The Capitals knocked off the 2011 Stanley Cup champions after beating the Boston Bruins 2-1 in Game 7 of the first round of the NHL Playoffs on an overtime goal by fourth-line forward Joel Ward.
The Ice of Boston Is Lovely: Capitals Knock Off Reigning Stanley Cup Champions in Game 7
Knuble the Unexpected Hero in Caps' Win Over Pens
Thanks to those of us who think hockey is the coolest thing since the Ice Age, Wednesday's matchup -- the NHL-best Washington Capitals against the defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins -- was in danger of being the most over-analyzed 60 minutes yet in 2010.
Caps Cut Themselves No Slack After 3-2 Loss
It's not the kind of words you'd expect to hear from a team that's clinched its division a whole month before the end of the regular season, but Capitals winger Mike Knuble thinks the team needs to play with more urgency -- and be stronger collectively.
Last Night's Action: How Sweet It Is
Capitals 5, Penguins 4 (OT): It's quite possible that this was the biggest regular season NHL game in years -- a nationally-televised matinee on Super Bowl Sunday, featuring the two (three, if you include Evgeni Malkin) best players in the game and the defending champs versus the hottest team in the world. And the Capitals won, scoring four unanswered goals to push their winning streak to 14 straight. A game like this deserves a few toasts. Shall we?
Caps Briefing: Getting the Message
Tonight the Capitals came from behind to beat the Florida Panthers 7-4. With Alex Ovechkin and Mike Green among a slew of injured players, Mike Knuble put up four points to spark the win. The total tied his personal best, from Valentine's Day, 2003. Asked what it was like to be a leader on this team, Knuble calmly dismissed the assertion. "It's just one game," he said, talking up the importance of hard work over a long season.
Close, But No Cigar for Caps in 3-2 Loss To Devils
It was the Mike and Mike show goal-wise at the Phone Booth on Monday: Mike Green scored his first goal of the season, and Mike Knuble had a goal and an assist. But after those tallies staked the home team to a 2-0 lead at the end of the first period, the Caps stumbled, eventually losing in a shootout to the New Jersey Devils.
Caps Briefing: Undefeated
After last night's 6-4 victory over Toronto, the season the Caps are undefeated and scoring two goals for every one they give up. They have been defensively perfect from the start of any match until they have at least three goals of their own. Superstars Alexander Ovechkin and Alexander Semin have scored three points in each game. Both Caps starting goalies have won. The whole team is playing well. Everybody is doing their job to a tee and the fans are going crazy.
Knuble, Ovechkin Shine In 6-2 Offensive Explosion
The Caps' roster may be leaner (six cuts Tuesday trimmed the roster down to 36) but it showed some serious muscle offensively and defensively in a 6-2 preseason win over Chicago Wednesday at the Verizon Center.
Caps Briefing: Free Agents, Rookies and Trades, Oh My
After the first draft in nearly a decade where the Caps didn't make an exciting trade or a high-profile pick, it's good to see the front office back into the mix of things, adding forward Mike Knuble at the dawn of free agency this afternoon. Costing just over $5 million for two years, Knuble snugly fits into the team's payroll as a replacement for Viktor Kozlov, who will play in his native Russia this season.
