DCist's guide to lectures and discussions in the D.C. area Monday: >> The National Building Museum focuses on design tonight with New York architect Deborah Berke from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Berke will discuss her experiences as well as her "notion that architecture is not an end in itself, but a setting that is enhanced by its use." $20.
There are a number of really interesting lectures this week, including three focused on food (tomatoes, tortillas and even an Indian buffet!), as well as a good variety of visual and performing arts lectures, book talks, and more.
Monday: >> The 14th Street Busboys has an evening of Welsh poetry and song tonight starting at 6 p.m., including work from Welsh writers Catrin Dafydd, Owen Sheers, Fflur Dafydd, Tom Anderson and Eurig Salisbury as well as D.C. poets Ethelbert Miller, Kyle Dargan and Fred Joiner.
>> Tonight head over to Flashpoint and watch artists Kate McGraw and Ann Tarantino collaborate on planned and improvised drawings created directly on the walls of the gallery. Workbook will feature the artists' own signature styles as well as their response to one another's mark-making. McGraw and Tarantino will collaborate for ten days and document the process through video and in a twist to the typical "buy the painting on the wall," they'll instead make small 7x7" paper prints, each handmade, unique and available for $50. The video will be incorporated into the project and on view on March 28. Opening reception tonight from 6 to 9 p.m.
This week, we have discussions about the Roman Empire, Lincoln, Nazis and blogging, as well as a handful of lectures on contemporary art.
