Pat Collins is great. But did you know he grew up along H Street NE? Neither did we.

Czech Uprising Succeeds in Deposing Oregon-Made Streetcar
The Washington Business Journal's Michael Neibauer reported yesterday that the District has cancelled a contract to buy two new streetcars from an Oregon-based manufacturer for $8.7 million.
Gray and Wells Award H Street Retail Grants
At a presentation this morning, Mayor Vince Gray and Councilmember Tommy Wells (D-Ward 6) awarded grants to four H Street NE businesses they hope will expand daytime retail along the bustling nightlife strip.
Where Are Those Streetcars Going?
Plenty of folks still want to know one simple thing -- where are the H Street NE streetcars going to end up?
H Street NE Debates Cap on Liquor Licenses
Bars, restaurants, clubs, and taverns tend to be pioneers when it comes to improving a neighborhood -- throughout the District, it's often bar-owners that have aggressively moved into areas ahead of the broader rush. But when are there too many bars for a neighborhood's own good? That's what residents along the blossoming H Street NE will soon be debating.
H Street Streetcar Now Delayed Until Late 2013
Now that we've passed the halfway point of 2011 and the long-in-progress tracks between 3rd and 14th Streets along H Street NE are in a state of near-readiness, people have begun to get excited about riding a D.C.-operated streetcar next year. Uh, might want to rein in those expectations.
Firefighters Battle Blaze Near 6th and H Streets NE
D.C. Fire and EMS responded to a house fire on the 800 block of 6th Street NE around 11:30 this morning. Unfortunately, there have been several injuries reported as a result of the fire.
D.C. Officially Seeking Streetcar Operators
Michael Neibauer has some exciting news for those anxiously awaiting the operation of streetcars along H Street NE: the city has taken the first step towards procuring a private operator for the vehicles.
HR-57 Is Silent on New H Street NE Location
It was with a sad heart that 14th Street area residents, like me, learned that HR-57 was closing its location at 14th and Corcoran Streets NW after nearly 20 years. However, I was glad to learn that the jazz club was relocating to H Street NE because of cheaper rent. The new HR-57 was supposed to open in January. However, it's February and there has been no movement at their supposed new location at 816 H Street NE and owner Tony Puesan isn't saying why.
Sticky Rice Reopens, Will Not Serve Alcohol Until ABRA Hearing
Last Thursday, we reported that popular H Street NE restaurant Sticky Rice had been temporarily closed by the Metropolitan Police Department after a "non-fatal stabbing incident" occurred on their property on December 29. We've now received word that the restaurant has reopened -- but will not be serving alcohol until an upcoming hearing with the Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration.
H Street NE Shuttle Service To Cease After December 31
Anyone who frequents the H Street NE corridor will tell you that the popular H Street Shuttle has made life much easier since its arrival in 2009. The shuttle serves as a compliment to the X2 Metrobus, connects multiple wards and, perhaps most importantly, is a boon for businesses around a corridor which has been hampered by construction for the better part of the last couple of years. But the shuttle will soon be a luxury of the past: service will cease after December 31.
Historical Washington: Look How Far We've Come
Some fascinating photographs came across my computer screen the other night -- images taken from the recent history of D.C., but ones that showed how far the city has come, or, in some cases, hasn't. The images are the work of Michael Horsley, who had a rare eye for the future when he set off through the streets of the District of Columbia in the mid to late 1980s with his camera, hoping to capture a scene which is, despite being only a little over twenty years old, feels totally foreign today.
Restaurant Week For Less on H Street
I'm an unabashed fan of Restaurant Week, though I normally spend my dollars on several $20 lunches instead of $35 dinners. But with tax, tip, and a glass of wine, that $35 prix fixe meal can quickly become a $60-plus affair. But not on H Street NE.
Seriously, the Gumball Machine?
Looting a beloved restaurant is bad enough; looting one that's just been gutted by a fire is even worse. But that's exactly what happened to the Argonaut over the Independence Day weekend. City Paper's Rend Smith
First Look: Star and Shamrock
Star and Shamrock Tavern and Deli is the latest eatery to sprout up on H Street NE. Doors opened last weekend for a soft opening period, and the restaurant's full menu rolls out tonight. Think deli with an occasional sprinkle of Irish/Jewish fusion sprinkled in.
Maybe We Should Rename It The Red Tape District
Obviously, we're fond of recently-passed indie icon Alex Chilton around these parts. Fitting then, that one of Chilton's most well-known stanzas -- "hangin' out / down the street / the same old thing / we did last week" -- so accurately describes some of the delays in H Street NE's evolution into the city's next corridor du jour.
H Street NE Businesses Get Property Tax Deferment
Businesses along the commercial corridor on H Street NE don't have to pay their most recent real estate property taxes until September 15, 2010, thanks to a bill passed by the D.C. Council on Tuesday. Ward 6 Council member Tommy Wells (D) introduced the measure to help small businesses in his ward that are struggling to stay afloat during the ongoing H Street Streetscape construction. The bill was passed unanimously.
H Street NE Shuttle to Cease Operation on Sunday
The popular free shuttle that serves the up and coming H Street NE corridor will be forced to cease operation on Sunday, Dec. 6, thanks to its funding from the city having dried up.
Daytime Shooting on H Street NE
A man was shot multiple times earlier today while attempting to board a Metrobus near 14th and H Streets NE. D.C. Police are currently investigating the shooting, which took place just before noon.
DDOT Schedules Public Meetings on Streetcars
The District Department of Transportation is bringing its show on the road in the coming month in an effort to do public outreach in all eight wards on the biggest projects in its pipeline, including those streetcars you've been hearing so much about. You may have seen different versions of this list of upcoming public meetings, but below is the revised, and most up-to-date, calendar now available.
Preview: Studio H Gallery and Workshop
On an up-and-coming section of H Street NE, tucked behind jersey barriers that surround the trolley line construction, is a nondescript building with a fitness center on the ground floor. On the second floor is the new home of Studio H Gallery and Workshop.
H Street NE Closed Between 5th and 7th Due to Gas Leak
DDOT reports that H Street NE has been closed between 5th and 7th Streets due to a gas main break. The gas leak is reportedly at 624 H Street NE, right outside the H Street Self Storage building. Traffic is being detoured around the area.
New Shuttle Service Makes H Street NE More Accessible
As anyone who has ever tried to get to H Street NE without a car knows, the area isn’t terribly accessible. Visitors to the area are often faced with a long walk from Union Station, trying to figure out the X2 bus schedule, or the often difficult task of finding a cab back at the end of the night. But all of that is has now changed.
Gamers Line Up for Grand Theft Auto IV
The smell of Red Bull wafted over H Street NE last night as gamers lined up for the midnight release of Grand Theft Auto IV, one of the most anticipated video games in history. By 11:45 p.m., about 50 people were in line at the GameStop at 817 H Street NE, for the release of the newest in the popular and controversial video game franchise, which is expected to gross $400 million in its first week. A total of about 80 people came through the doors by about 1 a.m. The Hechinger Mall store also had a midnight release, as did GameStops all over Maryland and Virginia and the rest of the country.
Single Alcohol Sales Double Standard in Logan Circle
Via City Desk, the Dupont Current (not available online) has a short piece about how the Logan Circle advisory neighborhood commission has given the go-ahead for the P Street Whole Foods to continue selling single-sale beers in the grocery store. The decision reportedly comes after eight months of such sales at the Whole Foods “without major conflict,” but the Current notes that just around the corner on 14th Street, the reputable Barrel House Liquors is...

New Bus Shelters Rolling Out
We told you long ago, in 2005 that is, that the District planned to roll out 788 new bus shelters as part of a $150 million deal with Clear Channel Outdoor. The shelters are finally starting to slowly creep across the city. On 8th Street between Capitol Hill proper and H Street NE, at least four shelters have been ripped out and are in the process of being replaced with the fancy new digs....
Closing Bell Rings for Common Share
Sad but true: the Post has some great coverage of the closing night at Common Share on Friday. The bar, located on 18th Street NW south of the Adams Morgan strip and just north of Florida Avenue, was one of the cheaper places in the city, with beers going for $2. While there are rumors that the bar may reopen elsewhere, possibly the H Street NE strip, we'll sure miss the inexpensive brew and laid...
