If there was one thing that deserved special attention at Saturday's Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear, it was the signs. It seemed like every single attendee brought at least one with them: some of them silly, many of them incredibly funny and all of them containing sentiment that would certainly not be out of place in the comments of any given DCist post. While "I Thought This Was The Line For Georgetown Cupcakes" gets our choice for best effort of the day, there were several strong contenders. Here are a whole bunch of our favorites.
Rally Cap: Signs. Oh, The Signs.
Rally Cap: Restoring Sanity, Fear and Halloween Costumes
Just like the Restoring Sanity rally back in August, we could have spent tons of words on what the Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear said about about mainstream media, tomorrow's elections or America today. (Though Kid Rock's involvement kind of cramps our ability to come up with anything enlightening, to be totally honest.) We could prattle on about the long lines, Metro delays and most people's inability to see or hear anything when they got to the Mall. But there are plenty of people who get paid a lot more money than us to make such sweeping statements about such things (not to mention, there are plenty of people who would do it for free) -- so we'll just show you all the visuals from Saturday's rally and let you make your own conclusions.
DCist's Rally To Restore Sanity and/or Fear Tweetacular!
Well, it's finally here: the Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear. It appears, even at 8:30 a.m., that the crowds are already starting to pack in along 3rd Street and on the Metro. So will the crowd, estimated at 200,000 people, actually be that huge? Will there be a Bruce Springsteen performance, as many have rumored? And for the love of all things holy -- will there be enough portable toilets to go around? DCist will have a crack team of correspondents on the scene today -- including, but not limited to myself, Heather Goss, Eddie Kim, Brett Gellman, Alicia Mazzara, Martin Austermuhle, Ian Buckwalter, Kyle Gustafson, Missy Frederick, Elisabeth Grant, Kelly Rand, John Fleury and Valerie Paschall -- to record, via the magic of Twitter, the things that they are seeing, hearing, and feeling, as well as any other sensual experience which the Rally will provide.
Want to join in? Tweet along with us -- use the hashtag #feardcist and your tiny communiques will appear alongside ours in the real time ticker below. Don't forget to check out our basic primer if you haven't already -- and everyone have a sane and/or fearful day.
So, Yeah, About That Rally Thing Happening Tomorrow
Look, we know you're all probably suffering from a serious case of Rally fatigue. So are we, to be totally honest -- after all, this event alone has fed the pundit machine for the last two weeks almost on its own. But if we didn't provide you with this information, then we wouldn't really be doing our job, now would we? We swear this'll be quick, like ripping a Band-Aid off a particularly hairy patch of skin.
Those Itching For Rally Guest Details: Here's The Latest
Metromix reports that they've gotten their hands on a very preliminary schedule for Saturday's Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear -- and while we're working on confirming if any of the reported details are true, we thought you might appreciate knowing what is being floated out there. There are still a ton of performers and "special guests" listed as "to be announced," but what details are on the schedule sound promising if they pan out to be true: The Roots warming up the crowd between noon and 12:40, a poetry reading by actor Sam Waterston, a musical performance from Jeff Tweedy and something called the "Sanity and Fear Awards," which we can only imagine will be uproariously funny.
The Daily Show Begins D.C. Taping Today
Jon Stewart and the jokesters behind the Daily Show have arrived in town and will begin a week's worth of tapings of the popular late night program this afternoon at Sidney Harman Hall. If you were one of the lucky few to get tickets, you'll get the chance to see interviews with Council Of Economic Advisors Chairman Austan Goolsbee today and Senator Ted Kaufman (D-DE) on Tuesday. Oh, right and some Obama guy on Wednesday. (Nah, your DCist editor isn't bitter at all about having to listen to some guy from Delaware instead of one of the most important figures of the 21st century. Not at all.)
The Calm Before the Storm: Week before Rally
So DCers, lest you forget that next weekend will be a mess of Jon Stewart/Stephen Colbert rally goers, Halloween revelers, and general madness, we have a round-up of what people are talking about a week before:
Colbert/Stewart Rallies Will Have Enough Port-A-Potties, After All
On Wednesday, I highlighted a report by WTOP which stated that organizers for the Stephen Colbert/Jon Stewart "Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear" were having issues getting enough portable toilets for the October 30 event. Little did I know that there was already an intrepid D.C. reporter on the Stewart/Colbert port-a-john beat! I admittedly missed this report by Ryan Kearney, in which Kearney confirmed with a Comedy Central spokeswoman that the rally would have its "own Porta Potties" and that they were "all good." So I hereby apologize, dear readers, for any confusion I may have caused you concerning where you'd be able to relieve yourself on the Mall come the 30th. Though, if I can be blunt: I got the chance to use the phrase "potty problem," and the commentariat got to make a whole lot of poop jokes -- so, it kind of feels kind of like a win-win to me.
Stewart/Colbert Rally Has A Potty Problem
Remember back during the preparations for the Obama inauguration, when we were all really, really concerned about where we'd be able to relieve ourselves on the Mall? (Eventually, Inauguration organizers were able to wrangle up 5,000 portable toilets.) But the Jon Stewart/Stephen Colbert "Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear" on October 30 is experiencing a similar problem, albeit on a much smaller scale.
Colbert To Piggyback On Stewart Permit
It's not even clear whether or not Stephen Colbert's people had even applied for a permit to hold the "March to Keep Fear Alive" on National Park Service property, but that's a moot point now. Colbert showed up on The Daily Show last night to ask Jon Stewart whether he could mooch off his permit, which came through last week and affords Stewart space between 3rd Street and 7th Street on the Mall.
Stewart's "Rally To Restore Sanity" Reveals Location
Jon Stewart's Rally To Restore Sanity now has a place on the National Mall. In the Frequently Asked Questions page of the rally's website, the location for the event is revealed as "the far eastern end of the National Mall between 3rd Street and 7th Street, known as East Seaton Park and Henry Park." D.C. residents will be really familiar with the location -- it's where Screen on the Green happens every summer. (Though we imagine there will be a bit less HBO Dancing at the Stewart rally.)
Colbert/Stewart Rallies Are Planned, It's The Truthiness
When I got the chance to sit down with Eleanor Holmes Norton last weekend, I knew that I'd end the interview with a question about Stephen Colbert and the rumors that he'd host a rally on the Mall in response to Glenn Beck's Restoring Honor rally. Norton's a titan of the D.C. political scene and probably one of the most interesting people I've ever sat down and talked with -- the stories she has at her disposal: incredible -- but there's no denying that there's a significant slice of America that knows her as that lady that Colbert made fun of in his "Better Know A District" series. And Norton loves Colbert, even stating that Colbert had "done more for voting rights than anything we have ever done."

Out and About: Weekend Picks
FRIDAY: >> We'd be remiss if we didn't note that tonight will be the last time that Kathryn of Kathryn On will host one of her famous Blogger Happy Hours. It starts at 7 p.m. at Lucky Bar. Fans of the regular happy hour shouldn't fear, however, as Kathryn says she has "a couple of fledgling social chairs waiting in the wings." Washington, You're On Notice
Here at DCist, we're all big fans of the Colbert Report (and pretty much any and everything else the great Jon Stewart ever had a hand in). That's why we couldn't pass up the opportunity to put a few folks On Notice when we came across shipbrook.com's On Notice Board Generator. In the grand tradition of The Colbert Report, if anyone we've put On Notice comes by our offices* within the next 60 days,...
Sweet Homecoming
Now that it's Tuesday and we've all officially recovered from our homecoming hangovers, we thought we'd take a little time out to recap some of the weekend's most memorable moments from Howard Homecoming and Colonials Weekend at GW. Make sure to add your experiences in the comments so we can all bask in the wistful reverie of college days gone past. Except for the first half of sophomore year when we lived with that girl...
Ari Fleischer Hits 'The Daily Show'
Set your DVR's, D.C.! Former Bush press secretary Ari Fleischer appearers on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart tonight at 11 p.m., to plug his new book. We know it's a Thursday night, and you're eager to get a head start on the weekend, but Gawker is billing this as the "Battle of the Boychiks" and we think it's going to be one worth watching.
Wonkette vs. Gasparino
If you thought that the Tucker Carlson/Jon Stewart feud was the only political pundit vs. pseudo-journalist battle going on, think again. Our own irreverent Wonkette seems to be on the outs with Newsweek writer Chris Gasparino. NY Post columnist Elisa Lipsky Karasz tattles that the duo are in the midst of a grudge match that began with their joint appearance on the CNBC show "Topic A with Tina Brown". Following that heated "debate", full-time blogger...
The Talking Heads
With 8 days and counting until the election, the airwaves are getting mighty crowded. Candidates, pundits and celebrities are all vying for some air time this week in a last ditch effort to bring their political views to the TV watching public. They NYTimes reports that the week ahead is chock full of political programming: Viewers can see Sean Combs...with Greta Van Susteren on Fox News tonight. Later in the evening, Madeleine K. Albright, the...
Crossfire's Damned Studio Music
Unless you've been skipping out on Wonkette, the Post's Lisa de Moraes or anyone who comments on the performance of political pundits, you've heard plenty about the comments of Jon Stewart of "The Daily Show" during a special visit to Friday's "Crossfire."
Live Dose of ‘Daily’ Humor
We think everyone has caught on to our love for Jon Stewart’s irreverence here at DCist. We admit it, we have a crush. So, as we wipe the drool from our keyboards, we have an obligation to declare tomorrow a perfect day to play hookie from the office. Why? To catch the 1 p.m. Jon Stewart and Ben Karlin book signing at Politics and Prose, silly.
Georgetown, Ohio
DCist is on to you, Jon Stewart, et al. On last night's show "Daily Show" correspondent Samantha Bee was "reporting" live from Cleveland after the vice presidential debate with a busy street scene behind her. We all know that "Daily Show" correspondents do their thing in front of a blue screen in New York, but Bee's backdrop was not Cleveland, but Georgetown. If you spied the golden dome of the Riggs Bank at Wisconsin Avenue...
Jon Stewart vs. Bill O'Reilly (Round 1)
We're a little late on this on, but we thought it was better late than never. Media darling (or maybe just darling in general) Jon Stewart of the Emmy winning Daily Show was a recent guest on The O'Reilly Factor, with Bill O'Reilly. The Daily Show has built up quite a respectable reputation over the years and attracts more then its fair share of Congressmen, Senators, and know-it-all political pundits. O'Reilly was respectful enough (or...
Kerry on 'Late Show'
Popular culture and politics are, indeed, strange bedfellows. Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry appeared last night on CBS's Late Show with David Letterman and treated viewers by reading the Top Ten List. Kerry has also appeared on NBC's Tonight Show with Jay Leno and Comedy Central's Daily Show with Jon Stewart. According to AP reports, candidate Kerry wasn't all laughs last night: The Massachusetts senator spent much of his appearance discussing serious topics ranging from...
TiVo Alert! Stewart Vets Kerry
From DCist contributor Rebecca Walters: DCist knows that there are many Daily Show addicts out there who are already aware of tonight's guest, but those who only tune in for a Jon Stewart diversion for time to time might want to catch this evening's show. John Kerry is set to chat with Mr. Stewart this evening at 11 p.m. on Comedy Central (for all our non Eastern-time readers, please check your local listings for air...
