With over a quarter century having passed since its earliest hits, Depeche Mode is an act with cross-generational appeal. So when the houselights dimmed to signal the start of last night's show at Nissan Pavilion, fortysomethings, college students, and 10-year olds alike rose to their feet. A band doesn't achieve that kind of staying power on luck alone, it has to be doing something right. In this latest iteration of Depeche Mode's Tour of the Universe, the electro-pop icons marched through a set list that mixed new material with decades old classics, and pulsating electronic beats with gentle ballads. Yes, the boys from across the pond still have it.

Last night I joined over 23,000 or so other people and made the trek out to Bristow to see No Doubt at Nissan Pavilion. Gwen Stefani and the Boys are back out on tour for the first time in five years, and judging from the crowds they've been bringing in, people really missed them. I can't say I was ever a fan of the band, but I certainly was impressed with their show last night (and Stefani's abs. As flat as you may think her stomach is, it's flatter in person). I'm sure it was everything a No Doubt fan could ask for. Since they have no new material to promote (save for a newly recorded Adam & the Ants cover of "Stand & Deliver) the band focused on their hits and threw in a few other covers for good measure. "Hella Good," the second song in the set, was particularly impressive, leaning more on Tony Kanal's slinky bassline than the recorded version.
The Post makes the right call on today's rally planned for Sen. Barack Obama at Nissan Pavilion is Bristow, Va. It's going to be a traffic nightmare of epic proportions. You thought the Radiohead debacle was bad? Imagine a free 6 p.m. event open to all comers that will kickoff a historic national campaign for president by a candidate with huge support from young, enthusiastic, politically-minded, college-educated Democrats in a metro area that has one of the highest concentrations of same anywhere in the country.
The heated comments in today's Morning Roundup mostly concern what appears to have been a really rough, weather-related time for concert goers at Sunday night's Radiohead concert at Nissan Pavilion in Bristow, Va. Consumerist has since picked up the thread, highlighting some of the more incensed venting on the part of fans who were turned away from the venue thanks to road flooding and parking issues at the sold-out concert.
Today, Radiohead kicks off its In Rainbows world tour in West Palm Beach, Florida, which means that D.C.-area fans are mere days away from getting their fix.
As you may have already noticed (look left), Radiohead announced their first batch of U.S. tour dates today (for real this time!), ending months of speculation as to where and when the band will play on its 2008 tour. Looks like Oxford's finest will bring their legendary live show to the Nissan Pavilion in Bristow, Virginia on Sunday, May 11th. Tickets go on sale this Saturday at 10 am via Live Nation and range from $35 for lawn seats to $55 for assigned seating. If you're a W.A.S.T.E. member, rumor has it that you'll have a crack at snagging some tickets early during a Valentine's Day pre-sale.
It looks like I.M.P., the Montgomery County-based company that runs the 9:30 Club and Merriweather Post Pavilion, hasn't given up on opening a Silver Spring music hall. In September, we wrote that concert producer and venue owner Live Nation had signed a non-binding letter of intent to put a Fillmore music hall in the old J.C. Penney store at Georgia Avenue and Colesville Road in Silver Spring, across from the AFI Silver Theater. Both the...
Good morning, Washington. It looks like California's still on fire, and likely to remain so. Most versions of the aforelinked AP story include the phrase "firefighters all but concede defeat," and the Post is calling the resulting evacuation the largest in modern history. It all sounds pretty grim. Good luck, West Coast. Yet More Stadium Parking Controversy: The Post reports on the latest in a seemingly neverending series of deliberations over parking at the...
We noted awhile ago that the owners of the Birchmere had been in talks to open another venue in Silver Spring — while that has fallen by the wayside, it looks like Live Nation will be moving in instead. The Clear Channel spinoff, which produces concerts and owns music venues around the country, including Nissan Pavilion, various Fillmores, and the House of Blues chain, signed a letter of intent to build in an old J.C....
Korn has one, and so does Ozzy. Having a summer rock festival is just something the big boys do, and Linkin Park is no different. Yesterday the band's Projekt Revolution tour came to Nissan Pavilion, promising a diverse bill of hard rock bands on two stages. Now in its fourth year, the tour has in the past featured Korn, Snoop Dogg, Mudvayne, Cypress Hill, Xzibit and Less Than Jake, lineups more eclectic than Korn's...
'Tis the season for outdoor venues, and it just so happens the greater D.C. area has a plethora of them. Outside the confines of our beloved Fort Reno, Wolftrap, Merriweather Post Pavilion, Nissan Pavilion, and a few more decent venues all exist within an hour of the District. They might require a bit of a hike, and usually a car, but if you have the means, might as well pick up a cheap lawn seat...
By DCist contributor Celeste Dawn Mitchell Two thousand of the khaki crowd's finest came out to party Thursday at Friends of the National Zoo's Young Professionals' (or FONZ YP's, if you will) sold-out Brew at the Zoo. Proceeds went toward its Asian elephant conservation project. Just in case patrons forgot they were partying for a cause, four-ounce fill-lines on souvenir mugs intimated that this was a classy tasting affair, not a frat kegger. Though...
Monday >> Struggling through another slow week of the 9-5? Well there's a Labor Day light at the end of the tunnel and what better way to get you there than with two very loud and bold female punk songstresses who will shake you right into the weekend. Catch Full Minute of Mercury (***) and Knives in the Attic tonight at DC9. 8pm, $8. Tuesday >> While Shakira works out her Oral Fixation, Wyclef...
Last year we once again perused, dumbfounded, the Post's Best Bets lists, lamenting the way in which they painted our town with the beige brushstrokes of national chain blandness. We fumed a bit, and then we listened to our commenters, who reminded us that the entries were nominated and voted on by Post readers, who tend to be old, suburban, and clueless. This made us feel better, but we still resolved not to forget when...
Before we kick off this week's suggestions, a quick note about Sunday's show at the Black Cat. The Lovely Feathers were good, Dr Dog was great, and The Spinto Band was freakin phenomenal. What a tremendous bunch of characters those guys are, we haven't seen head shaking like that since That Thing You Do. TUESDAY: >> We'll be honest -- we can't exactly picture Trent Reznor playing in an amphitheater. But it's a plan so...
We successfully sailed the ocean blue and are back with this week's shortened music picks. TUESDAY >> It's an early show/late show kind of night at the 9:30 Club (directions from DCist Maps). Come by at 6 p.m. to catch Anna Nalick, the songstress TV networks love to dramatize commercials with, for $15. Pound a Red Bull and stay for the late show as Blues Traveler gets all your harmonica lovin' ya yas out. $25,...
DCist did not attend Coldplay's long-awaited show at Nissan Pavilion on Friday, and based on the reviews coming our way, we're almost happy that we didn't. Various friends and readers have tipped us off to one reality that soured many a Coldplay fan's night -- nightmarish traffic. One reader reported a three-hour crawl over 30 miles, another ran head on into a two-hour wait to exit the parking area after the show but before the...
Monday: We love to start our weeks with a bang. Go have dinner in Little Ethiopia, then make your way to DC9 for some good old-fashioned punk with The Vibrators, The Screws, and Corrupted Youth. Bang! $8. Tuesday: Presumably, at some point, Sufjan Stevens is going to finish serenading the Rust Belt and start penning tributes to the Mid-Atlantic. And what we all want to know is, is he going give the District some love?...
As the Hot Ticket turns into the pleasantly, autumnally cool ticket, there are certain hot items that will go without saying from now on, so don't ask why we haven't mentioned them. These are: 1) You should all be ashamed for not going to Nats games while there are a few left in this inaugural season, but we're not going to mention this anymore. 2) There is, apparently, a professional football team in the area,...
MONDAY: >>Lucinda Williams brings her raspy voice to the D.C. tonight. Her Tom Petty-inspired brand of roots rock can be heard on her latest album, Live At The Fillmore. Or you can catch the real thing tonight at the 9:30 Club. $35, 7:30. >>Grab your Coke, gel your hair, and spend the evening with the man who made teenagers and soccer moms wear out their voting fingers in 2003. Clay Aiken at Wolf Trap, $25...
From DCist contributor Ryan Avent MONDAY: >> Monday is an excellent time to visit Fort Reno as Garland of Hours (featuring noted DC cellist Amy Domingues and a Fugazi rhythm section) take the stage. They’re joined by DCist favorite The Aquarium and by local songwriter-slash-St. Ex bartender Paul Michel. The show is free as always and begins about 7:15. Click here to read last week’s interview with Paul Michel. >> If tranquil melodies are your...
(Review and pictures from DCist contributor Jeff Simmermon) Although we did not skate or harbor elaborate revenge fantasies in high school, we do enjoy a bit of metal from time to time. When our friend with connection to this summer's Ozzfest rang us up Sunday morning with backstage passes, we were on it like dogs on a slaughterhouse dumpster. Here are some snapshots of the bands we saw at Nissan Pavilion; pictures and reviews are...
(From DCist contributor Amanda Mattos) To play in D.C. this week, you apparently have to have played at Bonnaroo, been involved with a movie star, or started your career here. MONDAY: >>After a 2004 tour with the Blind Boys of Alabama, and countless appearances on mix CDs burned in dorm rooms, Ben Harper (at right) alights the 9:30 Club with friend and cohort, Tom Freund. The two recorded the album Pleasure & Pain together in...
Sorry for the delay in this week's music agenda - sun, surf, and a whole lotta beer over the Memorial Day weekend kept us from getting it to you in a more timely manner. But judging by the absolute clamor from those wondering where it was (okay, the one email kind of vaguely asking what was up), we figured, though it's late in the week, that we'd put it together anyway. But first things first!...

From DCist contributor Catherine Andrews: It's a dreary Tuesday here in the District, with no end in sight to the August humidity. But fear not, fellow DCists! We've got some entertainment picks for this evening that should have you kicking up your heels and forgetting the workaday woes (and those pesky terror threats) for the night. First, you can take a walk down musical memory lane with your pick of a couple of retro...
