Talk to Me, Baby

DCist's guide to lectures and discussions in the D.C. area

The Post's David Nakamura reports that Mayor Adrian Fenty plans to endorse Barack Obama for the Democratic presidential nomination. An official announcement has yet to come, but the actions of Fenty adviser Jim Hudson, who organized a fundraiser for Obama, suggest the mayor looks set to get behind the Illinois senator's campaign. Hudson collected $600,000 and endorsements from some of the mayor's more loyal D.C. Council members: Yvette Alexander (D-Ward 7), Muriel Bowser (D-Ward 4)...

As fall settles in and another calendar page gets turned, thoughts turn from bbq's and vacations to holidays and the realization that '06 is coming to an end. With all that going on, with change in the air, we wonder what is it that made that makes the -ists ponder? Phillyist is concerned that the war on Trans fats could affect it's beloved cheese steak sandwiches, something for which we should all be concerned. They...

Print media has once again legitimized the blog world by grabbing one of our own. Garrett Graff, editor of Fishbowl DC, announced today that he'll be scaling back his duties at the Mediabistro blog to take over as editor-at-large of the Washingtonian. Graff will be taking over for the now retired Chuck Conconi, who was at Washingtonian for 13 years.

We logged on our work computer first thing this morning to an email from Mayor Williams' Director of Communications, Vincent Morris, with the subject line "fyi." What, we wondered, could he be emailing us about? Gunning for Grass's job? Thoughts on kickball? Sending us his pics from Unbuckled? Nope. The message was far more boring -- or, depending on your point of view, a statement about our esteemed mayor:

MAYOR WILL RIDE METRO TODAY, INSPECT SAFETY MEASURES: (Washington, DC) Mayor Anthony A. Williams will board the Metro at the Foggy Bottom Station to travel to Metro Center Station and hold a media availability outside the turnstile at the 12th and F Street, NW exit today, Friday, July 8. Mayor Williams will board at approximately 10 a.m., inspect the platform and speak with police officers as soon as he arrives at Metro Center.

Evans to Hold Hearings on Stadium Financing: The D.C. City Council's Committee on Finance and Revenue, chaired by Jack Evans (D-Ward 2), pictured at right, is taking in testimony on financing arrangements for a new Nationals baseball stadium today and Monday, May 16. Today's session will feature D.C. Mayor Anthony Williams, District CFO Natwar Gandhi, and eight groups that submitted private financing proposals for the stadium. Monday's session, slated to begin at noon, will include...

Good morning, Washington. The weather today is supposed to be frigidly chilly this morning with temperatures later rising into the 40s, according to Capital Weather. Drew McDermott's recent photo of the Virginia Square metrorail station entrance seems timely considering this morning's first item ...

At an event that seemed at times more like a candidate rally than a celebration for achieving a party position, former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean thanked supporters near Union Station today, pledging an unconventional tenure as head of the Democratic Party. Sen. Jim Jeffords of Vermont also made a brief appearance. The organization Dean founded, Democracy for America, has more photos and information. Click beyond the jump for more photos.

Howard Dean's political comeback is nearly complete: barring something on the level of an intern scandal, the 447 voting members of the Democratic National Committee are expected to overwhelmingly support him as successor to outgoing chief Terry McAuliffe at a meeting on Saturday.

Today will be sunny and breezy with highs in the 60s. The photo was taken yesterday at the first night of The Pixies' sold out two night engagement at Constitution Hall. Check back later today for DCist posts on yesterday's USDA stabbing and a full review of The Pixies with more photos.

Taking a nod from Martin Luther, a group has posted on the doors of the Democratic National Committee a document they call the "November 3rd Theses," declaring "the Democratic Party is today in the hands of people who have failed to articulate a moral-intellectual vision for America and the world, and you can't win the confidence of the electorate without a vision."

If you can't stomach the debate this evening, but are still in the mood for some TV viewing in a political vein, catch Robert Altman's "Tanner on Tanner." The first of the four-part series airs tonight at 9 p.m. on the Sundance Channel.

You know what? D.C. gets a bum rap sometimes, but there really is a ton of great stuff constantly going on in this town, and not just on the weekends. With that in mind, DCist brings you Out and About: Hump Day -- events dedicated to Wednesday, that most humpable day of the week. Check out what's happening this evening:
