Harris Teeter, New Craft Brewery Coming to The Yards

A Harris Teeter to Brookland?

A Harris Teeter to Brookland?

Sure, it might have been rodent-infested, but the old Safeway on Rhode Island Avenue NE was still the grocery of choice for many Brookland residents before it closed in March 2010. And even though a Yes! Organic Market on 12th Street NE is a fine option for some, the residential neighborhood could certainly support a supermarket. How about Harris Teeter? more ›

Much-Anticipated NoMa Harris Teeter Opens Tonight

We just got word from the NoMa Business Improvement District that the long-awaited Harris Teeter located at 1201 First Street NE will be officially opening for business tonight. Between 5:30 and 8 p.m., the store will host a ribbon cutting event and a soft opening with a bunch of free samples and wine; at 8, the store will open for your shopping pleasure. The store will open at 8 a.m. tomorrow morning and will begin regular operating hours (7 a.m.-midnight daily) on Thursday. The Harris Teeter -- which at 50,000-square-feet, is the chain's largest store in the District -- serves as the anchor for the huge mixed-use Constitution Square development. Based on this editor's Twitter feed, which has been laced with "if only the Harris Teeter was open" from hungry Northeast residents for some time, there should be some very happy grocery shoppers in D.C. today. more ›

Alex Ovechkin Filming Near Adams Morgan Harris Teeter?

Alex Ovechkin Filming Near Adams Morgan Harris Teeter?

Walking to my neighborhood grocery store yesterday, it was hard to miss all of the film equipment and crew near the Harris Teeter on Kalorama Road. I made some inquiries and did some Internet searching, but no one knew what was filming. Well, leave it to Prince of Petworth to find out the scoop: seems like Capitals player Alex Ovechkin is filming in in the area. He speculates it could be for a Capital One commercial, as he's done commercials for them before. Any Ovechkin spottings in Adams Morgan? more ›

Constitution Square Harris Teeter Scheduled For December Opening

We Love DC reports that the planned Harris Teeter supermarket inside Constitution Square -- a 2.5 million-square-foot mixed-use development near Union Station which broke ground in 2008 -- is scheduled to open on December 7. The 50,000-square foot Teeter will surely be a boon for those who live in the area around Near Northeast and along H Street NE. That area of town, once really suffering from a lack of decent grocery options, will have not only the new Harris Teeter, but also a new Aldi, which is planning on opening up a store at 901 17th Street NE sometime in 2011. more ›

Harris Teeter Looking at The Yards

Harris Teeter Looking at The Yards

We missed this one from the Washington Business Journal earlier this week: Harris Teeter is looking at a fourth location in the District, this time at the mixed-use Capitol Riverfront development The Yards, nearby Nationals Park. The lease has yet to be signed and the BizJo estimates it would take at least three years before the store could open thanks to the current financing market, but word of a grocery store coming to the area understandably elicits breathless comments from neighborhood officials. '“We're thrilled there's going to be a Harris Teeter in the neighborhood,” said Michael Stevens, director of the Capitol Riverfront Business Improvement District ... “They all bought into the vision of the neighborhood and a grocery store is part of that vision,” he said.' more ›

Harris Teeter Opens in Adams Morgan

We can hardly believe it ourselves, but the Harris Teeter in Adams Morgan celebrated its grand opening this morning. The ribbon cutting ceremony for the store, only about five years in the making, took place at a little after 10:30 a.m., with Mayor Adrian Fenty, Ward 1 Council member Jim Graham, and countless Harris Teeter officials on hand to deliver run of the mill remarks and welcome to the store to the neighborhood.

Adams Morgan Harris Teeter is Hiring

In yet another sign that the ridiculously long-awaited Harris Teeter grocery store in Adams Morgan is actually going to open, Ward 1 Council member Jim Graham has posted a notice on his web site that the store will hold a Job Fair on January 9 at the Columbia Heights Community Center on Girard St. NW. Both full-time and part-time jobs at the Harris Teeter are available, and applicants are asked to bring copies of their resumes and be prepared to interview that day. (hat tip: City Desk) more ›

New Traffic Pattern for Adams Morgan Harris Teeter

New Traffic Pattern for Adams Morgan Harris Teeter

Adams Morgan residents on the streets surrounding the new Harris Teeter received official notice at the end of last week that the District Department of Transportation is changing the flow of traffic to accommodate the anticipated increase in cars on the surrounding residential streets. As it stands right now, all three streets that bound the block containing the store are two-way thoroughfares. As of January 21, they'll all become one-way. As detailed in the letter: more ›

Grocery Store Shuffle in Northeast

Via bloomingdale (for now), it looks like Harris Teeter has committed to open a location in a new development project called Constitution Square at 1st and M Streets NE, right next to the New York Ave. Metro station. The news was first posted on the ANC 6C05 blog maintained by commissioner Alan Kimber. Kimber reported that Harris Teeter had originally been interested in an approx. 40,000 sq. ft. space at 3rd & H Streets NE... more ›

Photo of the Day: August 7, 2007

Flickr user erin*carly took this high perspective image of the interior of Harris Teeter, and a commenter aptly notes that that it's reminiscent of Andreas Gursky. If you're going emulate great photographers, he's not a bad one to choose, especially as far as your wallet's concerned. Gursky's wide-angle photographs, which turn repetitive items into a single mass of disorienting landscape, fetch serious cash. His 99 Cent II Diptychon is the highest selling photograph of all time at just over $3.3 million. EXIF.

Development Coming Down the Pike

Development Coming Down the Pike

Momentum is building for the push to develop and improve the Columbia Pike corridor, stubborn Giant notwithstanding. A recent article in the Washington Business Journal notes that a significant piece of the development effort could begin to take shape as early as May of this year. An unidentified developer is prepared to close on a property at the corner of Columbia Pike and South Walter Reed Drive, across the street from the Arlington Cinema and Drafthouse, and turn it into a condominium complex with over 40,000 square feet of retail, the bulk of which could be a new Harris Teeter grocery store. The presence of a new, upscale grocer will likely put pressure on the Columbia Pike Giant, whose insistence on maintaining its low-slung, big box design has impeded efforts to increase the walkability and density of the commercial strip. more ›

Peeking Around D.C.'s Blogs

This DCist is home sick today with a splitting headache, bad cough and congested sinuses. We would try to rest more, but we can't get much sleep because of low-flying helicopters over our apartment. Despite being bed-ridden, we're very thankful for laptop computers. So we thought we'd take care of some minor housekeeping and update some of our links to D.C.-area blogs we've been looking at as of late. -- The Upstate Life ... We... more ›

Capitol Hill residents tired of shopping at the mediocre Safeway off Kentucky Avenue SE or the "Un-Safeway" located in the anachronistically named Hechinger Plaza will soon have a new option for full-service grocery shopping on the Hill.
