Police Search For Suspect in Daytime R Street NW Shooting

Justice Elena Kagan Digs D.C.

Justice Elena Kagan Digs D.C.

We get so used to reading stories about government-types sleeping on cots in their offices, believing that they need to carry handguns while they do walk around town and generally giving the "la, la, la, I can't hear you" treatment to the entire city, that it actually warms our heart a little bit to know that there's at least one member of the national leadership who doesn't just give D.C. the time of day -- but appears to actually like living here. more ›

Power Outage At P Street Whole Foods

Trying to pull together the materials for a last minute Thanksgiving meal this afternoon? We tried to lend a hand -- but it's going to be tough sledding if you need to buy anything from the Whole Foods at 1440 P Street NW this afternoon. The power went out at the grocery around 2:30 this afternoon, and has come back on...kind of. According to an employee at the store, all the registers are still down as of 2:45 -- so you are more than welcome to shop, but you'll need to wait to actually pay for your goods and leave. The employee we spoke with was not sure when the power would be fully restored, but said that the store is still planning on staying open until 11 p.m. tonight. more ›

Suspicious Package Cleared In Logan Circle

We got a few tips concerning a police situation at the intersection of 14th and Rhode Island Avenue NW this afternoon. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, the issue was a suspicious package, which -- you guessed it -- was deemed non-threatening after investigation. Based on the emails into our tipline, police were telling workers to stay in their offices around the area and were blocking vehicular and pedestrian access to the intersection during the investigation. Everything should be clear at this point, however. more ›

PETA Speaks Up On the Molly Dognapping

PETA Speaks Up On the Molly Dognapping

The saga of Molly, the stolen and ultimately returned Logan Circle area dog, has garnered the interest of aggressive animal rights group PETA. The group sent out a press release today urging pet owners never to leave their animals tied up alone outside. From the release:

Molly, the 7-year-old Vizsla who was dognapped after her guardians left her tied up unattended outside a Washington, D.C., Whole Foods store, is one lucky dog: She was returned to her family safe and sound nearly a month after she was taken. Many dogs who are left unattended are sold under the table, used as "bait" in fights involving pit bulls, or suffer other miserable fates. PETA urges guardians never to leave dogs or cats alone outside a store, restaurant, or anywhere else, even for "just a minute." That minute may haunt an animal guardian for the rest of his or her life. more ›

Molly the Dog is Home Safe

Molly the Dog is Home Safe

One of the longest comment threads in DCist's history can at last come to a happy conclusion. Molly, the 7 year-old Vizsla who was allegedly taken by a stranger while she was tied up outside the P Street Whole Foods, is back home with her family. Tyler Newby, Molly's owner, last night sent out an email to fellow dog owners in the Logan Circle neighborhood announcing his dog's safe return. Molly seems to be in good health, he said, although understandably tired. Details on the police-involved recovery of Molly from the woman who allegedly took her are scant, Newby said, though an officer did tell him that it was evident the woman had mental health issues. "... we want to offer our most heartfelt thanks to everyone who supported us and provided tips and leads. Without those leads, it's unlikely the police would have had enough information to justify spending time investigating," Newby wrote. more ›

Truck Fire, Gas Tank Explosion at 12th & P Streets NW

A truck caught fire earlier this morning at 12th and P Streets NW, eventually leading to a small explosion as the gas tank succumbed to the flames. The truck was a rambling pickup that, along with its bed full of scrap wood, has been a neighborhood fixture for years. The single bike cop on the scene kept onlookers from walking down P and waited for the fire department as the fire spread from beneath the hood to envelope the cab and front tires. Eventually, fire personnel and additional police arrived; as they were setting up the hose, the truck's gas tank exploded (previous exciting noises: the horn going off; the horn's pathetic death squeak; and a long, loud hissing). more ›

Check out before and after photos above of the new dog park at Shaw Recreation Field, on 11th Street NW just above Rhode Island Ave. The new park only broke ground a little over three weeks ago -- that's some fast doggy run construction. The fenced in dog area replaced a concrete fútbol rápido field. Neighbors had been petitioning for the dog park since last spring. more ›

Cyclist Warning: Cops Ticketing in Logan Circle

Bicyclist Jessie Posilkin sent an email to WABA this morning (and was kind enough to cc DCist) about another bicycle sting operation that looks like it's been set up in Logan Circle today. Posilkin reports that she was given a $25 ticket for going the wrong way on Vermont Ave. into the circle, much the same as the folks who were ticketed for going the wrong way on New Hampshire Ave. toward U Street back in July (and other times since, for that matter). While Posilkin admits breaking the law, she also notes that "there is no good way to enter Logan coming from Vermont- all routes seem inefficient (and the traffic lights at the different one way stops are confusing)." Cyclists heading in to the Logan area today, consider yourselves warned. more ›

Neighbors Petition for a Dog Park for Logan/Shaw Area

The commissioner for ANC 2F06, Michael Benardo, recently circulated an email with an online petition pushing for the creation of a dog park at the Shaw Recreation Field at 11th Street and Rhode Island Avenue NW. Now, anyone who lives in a ten block radius of Logan Circle knows that the neighborhood is in desperate need of a legal dog park. Just try walking through the circle itself at dusk sometime - odds are pretty good you'll be witness to an off-leash dog getting away from its owner and darting into traffic. more ›

Single Alcohol Sales Double Standard in Logan Circle
