Alexander: Kwame Brown Is "Contender For 'Bama of the Year"

Maybe it's because it's the Friday afternoon of an absurd week in District politics, but we couldn't help but find Leo Alexander's reaction to Kwame Brown's Adventures in Navigatorland downright hilarious. Speaking to The Afro, Alexander said, "When I first heard about this, I had a 'Huggy Low Down' moment. Chairman Kwame Brown will definitely be a contender for 'Bama of the Year!'" If this was Alexander's application to earn a place in The Onion's American Voices rotation, well, I'd say he's got a pretty good shot. After all, Alexander's got a knack for saying this kind of thing. more ›

Sunday Lost Icons - Found!

Sunday Lost Icons - Found!

Just a few weeks ago I found a photo I'd taken in 1992 of the RC Cola Woman, and wondered what ever happened to her? In some kind of crazy kismet, I found out Friday night. more ›

Attacks Toned Down in Ward 8 Mayoral Forum

Attacks Toned Down in Ward 8 Mayoral Forum

Maybe Mayor Adrian Fenty and Vince Gray both had good days, or maybe both recognized that last week's Ward 4 mayoral cage match got a little too heated and negative. Whatever the reasons, both Gray and Fenty largely steered clear of each other at last night's Ward 8 forum, held in an auditorium on the St. Elizabeth's campus. In fact, the whole event was basically structured to be what Ward 4 wasn't -- well-moderated, insightful and of actual use to the undecided voter. more ›

Gray Wins Ward 4 Poll Amidst Rowdy Candidate Forum

Mayor Adrian Fenty may have gotten the Post's endorsement last week, but he couldn't nail down a straw poll victory in his own home ward last night. more ›

Reading the City Paper? Well, We've Got News For You

Ah, the search for the perfect lede. It's tough -- the pressure for a journalist to craft a snappy opening that will make people want to keep reading can be immense, depending on what you're writing about. Maybe people aren't talking, maybe the material's a little dry, maybe you've just got writer's block -- all are common impediments to getting that awesome hook. more ›

Could Leo Alexander Help Swing the Mayor's Race?

Could Leo Alexander Help Swing the Mayor's Race?

Second-tier candidates have a long history swinging elections one way or another. Witness the accusations lobbed at Ralph Nader to this day over his taking vital votes from Al Gore in the 2000 presidential election. more ›

Candidates Refine Pitches at Mayoral Forum

Candidates Refine Pitches at Mayoral Forum

While there have been a few mayoral debates already, yesterday's forum at the Field School in Ward 3 seemed to officially kick off what has become a three-man race between Mayor Adrian Fenty, D.C. Council Chairman Vincent Gray and former TV reporter Leo Alexander. Held in a large school gym and crowded with local residents, the forum saw the three attempt to refine their campaign pitches while engaging in some spirited back-and-forth. (I live-tweeted the event; check here for the immediate play-by-play action.) more ›

A wide range of District political candidates gathered at One Judiciary Square last night to make their case to members of D.C. for Democracy why the organization should support their candidacies in the September Democratic primary. Everyone from the mayor to would-be shadow representatives showed up to make their case. Endorsements should be handed down in the coming weeks. more ›

First Mayoral Forum Announced, But Not Everyone is Invited

First Mayoral Forum Announced, But Not Everyone is Invited

Though the District's mayoral campaign is still relatively sleepy, the next few months promise a number of opportunities for the candidates to meet face-to-face against each other, as civic associations and other organizations line up to host forums and debates. On Wednesday we received word of what looks like the first such forum of the season, to be co-hosted by the Cleveland Park Citizens Association, Foxhall Community Citizens Association, and the Palisades Citizens Association on June 3. Mayor Adrian Fenty, D.C. Council Chair Vincent Gray and former TV reporter Leo Alexander have each been invited to present their visions for the District at the event. more ›

Still No Serious Challengers to Fenty

Putting aside this latest, ludicrous development, it's basically crickets out there when it comes to the District mayoral race. According to the most recent financial reports submitted to the Office of Campaign Finance, Mayor Adrian Fenty's got $3.3 million sitting in the bank (with a campaign total so far of $3.9 million). His two declared challengers, Leo Alexander and Sulaimon Brown, have just $2,628.84 combined -- Brown has $27.84 of that, Alexander the remainder. Even adding three zeros to the end of that wouldn't get them within half-a-million of Fenty's current bankroll. Of course, well-funded candidates have been known to be beat by scrappy underdogs, but so far no one underdog is attracting much citywide attention -- much less any excitement. If this isn't a big kick in the ass that someone serious needs to step up -- lest the actual election be a mere formality -- we don't know what is. more ›
