Click Click: Sunset Parade at Iwo Jima

Frequent DCist photo contributor Angela Kleis was walking her dog a few weeks ago to their usual park, when suddenly she found herself "surrounded by Marines":

Turns out, they do this every Tuesday from Memorial Day through August. Since I just moved here last August, I missed it before. The band plays and they go through the silent drill, which is damn cool. I could never catch the baton like that! They start practicing around 5:45 p.m.

Overheard in D.C.: Foreign Policy

Overheard in D.C.: Foreign Policy

Diplomacy is the cornerstone of foreign policy. The relationship between countries can be fragile, but diplomatic exchanges foster valuable insight into each other's cultures, bring to light areas of mutual cooperation to achieve common interests, and forge stronger economic and political ties. However, when two countries cannot reach an agreement on an area of conflict and the stronger country will sometimes jettison diplomacy and pull out their big stick. Photo of the Day: June 16, 2006

This picture, taken by maxedaperture, is both good in composition and the memories it evokes. My first summer in D.C. -- as an intern, no less -- included plenty of time walking around this Rosslyn-based memorial and the surrounding park. For an part of Arlington dominated by sterile-looking high-rises, this memorial is a breath of fresh air. Anyone care to hazard a guess as to where this was shot? In the meantime, check out the EXIF data here. more ›

Pentagon Memorial Design Misses an Opportunity

Pentagon Memorial Design Misses an Opportunity

The Washington Post reports today that the groundbreaking ceremony for the Pentagon Memorial, commemorating those that died on September 11th, has been scheduled for June 15. The design includes 184 benches, each one engraved with the name and birth year of someone who perished in the Pentagon or on Flight 77, cantilevered over small reflecting pools. Located at the building's southwest corner, the memorial will occupy 1.93 acres and cost approximately $17.5 million to build.... more ›

As Iraq Votes, D.C. Enjoys Snow, Breakfast

As Iraq Votes, D.C. Enjoys Snow, Breakfast

When D.C. woke up this morning, the sun was preparing to set on Baghdad. On such an historic day -- Iraq's first post-Hussein national elections -- millions turned out to vote, despite attacks that left more than 30 people dead. In Washington, a city that has been awaiting this day for quite some time, we woke up to fresh snow and John Kerry on NBC's "Meet the Press." The roads were fairly empty and everyone... more ›

It's October! Live It Up

Welcome to October! Crisp autumn breezes, the scent of spice in the air, and tons of activities abound during one of D.C.’s most pleasant months. How better to enjoy October than to tackle a few tried and true amusements that make D.C.-area living so pleasurable. DCist offers a few suggestions. Suggestion 1 – Quit the city. Sure D.C. is great, but one aspect that makes D.C. so liveable is the city’s close proximity to…well, the... more ›

Military News

Military News

When DCist was out for Sunday brunch at the Fort Meyer Officer's Club, we picked up a copy of the Pentagram, the base's newspaper. We often forget about all the news that happens on the area's military bases, partially because base-life is relatively closed off and isolated from the general public. (DCist had trouble finding our way onto the base, with the Wright Gate, adjacent to the Iwo Jima Memorial, closed; we had to enter way over by Washington Boulevard via the Hatfield Gate.) more ›
