Saturday Give 'Em the Stinkface Photo: June 4, 2011

Awww, don't fret young man. We all know about the torturous weather that ransacked the D.C.-area this past Memorial Day weekend, but have you been outside at all today? Even our great weather clairvoyants can't get this forecast wrong: it's damn near perfect. The DCist Flickr pool continues to be populated by photos from events across the region from last weekend. But this one stands out from the mass. While the crowds enjoyed the festivities and day off -- from the performers' points of view -- the conditions were grimace-inducing. But thanks for toughing it out guys. more ›

Four Metro Stations To Close Over Memorial Day Weekend

Four Metro Stations To Close Over Memorial Day Weekend

It's been a painful 2011 for Blue and Orange Line riders, what with more than on weekend project that has cut the lines in two. That trend will continue over the Memorial Day weekend, I'm afraid. more ›

Blue/Orange Line Service To Be Affected Over Memorial Day Weekend

Blue/Orange Line Service To Be Affected Over Memorial Day Weekend

It's actually been a relatively quiet couple of weeks on the Metro maintenance front -- for example, this upcoming weekend's slate is about as non-intrusive as Metro weekend maintenance gets these days -- but it's really just the calm before the next big Orange and Blue Line storm, which will arrive over Memorial Day weekend. more ›

Just Your Friendly Memorial Day Metro Reminder

Just Your Friendly Memorial Day Metro Reminder

Just as Sommer pointed out before the weekend, WMATA is proceeding with a number of changes to today's Metrorail and bus schedules. Metrorail, Metrobus, MetroAccess, RideOn, and DASH are all operating on a regular Sunday schedule. That means the Metro trains will operate until midnight -- afterall, it is a school-night. Also, there will be no train service between the East Falls Church and West Falls Church-VT/UVA Metrorail stations to allow for the Dulles Rail Project. Orange Line riders will have to use a shuttle to circumvent the gap in service and should tack-on 30 extra minutes of travel time. more ›

Memorial Day Parade Marches On, Prepare for Road Closures

Memorial Day Parade Marches On, Prepare for Road Closures

As the holiday weekend comes to a close The Metropolitan Police Department and the U.S. Park Police are warning of one last slew of road closures in preparation for the Memorial Day Parade. The parade's route will take it from the corner of Constitution Avenue and 7th Streets NW, head west to 18th Street and turn north on Virginia Avenue into the dispersal area. The parade steps off at 2 p.m. and will last about three hours, however several closing have been in effect since this morning. more ›

Morning Roundup: Sunny and Solemn Edition

Morning Roundup: Sunny and Solemn Edition

Happy Memorial Day, D.C. Here's hoping that you're all having an easy and languorous 3-day weekend. I know Sommer is enjoying hers, so this week DCist will be featuring guest editors. So sit back, crack a cold one and find relief from today’s heat. But if you find yourself outside, take note of the sounds of the holiday: the splish-splash at a public pool, the blaring brass of any Memorial Day parade or the low, rumbling remnants of yesterday's Rolling Thunder ride. more ›

Thanks For The Day Off, General Logan

Thanks For The Day Off, General Logan

You all know John A. Logan, right? He's that guy on that horse to the right there. Now, maybe you're not familiar with his entire CV, but the man from the Land of Lincoln is pretty much an American legend. How do we know? Well, having your signature prominently displayed on your Wikipedia page confers immediate bigshot status. (You know, as if a humongous statue erected in your honor in the middle of the nation's capital wasn't enough of an status indicator.) Logan is one of the more accomplished individuals in the country's history -- not many other folks can claim to have been a General, a Representative, a Senator, and have a county in Kansas named after them. more ›

Morning Roundup: Memorial Day Edition

Morning Roundup: Memorial Day Edition

Happy Memorial Day, D.C. As we pointed out earlier this weekend, news makers and news recorders are taking things easy this weekend. Hopefully, you're similarly preparing to fire up the grill well in advance of rain showers which will likely happen this afternoon. But if, for whatever reason, you're voluntarily or compulsorily stuck in front of a monitor today, here's some news to get your day rolling. more ›

Click Click: Rolling Thunder

On the subject of long-haulin' it, Charlie Daniels has perhaps the definitive word. In the liner notes to his legendary 1974 album , Daniels wrote, "Hungover. Red eyed. Dog tired. Satisfied. It's a long road with a little wheel and it takes a lot of turns to get there. Thank you, damn it." more ›

Metro Schedule for the Memorial Day Holiday Weekend

Note that on Monday, Memorial Day, Metrorail, Metrobus and MetroAccess will all operate on a Sunday schedule, with the Metrorail system open from 7 a.m. to midnight. Parking at all Metro-operated lots will also be free on Monday. Check the full schedule for more details. more ›

Memorial Day Traffic's Gonna Suck

It's almost time to hit the road for the shore, and AAA Mid-Atlantic has per usual put out its prediction for holiday weekend traffic. Bad news, area drivers: they're putting it a 4 percent increase over last year, and as we recall, last year was pretty terrible in its own right. An estimated 608,000 D.C.-area residents will be traveling by car this Memorial Day holiday weekend, versus 49,000 who will be flying. Please to consider carpooling, fellow travelers. We don't want to have to end up in a road rage-fueled shoulder-driving expedition followed by eventual arrest and the paying of big fines. It'd really put a damper on our BBQ plans. more ›

America! FOOD YEAH!

America! FOOD YEAH!

As we noted yesterday, today is Patriot Day; so conceived to commemorate the 9-11 attacks—even though we Americans aren't the greatest at "commemorating," see: Veterans' Day, Memorial Day, etc. Just six years on, though, feelings are still raw and memories vibrant. Resiliency is a virtue of our citizenry however, and if nothing else, we can get a hearty laugh out of OBL's radical beard transformation, his decidedly porno 'stache, and threats of attack via the... more ›

Capital Pride Hits its Stride

Capital Pride Hits its Stride

Written by Adam Bailey Hey Washington, it's Pride Weekend! Following the warm up of Memorial Day's Black Pride, LGBT Washington and thousands of visitors will gather this weekend for celebrations like tomorrow's parade (through the Dupont and Logan Circle neighborhoods) and Sunday's street festival (between the Archives and the Capitol). Swing by the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network's booth while you're down there; they should be jubilant given today's news that Peter "Gays are Immoral" Pace... more ›

Marching Band Your Way to the End of the Day

Getting through the work week after a long weekend can often be a drag. We loved this video of the Washington-Marion Magnet High School marching band, from Lake Charles, LA, practicing before their turn in the annual Memorial Day Parade on Monday along Constitution Ave. Maybe it'll brighten up the rest of your work day like it did ours. If you caught any of the parade, let us know who your favorite bands were in the comments. more ›

Photo of the Day: May 29, 2007

Looks like lots of folks stuck around for the Memorial Day events in D.C. this weekend. There are some fantastic shots of Rolling Thunder celebrating their 20th anniversary, poingant images of families visiting their loved ones at Arlington Cemetery, and some more lighthearted shots like this one, of a sweet Model A Ford brought out by the Marines. Flickr user {ryan} describes them by how hard they were to shoot, the "chrome and paint... more ›

Elsewhere in the Ist-a-verse

All across the Ist-A-Verse (or at least the American parts thereof), writers and editors are in the midst of enjoying their three-day weekend. But after the week we've all had, we feel like the break is not only needed, but deserved. Just look at everything we've been doing! Gothamist headed into the Memorial Day weekend with a number of tasks accomplished. They worried about Long Islanders giving New Yorkers a bad name. They tried... more ›

Whether you're staying in town to enjoy a little extra breathing room or escaping via bus, train, car or plane, we'd like to wish you a wonderful and safe weekend. If you're like me, you're driving out to the beach despite surging gas prices -- but according to the WaPo, we're not alone. According to AAA Mid-Atlantic, a record number of Washington area drivers will take to the highways this Memorial Day weekend, gas prices be damned. Apparently we all really like getting sunburned. Photo of the Day: May 24, 2007

The descent into a holiday weekend always takes so long. Does anyone else wish it was Friday yet? I'm betting that many of you are taking tomorrow off, so today is your Friday. That said, is it happy hour yet? Samer Farha thinks so. His photo of Legacy's Hedonism Ale is a clarion call through the haze of the pre-Memorial Day rush on the Hill, the silence of a 3/4 empty government agency, or... more ›

Morning Roundup: Fear Of Flip-Flops Edition

Morning Roundup: Fear Of Flip-Flops Edition

Good morning, Washington. We pestered you yesterday about your Memorial Day plans. Today, a word of warning: make sure they don't include flip-flops. As FOX5 helpfully warns us, the sandals can lead to sprains, broken bones or even the dreaded Flipflop-Induced Foot Failure Syndrome (aka FIFFS). We had no idea we were in such peril. Bad Day For Bobb: Yesterday the U.S. Senate unanimously approved Mayor Fenty's school takeover plan. Rest assured, we'll have... more ›

Get Out of Town This Weekend

Get Out of Town This Weekend

Memorial Day is this Monday, meaning a lot of Washingtonians have a three day weekend. With the extra day comes extra opportunity to take a day trip (or two) around the area. And if you have any other good suggestions, let us... more ›

Classical Music Agenda

Classical Music Agenda

Summer is almost here, and that means it is almost time to roll up the carpets and send the Classical Music Agenda on vacation. So enjoy the music while you can. In particular, this is the last week to take in a performance of the best production from Washington National Opera this season, Janáček's Jenůfa. My review called this opera "essential viewing for anyone who cares about music drama." Performances remain only on Monday (May... more ›
