-timed challenge by Joe Gibbs. more ›

Temperance Hall Out; Looking Glass Lounge In

Temperance Hall Out; Looking Glass Lounge In

Fans of Petworth bar Temperance Hall better get up there for their Sazerac cocktails as soon as possible—the bar is on its way out. Don't throw out your arms in plaintive questions to the heavens yet, though. While the bar will go, a bar will stay; the property has been sold to the folks behind Columbia Heights' The Wonderland Ballroom. Following a tip from Prince of Petworth, we caught the Wonderland owners, Matthew McGovern... more ›

National Gallery of Art May Expand

National Gallery of Art May Expand

Over at Modern Art Notes, blogger Tyler Green has the (hilariously named) MANscoop that the National Gallery of Art is in negotiations to expand across the street from its current location on Constitution Avenue into the Federal Trade Commission building. The deal isn't sealed yet, but Green's sources sound pretty confident that the museum will be moving over to the space in time for a 2012 opening. MAN has a decent history of the two... more ›

Major Delays on Green Line, Person Struck by Train

If you're heading out of the office to hop on the Green line at this very moment, may we suggest a bus? An unidentified man was struck by a train at 4:40 p.m. at the Fort Totten station and Metro put out the word to expect major delays. From WMATA: (Green line) trains are single-tracking through the area, taking turns headed in both directions between West Hyattsville and Georgia Ave-Petworth Metrorail stations. Shuttle buses have... more ›

Week Around the -ists

Week Around the -ists

The Holiday season is in full swing in NYC, with holiday lights in Brooklyn, a giant snow globe in Bryan Park and Chanukah specials for ham. One citizen decided to go vigilante on annoying car alarms, a murder suspect used a fake Asian accent on the stand and a video of a man being beaten up by teenage girls on a subway shocked the city. And we interviewed soon-to-be-leaving-Gawker editor Choire Sicha, who said,... more ›

Metro Employees Indifferent to Green Line Assault

WJLA/ABC7 is reporting on the story of an assault on Metro's Green line over the weekend that's both upsetting and frustrating. The victim reportedly received no assistance from station managers when she attempted to report the incident. The victim, a woman, was assaulted by a man who began pushing his body against hers just after she boarded the train car. When she protested and tried to move away from the alleged assailant, he grabbed her... more ›

Caps Briefing: No More Futzing Around

This weekend the Capitals won their first two games under new head coach Bruce Boudreau. WashingtonCaps.com Senior Writer Mike Vogel announced that Boudreau had turned the team around by fixing the power play. This is true, but Vogel writes that he fixed it by "promoting Nicklas Backsrrom (sic) and Mike Green to the first unit and moving Alex Ovechkin up to his more customary forward spot from the point, where he had been stationed for... more ›

Caps Briefing: How Worthless Are They?

Caps Briefing: How Worthless Are They?

According to Forbes magazine, the Washington Capitals are the third most worthless team in the National Hockey League. This is a big step up from last year, when they were number one! Of course, being businessmen and not hockey fans, the boys at Forbes have failed to take into account the kinds of younger, developing players that the Caps hold, ready to carry them to success either this year or in the immediate future. If... more ›

Redskins Fumble Away Opportunities in Green Bay

Redskins Fumble Away Opportunities in Green Bay

Ugh. Really. I'm at the point now where I never want to see Washington attempt another wide receiver end around again. While the play had its heyday about twenty years ago, I cannot remember the last time Washington executed the offensive gimmick in a satisfying way. Surely there is a successful occasion of its execution that a mind untrammeled by the frustration of this past weekend might recall (feel free to have your way with... more ›

Preview: Poet Simon Armitage @ Olsson's

Not just anyone can update "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight," one of English literature's oldest works -- originally written in Middle English -- into modern verse. Of course, Simon Armitage, who will be reading from his works at Olsson's Old Town tonight, isn't just anyone. In Britain, where... more ›

Should We Rename the Navy Yard Metro Stop?

Should We Rename the Navy Yard Metro Stop?

WTOP's Adam Tuss asks an important question: When the new Nationals stadium opens in the spring, fans will head to the Navy Yard stop on the Green line -- even though the Stadium-Armory station on the Orange and Blue lines will be the only stop with the word "stadium" in it. Couldn't there be a lot of confusion on game days? Apparently, WMATA hadn't thought of this until Tuss asked them about it. It does... more ›
