Cheney at GWU Hospital for Spinal Surgery

Breaking right now from the Washington Times: Former Vice President Dick Cheney is at The George Washington University Hospital this morning to undergo elective surgery on his spine. Cheney visited GWU Hospital something like 643 times over the course of the Bush administration, typically taking his massive motorcade along for the ride, the Secret Service keen on shutting down nearby streets. But now that he's no longer in office, we're curious to hear from Foggy Bottom denizens about whether any security presence is even noticeable around the hospital today. Can you tell Cheney is in the house?

The George Washington University student newspaper The Hatchet is reporting that a Medical Examiner's report shows that a sophomore who was discovered dead on campus in January died of acute alcohol intoxication. Laura Treanor, 19, was found dead in her bed by her roommate in the university's Ivory Tower residence hall. Treanor was a contributing editor at The Hatchet and a member of the Phi Sigma Sigma sorority. Witnesses said that Treanor had been at the Adams Mill Bar and Grill the night that she died, although initial accounts did not suggest that she'd been visibly intoxicated.

The GW Hatchet has the story on the leak, reported to the University Police Department at around 8:30 p.m. last night. One or both of two underground heating oil tanks adjacent to Lisner Hall spilled hundreds of gallons of fuel into the auditorium's basement. The entire law school complex was evacuated and approximately sixty students were escorted from several buildings, including the law library. According to the Hatchet's reporting, the incident has been classified by school officials as a heating oil fuel spill and has been contained.

Catania to Teach at George Washington University

D.C. Council member David Catania (I-At-Large) has announced that he has accepted a position as a Professorial Lecturer at the George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services (SPHHS).

... it's the second most expensive! Via Consumerist, we learn that Sarah Lawrence College has surpassed George Washington University as the most expensive college in the United States, when combining tuition and room and board. The difference is not just mere pennies, either: Sarah Lawrence now costs $53,166 total for one year, while George Washington runs $50,312. The even bigger drop is in the tuition-only category, which finds GWU knocked down to #6 on the list, while small schools like Bates and Middlebury climbed the ranks. Of course, attending GWU still costs rather a lot of money, no matter how you slice it, but at least it no longer holds the distinction of being the absolute most expensive. In related news: OMFG does it cost a lot of money to go to a private university these days!

Vice President Dick Cheney puts his troubled heart in the care of George Washington University Medical Center (check out The Colonialist's photos of Cheney waving to the crowd as he left yesterday afternoon), but the Liaison Committee on Medical Education has since put the medical school for which the hospital serves as a training ground on probation. The Post characterizes the probationary status of the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences as no laughing matter: it is the only medical school currently on probation, and only the fifth put on probation since 1994. The problems cited by the committee include areas ranging from curriculum, to administration, to facilities management. The school remains fully accredited while it works to improve to the point where its probationary status is removed.

For those of you who live or work near The George Washington University Medical Center, heads up that Vice President Dick Cheney is heading back there today to see his regular heart doctor. The Associated Press is reporting that Cheney experienced an irregular heart beat this morning, and has since canceled a campaign event on behalf of John McCain and "scheduled a hospital visit to 'restore his normal rhythm.'" Cheney is well known to Foggy Bottom residents for clogging traffic around Washington Circle with his enormous motorcade whenever he goes in to GWU for his many heart-related procedures. The Vice President has had four heart attacks. Folks around GWU should expect the Vice Presidential motorcade sometime this afternoon.

While much of America is focused on the NCAA Men's Tournament, we are forced to turn elsewhere upon the elimination of our area's three teams. And come on, you know you aren't going to win that office pool your friend pressured you to join. Fortunately, there are plenty of alternative sports viewing options this week. Feel free to leave your own in the comments.

Another wild week awaits area hoops fans. The madcap, non-stop college hoops action of Thursday and Friday represents the pinnacle of sports viewing for many fans. Sneaking out of work, bracket in hand, for an extra hour of lunch is an annual ritual for many a weary office drone. At this point next week, our brackets will be hopelessly crumbled, highlighted and marked with cryptic marginalia. Right now, however, hope springs eternal. Don't forget to join the DCist Reader-Staff Pool to take part in all the madness. Our suggestions for this week's sports viewing are below. As always, feel free to add your own in the comments.

One could argue that the GW Colonials men's basketball team put off their rebuilding year for awhile, and now it's caught up to them. Karl Hobbs' team reached #6 in the AP poll and the second round of the NCAA tourney in the 2005-2006 on the backs of Danilo Pinnock, Pops Mensah-Bonsu, Mike Hall, and Omar Williams. When those four left after the season to graduation and the pros, the team was expected to finish in the middle of the Atlantic 10. However, they overperformed (a Hobbs favorite) and won the conference tourney. Their return to the big dance was the team's third appearance in a row.
