Brutality, Defined

In every post that has appeared on this site regarding the death of Jayna Murray inside the Lululemon Athletica shop in Bethesda and the murder trial of her attacker Brittany Norwood, I haven't been able to avoid using the word "brutal" to describe the crime. Such adjective usage was rather depressingly justified this morning. more ›

Caps Briefing: Internationally Known

Caps Briefing: Internationally Known

We all know the Capitals are known to rock a microphone. This year a few Caps prospects will get a little more exposure on the world circuit. Darren Machesney, the starting goalie for the Caps' top farm team in Hershey, will represent Canada in the Spengler Cup. Machesney has been in the Caps system since the 2005 draft, and has worked his way up from the South Carolina Stingrays to play for the Bears. The opportunity to represent his country, even if it's only in a Swiss tournament, is a testament to just how hard he has worked. more ›

Caps Briefing: Varlamov Arrives Early

Senators%20January%202008%20139%20Varlamov%20Telescreen%20resize.jpgSimeon Varlamov's long trip from Hershey, PA meant he didn't arrive in time to back up Brent Johnson when the puck dropped Friday against the Ottawa Senators. Instead, the Caps had to rely on team Web Producer and former Division III goalie Brett Leonhardt as their backup goalie for ten minutes of nail-biting NHL action. The Senators took every possible opportunity to try to hurt Johnson and get to Leonhardt, the only Division III goalie in the NHL this year. But once Varlamov got his pads on and joined the bench, the Sens stopped crashing the crease, as though Johnson had taken on the powers of Obi Wan Kenobi. Last night in Montreal, Varlamov showed exactly why. more ›

Nats Roundup: Injury Bug Strikes Again

Nats Roundup: Injury Bug Strikes Again

Yesterday, Nationals manager Manny Acta called a team meeting to remind his players that they are not "independent league players." The point was that, despite being younger and not as talented as some other clubs, they are expected to be able to complete routine plays like hitting the cutoff man and fielding the baseball. It is clear that Manny will live with a team that is last in the National League in every offensive category, the worst team in the National League, and quickly becoming the worst team in baseball, but he will not tolerate basic baseball errors. To put it another way, the manager of the Nationals expects the same level of play from his team as my junior varsity coach expected from my team. more ›

Morning Roundup: Just Say No to Rubbernecking Edition

And another good morning to you, D.C. Looks like it's going to be a fine, bright, sunny day in the city, with temperatures in the lower to mid 50s. But don't let our cheery outlook force you into being in a good mood too, especially if you were one of the unfortunate souls stuck in the 24-mile backup on the Outer Loop of the Beltway last night. Seriously, haven't we all already learned that slowing... more ›

The Curse of Les Boulez Strikes

DCist took in the Wizards impressive victory over the league leading Phoenix Suns on Saturday night at the MCI Center and left the arena feeling good about the immediate future of our new basketball powerhouse. That, however, came to an abrupt end on Sunday morning when we read the news that possible All Star Larry Hughes would miss four to six weeks with a fractured thumb on his shooting hand. The immediate returns from the Wiz were less than impressive after their 28 point loss yesterday in San Antonio. Hopefully the Wiz can bounce back tonight in Dallas against the Mavericks. more ›
