After the third day of arguments over the Obama administration's 2010 health care law, it seemed more sure than ever that the Supreme Court will eliminate the individual mandate, and possibly the entire law.
After Third Day of Supreme Court Arguments, Health Care Reform 'May Be a Plane Wreck'
Health Care Reform Looks to be in Trouble as One-Man Supreme Court Left to Decide Fate of Obamacare
At the U.S. Supreme Court today, justices seemed to cast skepticism on President Obama's health care reform law. And as usual, it looks like it will be left to Anthony Kennedy to cast the deciding vote.
Both the Patient and the Paid Wait Outside U.S. Supreme Court for Health Care Reform Hearings
Some people wait in line for concert tickets. Others for food, or the newest generation of Apple products. But Kathie McClure and Monica Haymond are among the people that have lined up outside the Supreme Court, hoping to get into the hearings starting today on President Obama's health care reform law.
Virginia Congressman Wants Metro to Take Down Ad Telling President Obama to 'Go to Hell'
A poster at a Metrorail station isn't mincing words in advertising a documentary opposing the 2010 health care law. A member of Congress from Northern Virginia wants to see it taken down.
D.C. Joins Brief Supporting Healthcare Reform
D.C. Attorney General Irv Nathan announced today that the District was adding its name to a brief submitted by 10 states and the Virgin Islands backing the constitutionality of President Obama's healthcare reform law.
The Saturday Morning Post
Good morning, Washington. Freedom Plaza may be a little crowded this morning as antiwar and anti-Wall Street protesters make room for Mayor Vince Gray to kick off the D.C. Full Democracy Freedom Rally and March, planned to coincide with this weekend’s official dedication of the Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial.
The Saturday Morning Post
Good morning, Washington. Today is Slutwalk DC, the latest in a slew of protest marches triggered by a Toronto cop’s comment at a safety forum in January claiming that “women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized.”
GOP Amendment to Health Care Bill Tries to Force Same-Sex Marriage Vote in D.C.
The New York Times has started posting all the Senate Republican amendments to the health care reform bill, and, surprise, surprise, one of them concerns the District of Columbia's same-sex marriage law:
Bennett amendment: To protect the Democratic process and the right of the people of the District of Columbia to define marriage. (#3568)That'd be Sen. Bob Bennett of Utah, of course, and we understand that he has the support of Senators Wicker, Brownback, Hatch, Roberts, Inhofe and Cornyn as well. The amendment basically seeks to force D.C. to allow a ballot measure on same-sex marriage, despite numerous Board of Elections and court decisions to the contrary. It would also suspend issuance of marriage licenses to same-sex couples until such a vote is held.
Suspicious Package Investigation in Office of Sen. Baucus
UPDATE 4:35 p.m. We're now hearing the substance has been deemed harmless, and Baucus's office has reopened.
EHN's Town Hall Meeting Marked by Substance, Lack of Shouting
This is the picture of a Town Hall Meeting on health-care reform hosted by D.C.'s non-voting delegate to the House of Representatives, Eleanor Holmes Norton. No offensive signs. No angry shouting. No vaguely racist mob clamoring to get inside.
Rep. Louie 'Props' Gohmert Strikes Again
Normally we wouldn't care about something like this much, but this is the District's representative in Congress we're talking about here. Nope, not D.C. Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, but Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-D.C.Texas). During President Obama's Wednesday night speech on health care, Gohmert managed not to violate age-old rules of congressional decorum, though he did spend the better part of the speech waving a sign that said "What Bill" on one side and "What Plan" on the other.
Md. Man With 'Death to Obama' Sign Detained
Truly charming news out of Hagerstown: the AP via WTOP reports that the Secret Service detained a Maryland man who showed up to one of Sen. Ben Cardin's health care reform town hall meetings with a sign reading, "Death to Obama." And wait, it gets even charming-er! The sign also reportedly read, "Death to Michelle and her two stupid kids." Thanks for classing up the joint, unidentified 51-year-old Maryland man. We're sure everyone appreciates your erudite contributions to the health care reform debate.
Over 90 Arrests Outside White House
More protests, and lots more arrests. The AP says 91 people were arrested outside the White House today after some of them chained themselves to the fence in front of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. These folks weren't hardcore environmentalists, anti-capitalists or Darfur activists. No, a lot of these were people in wheelchairs who were trying to get President Obama's attention about alternatives to nursing home care for people with disabilities. So did the Secret Service actually lock up a bunch of people in wheelchairs? Thankfully, no: these protesters just got written arrest citations and were not taken into custody. The issue, it seems, is that they lacked the proper permit for a group that large. The protest began after 1 p.m., and we've also received reports that some of those who participated had to be treated for heat exposure.
