DCist Exposed: Fifth Year Opens at Long View Gallery

             + 8 more

Once more, with feeling: night two of our official DCist Exposed Photography Show opening was as great as the first. Roughly 1,200 people came out over both evenings to see the work of our winning photographers, and hopefully had an easier, no-waiting-in-line, more breathable time doing so by splitting it up over two nights. more ›

Reminder: Get Your Tickets for DCist Exposed

Are you guys excited? With just over a week to go until the opening of the Fifth DCist Exposed Photography Show, we're ready to rock. Two nights of fun (March 15 and 16, 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.), fantastic photography, and a great bunch of photographers. Even your favorite DCist writers will be there, pouring drinks and chatting it up as DJ Sequoia spins some tunes. In addition to all that, we're proud to announce that Yuengling, America's oldest brewery, is sponsoring the show and providing lots of tasty beverages. more ›

DCist Exposed Tickets: On Sale Now

DCist Exposed Tickets: On Sale Now

As you're all aware by now, the 5th annual DCist Exposed Photography Show will kick off with not one, but two opening nights, March 15 and 16, 6 to 10 p.m. at Long View Gallery. Deciding on two nights wasn't easy and it adds to our expense. But we want this year's experience to be a little less crowded, with space for people to concentrate on what the show is all about: the photography.

This year, we're limiting each night to 500 people – in a 5,000-square-foot space, that should give us all plenty of breathing room, allow the HVAC to keep up and keep the fire marshal nice and happy. And to make this process a little easier and reduce your waiting time at the door, we're selling tickets in advance. more ›

And Now: Your 2011 DCist Exposed Photography Show Winners

If you spend about 10 seconds looking at each picture entered in the DCist Exposed contest, it would take you roughly three hours to make it through the over 1000 images submitted. Each of our judges spent that, and more, and did so gladly. more ›

Thanks for Making the 2010 DCist Exposed Show Our Biggest Yet

             + 8 more

We had a feeling that by holding the 2010 DCist Exposed Photography Show at the 5,000 sq. ft. Long View Gallery, we'd encourage a few more people to attend the opening reception this year. But we're not sure we were emotionally prepared for Saturday's big event to draw close to double the number of people who showed up last year. Eager early birds started lining up outside the door half an hour before the gallery even opened, peering in through the windows as we hurried to finish setting up the bars and music. By the end of the evening, roughly 1,800 of you made it inside, drinking and yes, even dancing through the night with us surrounded by 47 gorgeous photographs that celebrate the best of Washington, D.C. more ›

Reminder: Exposed Open For Viewing Today

We just wanted to take a moment this morning and thank all of you for coming out and making last night's 2010 Exposed opening a smashing success. While we will obviously have larger thank yous and plenty of images from the party to share in the coming week, we at DCist wanted to remind you that Exposed is showing on Sundays this year, including today -- the first time we've done that. Long View Gallery is open from 12 to 5 this afternoon -- while you're out and about enjoying today's immaculate weather, why not stop in and check it out? Obviously, all photographs on display in the exhibit are still for sale; if you saw a photo you loved last night (and let's be honest, who didn't?), but just didn't know who to talk to about purchasing, you should contact Long View at 202.232.4788 or our arts/managing editor Heather Goss at heather@dcist.com. more ›

Happy DCist Exposed Day!

Happy DCist Exposed Day!

I moved to D.C. in 2006, which -- though surely trailing several of you reading this right now in experience -- has been enough time to be here for the party on U Street after Obama's election, the first season of baseball's return to D.C., the running joke that was and is the Roy Pearson lawsuit, George Mason's magical run to the Final Four, snowpocalypses and many false alarms, last year's terrifying Red Line crash, and plenty of other notable events that I'm sure will be replaced in my mind by even more memorable days. Of course, this also means that I've been in town for three Exposed exhibits. And every year -- much like our awesome photography pool -- Exposed has gotten bigger, more diverse and just...better. It's not just a chance to take in some excellent photographic work, but a chance for us to connect with those of you who have experienced all of the above alongside us. To say we all look forward to Exposed every year would be a gross understatement. more ›

DCist Exposed Photography Show opens Saturday, March 6

That's just eight short days from now! It's time to get excited, folks. Next Saturday, March 6, from 6 to 10 p.m., we'll be at Long View Gallery to celebrate 47 fantastic photographs that each showcase our city in a different way. More than an art show, DCist Exposed is a celebration of local talent: the awesome photographers who contribute images to DCist, and the faithful readers (that's you!) who click through to see them every day. more ›

And Now: Your 2010 DCist Exposed Photography Show Winners

We love judging the DCist Exposed contest. We already see every day how talented our regular contributors are, so you might imagine how much we look forward to this annual "best of" pool -- and how hard it is to pick just a handful to showcase in our annual show. If you have a couple hours free, head over to the pool and hit "slideshow" in the upper right to see all of the 2010 entries. more ›

Announcing the 2010 DCist Exposed Photography Show

Believe it or not, this year marks the fourth annual DCist Exposed Photography Show. For three years in a row, we've had the pleasure of working with local galleries to show off the stellar work of our photography community. We conceived the exhibit in 2005 as a "thank you" to our thousands of contributors -- our Flickr pool currently has over 2500 members and nearly 70,000 images. Just over five years ago, when DCist.com was just a tiny speck of the Internet, we started asking readers to submit images that we could use to illustrate our posts, and the success of that endeavor is part of the reason the site has grown to the readership it has today. more ›

DCist Preview: Long View Gallery's New, Massive Space

Long a fixture in the small Shaw rowhouse at the corner of 9th and N Streets NW across from the Convention Center, the Long View Gallery has moved a half block south to the larger-than-life, newly renovated 5000 square foot building owned by Douglas Development at 1234 9th Street NW. This Thursday, the gallery marks their grand opening with a celebratory gala and artists salon featuring many of the tried-and-true D.C. area artists who often populated the walls of the former venue, including Dana Ellyn, Matt Sesow, Drew Ernst, Scott Brooks, and Billy Colbert. more ›

National Coming Out Day, LGBT Events in D.C.

National Coming Out Day, LGBT Events in D.C.

Today is National Coming Out Day, a day when gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people are encouraged to be open about who they are. The annual observance began on October 11, 1988, exactly one year after the Second National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights. (The first one was held October 14, 1979.) While there aren't usually major events to commemorate the day, there are a couple of local events that coincide with... more ›

Arts Agenda: It's Go Time!

Let's see. What could possibly be going on in the arts this weekend? Hmm, oh right. DCist Exposed has been getting some love from the Post (did you check out last weekend's Sunday Source?), Washingtonian, and a whole slew of online sources. We just got back from hanging the show and, oh man, it looks great, so we hope you'll give it some love, too, tomorrow night at Warehouse, 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Please forgive... more ›

Arts Agenda: No Costume Required (Updated)

Arts Agenda: No Costume Required (Updated)

There's more to this weekend than axe-wielding haunted house props and bars full of Sexy Nurses sexily vomiting from too many Jäger bombs. Those of you who feel pained at the thought of breaking out the zombie costume again have a wealth of options to satiate your creative side without resorting to make-up that'll make you break out like a 15 year-old for the next month. Now that I've completely earned the ire of half my fellow, but inexplicibly pro-Halloween DCist staffers, let's get to the agenda. Jeans and t-shirts encouraged at all events. more ›
