The dog days are officially upon us, so we decided the most logical thing to do is sick a wolf on 'em. Le Loup rocketed out of nowhere onto the local music scene in late 2007, with a Hardly Art record deal and international tours before we could even learn the names of all seven people in their lineup. The first album was recorded before Sam Simkoff had cohorts, and while it was by far one of our favorite musical happenings of 2008, we wondered what they could do recording as a full band. Well, wonder no longer. In preparation for the release of their second album, Family (due out September 22), Le Loup has kindly shared the first single, "Beach Town," free of charge. The band's undergone some lineup changes, but that lush, layered sound we came to love last year is still intact. Give it a listen yourself, and let us know what you think.

Like some poorly constructed M. Night Shyamalan film, something must be in the air killing off our favorite D.C. bands. The latest casualty is Telograph (***), who we've reviewed several times in the past. The band, which will be playing their farewell show at the 9:30 Club this Friday, wrote the following on their MySpace blog:

As the clock rolls down on 2007, we've done as bloggers tend to do and taken a look back. The DCist music staff scratched our chins, tapped our temples, and compiled a list of our favorite local acts of the year. Whether it was because they released a new album, had some great shows, or just finally wore us down with press releases, these are the D.C. musicians that really made us proud to call the District home this year.

There’s something totally undeniable about the music of Bellman Barker. From the moment they hit the stage, toes start tapping. A verse or two in, heads start bobbing. By the time they hit the chorus, you’ll find yourself wanting to jump up and down like a kid who’s had too much sugary cereal for breakfast. Their recorded output has been compared to late-period Belle & Sebastian and rightfully so—these local lads clearly worship at the same altar of 60s pop. In a live setting, however, the songs take on a life of their own, with the bouncy verses and wide-open choruses adding up to something more power pop than twee. Rest assured, there’s still no shortage of vocal harmonies, a whole lot of handclaps and more than a few “Oohs” and “Aahs”. New music is often created through the collision of hitherto disparate styles. Immigrating to the U.S. from Ukraine in the 1990s, Eugene Hutz (pictured), the driving force behind Gogol Bordello, grew up on his native music but also caught the tail end of the American hardcore scene, most notably D.C. legends Bad Brains and Fugazi.
