Expect Traffic at Today's Haiti Memorial Mass

The District Department of Transportation issued a traffic alert for the Haiti memorial mass scheduled for 1:30 p.m. today at Sacred Heart Church, located at 16th Street and Park Road in NW. DDOT predicts large crowds and traffic on 16th Street between Irving and Newton Streets and on Park Road between 14th and 17th Streets. There is a small irony in a Haiti memorial service prompting severe traffic, since traffic has been such a severe problem for Haiti. New Hampshire air traffic controllers were in fact dispatched today to help alleviate congestion at Haiti's primary airport, while the Los Angeles Times reports that three newly opened airports and the now partially opened port will greatly enhance recovery efforts. more ›

Memorial Service for Ben Ali

The Ali family is holding a memorial service today for Ben's Chili Bowl co-founder Ben Ali, who died last week at 82. The memorial service actually began a short while ago, at noon, at the Lincoln Theater on U Street. While the service is open to the public, the short notice implies mostly family, friends and colleagues are in attendance today. In a message on the Ben's web site, the family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Ben's Chili Bowl Family Foundation, a non-profit organization, at 1213 U Street NW, Washington, DC, 20009. more ›
