We had heard rumors that Apple had settled on purchasing 1229 Wisconsin Ave. NW in Georgetown, but the Washington Business Journal confirmed the news on Friday. The building, sold on Sept. 27 to Apple Inc., is currently occupied by French Connection. The main intersection in Georgetown, at Wisconsin and M Streets NW, could soon be known for more than over-priced boutiques and terrible traffic. Council member Jack Evans (D-Ward 2) has introduced a bill that would name the intersection "Joe Pozell Square," after D.C. reserve police officer Joseph Pozell, who directed traffic in the intersection for years. Lulu's has long been a fixture at the changing corner of 22nd and M Streets NW. Longtime owner Ulysses "Blackie" Auger sold Lulu's years ago, and when he passed away in November 2004, his family opted to sell sibling Blackie's House of Beef. Blackie's went to the great restaurant slaughterhouse in the sky on New Year's Eve. And Lulu's will climb its own 13 stairs -- no doubt made of wrought-iron -- at 4 a.m. Saturday.
