If you went to Georgetown or have been to any of its sporting events, you've likely seen Jack, the adorable bulldog that has served as the university's official mascot since 1962. Well, Jack might be out of commission for the months to come—he's injured.
Doggone It! Georgetown University Mascot Injured, Might Need Surgery
Strasburg Throws From Mound For First Time In Months
It's been a blasé season for the Washington Nationals. Most people expected this. But when the highlights of the season so far have been dollar-ticket night, the debut of the JFK racing president costume and somehow managing to float around .500 despite hitting an anemic .228 as a team, well, fans of the team could really use something positive to look forward to. Like, say, the return of Stephen Strasburg!

Choo Choo, We Hardly Knew Ye
Redskins running back Clinton Portis has reportedly been placed on injured reserve by the team, ending his season -- and, more likely than not, his career with the Redskins. Portis has logged 6,824 yards and 46 rushing touchdowns on the ground for Washington in his seven years with the team -- though he only played anything close to a full season in four of those years, and has only appeared in 13 of the team's last 26 games. We don't want to prematurely write his Redskins obituary -- but if Portis is indeed finished as a Redskin, the team will be losing so much more than a serviceable tailback. We're losing all of Portis' beloved characters!
If Only We Knew How To Quit You, Gilbert Arenas
Preseason NBA basketball is some pretty boring stuff -- which means the the spotlight is all on Gilbert Arenas with his latest head-scratcher. See, the Wizards had their first preseason home game last night (the phenomenal John Wall had 19 and an awesome coast-to-coast layup, by the way) and before the game, Arenas told head coach Flip Saunders that he had a sore knee. Arenas had been complaining about a achy ankle recently, so Saunders scratched Arenas from the lineup and started Nick Young in his place. Young led the team in scoring with 24 points and the team won by 15.
Which apparently Arenas took as the cue he needed to admit that he wasn't actually hurt.
Phst, Who Needs A Whole Pinky, Anyway?
Virginia Tech offensive lineman Greg Nosal got the game ball after the Hokies defeated Central Michigan by 24 on Saturday. It wasn't because he led the team in pancake blocks, or in recognition of him making the game's key play. No, it was because Nosal played nearly two-thirds of the game after having a half-inch of his left pinky cut off.
Strasburg Might Need Tommy John Surgery, Could Miss Most of 2011
The Nationals delivered some crushing news this morning via a conference call: phenom pitcher Stephen Strasburg will "probably" need Tommy John surgery on his injured pitching arm, which could put him on the shelf for up to a year, and perhaps as long as 18 months. An MRI which doctors performed on the arm yesterday discovered a "significant" tear of Strasburg's right ulnar collateral ligament.

Caps Briefing: Bustin' Loose!
On a night when the Caps nearly came from behind to beat the Columbus Blue Jackets, the team did something else to help cement their identity as a D.C. institution. With 8:35 remaining in the third period, and both teams readying for a faceoff in the Capitals' defensive end, the team's sound crew played Chuck Brown's "Bustin' Loose" over the arena speaker system.
USMNT's Charlie Davies Injured in Parkway Collision
Wire reports now confirm that a fatal early-morning car accident on the GW Parkway did indeed involve U.S. Men's National soccer team forward Charlie Davies. Davies was not behind the wheel at the time of the accident. WTOP reported that the collision, which occurred at about 3:15 a.m., claimed at least one fatality and seriously injured two others. One look at the car involved in the wreck, and it's understandable that Davies' injuries -- which have required hours of surgery -- are being described as "possibly career-threatening." (Although as of 5 p.m., the U.S. Soccer Federation is backing off of that assessment, calling the effect of Davies' injuries on his future "unclear.") Steve Goff's SoccerInsider twitter account first reported the news, and confirmed that Davies, who is still under the knife, did not suffer "life threatening" injuries.

Filling in for the host, Susan Page of USA Today reported that Rehm was running across the street on Thursday when her heel got caught in the leg of her pants. As a result, Rehm tripped, and she managed to break her pelvis during the fall. Talk about bad luck. She'll now be out for at least a few weeks while she recuperates. We wish her a speedy recovery.

Cause of Death at Meridian Hill Park Uncertain
Metropolitan Police Department officials are investigating the death of Benjamin Koomen, a genetic diagnostic laboratory supervisor who was found near Meridian Hill Park on Sunday morning. Koomen, 34, died at 3:30 p.m. on August 9 as a result of injuries he sustained, which DCist first glossed after a reader discovered blood at the park. MPD Assistant Chief Diane Groomes said that the cause of death has not been determined and that police are still awaiting results of both the autopsy and an ongoing investigation by the homicide unit. Police in the Public Information office, however, said investigators have ruled out foul play. Koomen's friends and coworkers have reacted to this unexpected tragedy with an outpouring of sadness and grief. One friend describes him as an exceptionally bright person who should not have died as he did, while others have flooded his Facebook page with notes of remembrance. No doubt, the lingering questions about how his death came to pass have only compounded that grief.
Jordan Zimmermann To Miss 18 Months With Elbow Injury
Ay carumba -- to think, we were all set for a tranquil evening on the sports front, with no local games on the schedule. We're definitely sure, though, that this was not the kind of news that the Nationals were hoping for on their day off and after closing out two consecutive home sweeps: rookie pitcher Jordan Zimmermann has blown out his throwing elbow and will require a ligament-replacement procedure. That's right, Tommy John surgery.
