Uptown Theater Not Closing, Despite Rumors

A flurry of frantic, angry emails began around 6 p.m. last night on the Cleveland Park Listserve and moved seemingly all over town by 8 p.m. It was the end of civilization as we know it! A catastrophe of epic proportions! Alert the National Guard! The Uptown Theater might be closing! Thankfully, cooler heads have now prevailed. Turns out the rumor got started because the Jews for Jesus outfit McLean Bible Church put up... more ›

Morning Roundup: Another Summer Vacation Ends Edition

Morning Roundup: Another Summer Vacation Ends Edition

Happy Monday, Washington. Looks like we might start the week with a little rain, no doubt the salty tears of a thousand schoolchildren as they tuck away the summer toys and fill their backpacks with clean notebooks and sharpened pencils. School is back in session this morning for the D.C. Public Schools, and just as kids everywhere feel unprepared in the face of a new year, the schools themselves may be just as unprepared for them. more ›

In Case of Emergency, Consult Confusing Schematic

In Case of Emergency, Consult Confusing Schematic

The Examiner has an interesting story today on leadership roles in the event of a Washington emergency situation. Apparently, if the city comes under a major terrorist attack, charge of ths situation is not to be taken by the President, or the Vice President, or Karl Rove, or Alexander Haig. As it so happens, Mayor Williams is supposed to be in charge. Sort of. He's in charge, but he doesn't have the authority to call... more ›

Morning Roundup: What Type of Tree Is That Edition

Morning Roundup: What Type of Tree Is That Edition

So, is that tall, festively-decorated spruce tree you have in that public building a Christmas tree? A seemingly innocuous question has District officials in a tizzy, with some demanding that their trees be recognized as "Christmas" trees while others prefer the PC, non-denominational "holiday" designation. The D.C. National Guard opts for "Christmas," the District Department of Transportation chooses "holiday." So which should it be? more ›

Mayor's Blog Dies

Mayor's Blog Dies

After a brave but fruitless fight, District officials today announced that D.C. Mayor Anthony Williams' official blog has passed away. No services have yet been scheduled, and Williams was unavailable for comment at press time. City officials remained mostly quiet on the blog's passing, though one individual close to the mayor remarked, "Williams had a blog? Really?" Bloggers unofficially stick to the rule that a blog that goes without an update for 30 days or... more ›

RFK Naming Suspense Comes to an End

Just in the nick of time, Mayor Anthony Williams announced early this morning that a deal had been worked out for RFK's naming rights. While the formal announcement isn't expected until 11:30 a.m., Williams appeared on both WTOP and Fox 5 News this morning and hinted that RFK would become the "Armed Forces Field at RFK." Under the terms of deal, the military would pay $6 million over three years for recruitment kiosks and signage... more ›

More Random News on the Nats

Stadium Naming Deal Close to Complete: The Post reported on Saturday that a deal to sell the naming rights to RFK for the next three years may be completed before the Nats home-opener this Thursday. The possible winner? Not the dedicated democracy activists looking to tag RFK the "Taxation Without Representation Field at RFK Stadium," who to date have raised $36,549 in pledges, but rather the National Guard. The Guard, with over 300,000 members nationwide,... more ›

D.C. Air Guard Jet Attacks Garden State

Fortunately nobody was hurt, but a D.C. Air National Guard jet based out of Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland accidentally attacked a school in Little Egg Harbor, N.J., during a nighttime training run. School officials discovered that two dozen rounds of ammunition pierced the roof of the school, the Post reports. We wonder if citizens in New Jersey would consider this an act of war. After all, Michigan and Ohio did go to war... more ›
