Foggy Bottom Whole Foods To Open September 6
We learned last year that Foggy Bottom would be the home of the fourth Whole Foods Market in the District proper, but news comes today that the grocery will officially open next month.
Ground Broken on New H Street Development
Several District officials, including Mayor Vince Gray, were on hand yesterday as the developers of 360º H Street, the 290,000-square-foot mixed use development along H Street NE which will house hundreds of luxury apartments and a new Giant grocery store, broke ground.
Harris Teeter, New Craft Brewery Coming to The Yards
You know it's a big deal when Mayor Vince Gray breaks out the TelePrompTer -- this morning, Gray talked up the specifics on the retail portion of the new Yards development along the Capitol Riverfront, which will include a new Harris Teeter, several restaurants and a craft brewery from Neighborhood Restaurant Group.
A Harris Teeter to Brookland?
Sure, it might have been rodent-infested, but the old Safeway on Rhode Island Avenue NE was still the grocery of choice for many Brookland residents before it closed in March 2010. And even though a Yes! Organic Market on 12th Street NE is a fine option for some, the residential neighborhood could certainly support a supermarket. How about Harris Teeter?
Receipt Checks Could Come To All D.C. Safeway Stores
Yesterday, when we wrote about the Waterfront Safeway instituting a receipt-check policy, many commenters argued that the policy was something that would be good for the store, which has apparently been struggling to stop shoplifters. But Jenny Rogers reports today that Safeway spokesperson Craig Muckle said the policy "could be rolled out at all District Safeway stores by the end of the year."
Rendering Provides First Look At New Shaw Giant
Developers of CityMarket at O -- the long-awaited, multi-million dollar development project that will rise at the intersection of 8th and O Streets in Shaw -- released some renderings on the project's blog yesterday afternoon.
Power Outage At P Street Whole Foods
Trying to pull together the materials for a last minute Thanksgiving meal this afternoon? We tried to lend a hand -- but it's going to be tough sledding if you need to buy anything from the Whole Foods at 1440 P Street NW this afternoon. The power went out at the grocery around 2:30 this afternoon, and has come back on...kind of. According to an employee at the store, all the registers are still down as of 2:45 -- so you are more than welcome to shop, but you'll need to wait to actually pay for your goods and leave. The employee we spoke with was not sure when the power would be fully restored, but said that the store is still planning on staying open until 11 p.m. tonight.
Rumors of DCUSA Ellwood Thompson's Death (Possibly) Greatly Exaggerated
Well, this is certainly interesting: Ellwood Thompson's owner Richard Hood told TBD this afternoon that the grocer's plans to expand into Columbia Heights are not dead, as previously reported. "We are not in default. We continue to work with the landlord to make this happen," Hood told TBD, admitting to some confusion about why Councilmember Jim Graham said that the grocery wasn't coming to the DCUSA complex. Graham had told the Washington City Paper earlier today that not only had the grocer pulled out of its plans, but that Ellwood Thompson's would "pay for this very bad decision." To be honest, based on the way that this story has unfolded over the last three years, this is probably the least surprising thing that could have happened.
Ellwood Thompson's Columbia Heights Deal Off Again -- For Good
UPDATE: Now the owner of Ellwood Thompson's has refuted Graham, stating that the grocer is still working on plans to open at DCUSA.
Whole Foods Coming To Foggy Bottom
According to Bisnow, Whole Foods has signed a lease to open up a 38,000-square-foot location inside the huge new development at 2200 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, across the street from the George Washington University Hospital. Boston Properties, the owner of the building, had been hush-hush about which grocer would be taking the space, but hey, now you've got one more place to pig out on olives.
Target To Open Expanded Grocery In October
In an email to the Columbia Heights listserv, Jim Graham buried this little trinket: "Target is opening a full grocery store in July and extra staff is required." Don't bury the lede, Councilmember! Housing Complex confirms: an upcoming renovation at the Target inside DCUSA will allow the big box retailer to be a legitimate grocery option for D.C. residents. Work should begin shortly and the store expects to be finished in October (not July, as Graham said). With Ellwood Thompson's on its way into the same complex and the Giant right around the corner, getting a produce section and increasing dry goods inventory is kind of a no-brainer for Target. For those who shop frequently at the Columbia Heights Giant and now will have a competitor to thin that store's often unbearable lines: it's okay, let out those tears of joy.
Dorchester Market Forced to Close
The Dorchester Market, the once well-stocked bodega in the basement of the Dorchester House apartments at 2480 16th Street NW in Adams Morgan, will be no more come week's end. Residents of the building and the local area who frequent the shop may have noticed the recent precipitous drop in the restocking of goods: the gradually emptying freezer case, the large blank spots on the shelves, and finally, a couple of weeks ago, the disappearance of every magazine & newspaper from the counter newsstand. Those who guessed it couldn't bode well were right: last week, two-for-one specials started popping up, and then a simple, "Going out of business. Everything must go," sign on the doors indicated that the end was indeed nigh.
Organic Supermarket Signs Columbia Heights Deal
After a few false starts, it's finally official — we just received a press release from Ellwood Thompson's CEO Ryan Youngman, who said a deal was signed at about 2 p.m. today for a location in the DC USA shopping center.
Columbia Heights Organic Supermarket Deal Signed?
The Columbia Heights News forum is buzzing today with the rumor that Ellwood Thompson's, an organic supermarket based in Richmond, has finally signed a deal for a location in the DCUSA shopping center at 14th and Irving Streets NW in Columbia Heights. The store has been in talks for many months about the location.
