When Councilmember Tommy Wells (D-Ward 6) stated in no uncertain terms yesterday that he wouldn't let the H Street NE streetcar travel up Third Street NE on its way to Union Station, it may have seemed like a good ol' community fight was in the brewing.
No, the Streetcar Will Not Be Heading Up Third Street

DDOT: Streetcar Now On Track For Mid-2013
In June, we learned that it would be late 2013 before we could board one of the Department of Transportation's shiny new toys along the long-awaited H Street/Benning Road streetcar line. Today, the agency announced that they're adjusting that timeline once again, this time in a positive direction.
Direct Streetcar Connection to Union Station Off The Table
While the region has been focused on the drama regarding the Metro station at Dulles International Airport and where it will be built, it's important to remember that the District is fighting a similar battle over how to connect its H Street streetcar line to Union Station.

Possible Friday Night Stabbing Inside H Street's Fruit Bat
UPDATE (3:30 p.m.): H Street bloggers @nicholeaileen and @HstreetDC confirm that Fruit Bat will remain open while management continue to work with MPD and ABRA in their respective investigations.
In what could be a damper on today's Ward 6 Family Fun Day festivities -- in lieu of the overcast skies -- news has just started circulating on a possible stabbing that took place late last night inside H Street's Fruit Bat bar. According to varying sources, the incident took place well inside the establishment, the bathroom, and may have spilled outside onto neighboring Granville Moore's steps. The Prince of Petworth notes that the victim was taken to a local hospital and is in stable condition, and no arrests have been made.
Red Palace Opens New Patio
Is there anything more satisfying than knocking off work a few minutes early and heading to your local pub of choice to soak in a couple rays while downing an ice cold beverage? (Answer: no.) Now you can add the Red Palace to your outdoor drinking itinerary: the H Street bar/concert venue/burlesque joint opened an outdoor space yesterday.
First Look: Toki Underground
They say good things come to those who wait. In the case of Toki Underground, that wait could be two or three hours. Between the hype, funky interior and promise of ramen that doesn't come in a styrofoam cup, the tiny H Street noodle bar has been swamped with opening week crowds. And while I don't believe any meal in D.C. is worth a three-hour wait, it's obviously that there's something special about Toki Underground.
Committee of 100: Love The Streetcars, Hate The Wires
When it comes to the District's streetcars, the Committee of 100 on the Federal City is diametrically opposed to overhead wires. It's just become kind of common knowledge among those who follow transit news in the region, kind of like how every Redskins fan knows that Dan Snyder will recklessly spend a lot of money on old free agents or everyone in town knows to stock up on bread before snow hits the area. But, in fairness to the C100, they don't actually hate the idea of installing streetcars -- far from it. At least that's the takeaway from a 91-page report released by the Commission earlier this week.
First Look: Smith Commons
Anyone who has faced hour-plus waits at Granville Moore's or Sticky Rice knows that H Street NE tends to be long on bars and short on sit-down dining options. But a wave of recent openings that included Ethiopic, Liberty Tree, and new addition Smith Commons, which opened its doors to media for a preview, could help move the neighborhood beyond just a nightlife destination.
Argonaut 2.0: Revenge of the Fallen - Reopens Tonight
With a name as gruff-sounding as the "Argonaut," there's no surprise that the Atlas District bar and eatery can tough it out through a devastating fire to reopen its doors tonight at 5 p.m. After all, the bar is named after the Argo. A ship. That sails on an ocean. With water everywhere ...

Cheaper property taxes was put forth as the impetus for the move.
The Jolly H Street Giant
H Street NE will officially get its Giant. The grocery chain and developer Steuart have finally agreed to a deal to feature a 41,200-square-foot Giant as the anchor for the gigantic 286,500-square-foot 360˚ H Street mixed-use development at 3rd and H Streets NE. The deal between Giant and Steuart had been pending since April. (For what it's worth, Michael Neibauer notes that Giant was Steuart's fourth choice for the space, after efforts to lure Harris Teeter, Yes! Organic Market and Trader Joe's didn't pan out.) The development will also feature other street-level retail and 215 housing units; construction is expected to begin in the spring and the Giant is slated to open in 2013.
Yes, H Street Businesses Are, In Fact, Open For Business
If you hadn't noticed, there is quite a bit of construction on H Street Northeast happening these days, as streetcar work and new development are radically redefining the streetscape along one of D.C.'s most up and coming commercial and residential corridors. But the mess is having a negative effect on business owners, most of whom now have storefronts obstructed by concrete barriers and little to no street parking for their customers.
Streetcar Funds in Jeopardy
As Greater Greater Washington reported earlier this morning, an 11th-hour change to D.C. Council Chairman Vincent Gray's budget proposal axes the majority of funding for the planned H Street/Benning Rd. streetcar line.

'19th Hole' Upgrade at H Street Country Club
It's only natural to want to top off a grueling afternoon or evening of sporting competition – in this case, mini-golf – with a couple of cold ones. Luckily for cocktail fans, at H Street Country Club, that post-game refreshment isn't limited to a selection of beers shoved in a cooler on the back of the golf cart. Thanks to the bar's newly expanded drinks menu, and the magic touch of mixologist turned consultant Gina Chersevani, revelers and competitors alike can sip on a Pebble Beach, a Mr. Hendrick's and a few other hand-crafted cocktails that include fresh and unique ingredients.

The Greater U Street Parade and Festival kicked off at 11 this morning: the parade route winds from 10th to 13th Streets, 13th Street from U to V Streets, and then on V Street from 13th to 14th Street -- the latter of which will be closed to traffic until 6 p.m., after its official renaming to "Langston Hughes Way" at noon by Ward 1 Councilman Jim Graham. H Street NE, meanwhile, will be closed to traffic between 10th and 14th Streets NE for the 2009 H Street Festival until 9 p.m.

Trinidad Firehouse Profiled in NY Times
Read this fascinating story from The New York Times on the D.C. Fire Department's Engine Company 10, by all accounts the busiest firehouse in the country. These Trinidad firefighters at the "House of Pain" spend most of their time not fighting fires, but rather serving as emergency medical responders.
About 80 percent of the calls handled by Engine Company 10 are medical emergencies because the firehouse serves one of the city’s poorest areas, where few residents have health insurance, doctors’ checkups are rare, and medical problems are left to fester until someone dials 911.The story also makes the point that due to a trending decrease in the number of fires nationwide, many fire departments rely on these medical calls to keep their firefighters employed. Still, it's hard not to see the underlying truths of the current health-care reform debate: our poorer residents don't get good, regular medical care, and the burden of that broken system ends up in the laps of our emergency responders and emergency rooms.
Streetcar Rail Work to Close Two Intersections on H Street NE
The District Department of Transportation is moving ahead with the installation of streetcar slabs and tracks along H Street NE, despite the fact that the streetcars themselves still have several planning hurdles to overcome before they'll be cleared to start running. But the laying of tracks will cause two intersections on H Street to be temporarily closed this week.
Chinatown Archway Work to Close Part of H Street Overnight
You've probably noticed the ongoing construction surrounding the Chinatown Archway at H and 7 Streets NW. The Archway itself has been covered up for several weeks, and the renovation work is expected to wrap up before the end of August. In order to complete the construction, DDOT plans to close H Street entirely between 6th and 7th Streets NW overnight tonight. The 600 block of H Street will be closed from midnight until to approximately 5 a.m. on Tuesday morning while crews move large equipment needed for the renovations into place. Drivers are instructed to follow posted signs, and use F Street or I Street to detour around the area.
