Nearly 700 people marched through the streets last night in response to recent violent crimes targeting gay and transgender victims. The march garnered the attention of D.C. Council members and D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier.

Occupy Marchers Arrive in D.C. After 240-Mile Trek
"We made it!" The marchers yelled as they crossed Eastern Avenue into the District at 12:30 p.m., soggy, tired and running behind schedule. But their brief moment of happiness was set aside as they kept to marching down Rhode Island Avenue, a few more miles to go until they would reach their welcoming committee.

Carefully escorted by police through downtown D.C. and into Georgetown, 200-plus Occupy D.C. protesters made it to the Key Bridge without issue this afternoon. Though traffic was stopped along the route and on the Key Bridge as the marchers approached, it resumed once protesters made it on to the bridge's sidewalk.

No Tweetation Without Representation
Mayor and DCist commenter Vince Gray has never been afraid to dive headfirst into the (occasionally shallow) social media pool. So it's hardly surprising that the man who is using the dedication of the new Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial as an excuse to drive hard to the hoop for voting rights is asking Facebook and Twitter users to join in. But we would have figured that a simple hashtag would have sufficed.

Brown, regarding the the firing of approximately 40 workers from Chipotle's Columbia Heights, Woodley Park and Chinatown locations. Tonight, on the 20th anniversary of violent clashes between police and the Latino community in Mount Pleasant, the same group will march from Sacred Heart Church at 16th Street and Park Road NW to the Chipotle at 3113 14th Street NW in another demonstration against the mass firings.

Anti-Walmart Types Gather Under Terrifying Logo
Sure, there are other anti-Walmart groups popping up around town, but this is the only one we know of which features a smiley face feasting on the District flag. I mean, just look at that logo! And wait...is the flag supposed to be bleeding? I'm going to go ahead and guess that was intentional.
Adorable Children Can Be Quite Persuasive, You Know
So here's something to make you smile on this Friday morning -- about 100 kids and a smattering of adults from Meridian Public Charter School, marching down U Street, enthusiastically encouraging people to help the homeless.

On Saturday, before the D.C. United-Toronto FC game, about 500 United fans marched from Lincoln Park to RFK Stadium in support of keeping the team in the D.C. area. The march was organized by fans and supporters' groups and had the support of the team.
Saturday Greenwashing Could Only Help Photo: March 7, 2009
This photo by lovedc looks to me like an illustration of the dystopian collective future nightmare of the Powershift '09 conference that visited D.C. last week -- a scene from a dark scenario, in which the nation's efforts to create green jobs and energy alternatives fell too short. Alas! But maybe that is a little bit trenchant for a warm March Saturday morning.
