Londonist are starting to think their city is getting just a little bit too expensive, when even Christian Slater can't afford to go out there. And there's no escaping, as local singer Lily Allen discovered when she was barred entry to the US. The British mapping agency caused further bad karma, by blocking a 3-D representation of London in Google Earth. But the smiles returned to Londonist's faces as they interviewed Baroness von Reichardt,...

The longest day of the year has just passed us by, the solstice bells have rung out, and far to the north they've seen the sun at midnight. Here in Washington, we brace for the brutal heat we've only just tasted up to now. There is some consolation for the misery mother nature heaps on D.C.'s coming dog days. For many lucky office drones, in summertime the living truly can be easy. That filing that's...

Way back in April, Flickr user Olivia Leigh gave us a taste of springtime love (or, at least, springtime tongue wrestling) at the Hirshhorn, and recently posted the second shot from that series. It seems a fitting way to remember the warm weather as the days get shorter and the nights get colder.

Today's photo, by Flickr user Bsivad, was chosen more for its content than its technical merit (which is not to imply that it lacks technical merit). It's a shot of the timekeeper at a D.C. Ward 6 candidates forum letting whomever is speaking know how much time they have left. The photo was taken on a Nikon D1; no EXIF data is listed. Some other photos worth checking out are this gorgeous shot by Olivia Leigh and this shot, which is vaguely similar to yesterday's photo.

Today's photos is a gorgeous black and white composition taken by Olivia Leigh on a recent trip to the Hirshorn. The photo was taken on a Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT. You can see the EXIF data here. Nice shot Olivia!

It's no secret that this Thursday and Friday afternoon thousands of area employees will "run errands," sneak off to the office TV lounge, or otherwise alt-tab their way through the day as NCAA conference tournament play blesses us all with daytime television that doesn't suck. March Madness isn't the only productivity killer available this week, however.

Don't get too comfortable on that bus -- it might not be around for too long. WMATA is set to announce a series of service changes today, including cutting 28 of 57 bus routes that run after midnight. Those cuts -- 12 in the District, seven in Maryland, and nine in Virginia -- would allow WMATA to save $2.4 million, notes the Examiner. The transit agency is also looking to free up $4.3 million to...

Our schizophrenic winter continues this morning as a confused mess of frozen and unfrozen precipitation falls across the region. I woke up early enough to catch a few flakes falling in Brookland, but it appears to have now switched over entirely to rain. Yippee. Tangherlini to Improve MetroAccess: Metro had often cast itself as the wronged when facing accusations of poor MetroAccess service, but with a new man at the helm, the transportation agency is...

Since late last month, when the idea of the extending the Yellow Line beyond its terminus at Mt. Vernon Square/Convention Center was formally introduced to the public, moves have been made that might finally make the extension a reality. Council-member Jim Graham (D-Ward 1), assured residents attending the Cardozo-Shaw Neighborhood Association meeting last night that he believes he will be able to secure funding to extend the Yellow Line to Ft. Totten beginning as early...

For some reason, today is particularly heavy on Metro-related news. And yes, we know, Metro Friday isn't nearly as catchy as Transit on Thursday, originally authored by former editor Mike Grass, but we'll be resurrecting that feature soon enough. Until then, we were lucky enough to find that picture at left, snapped by Olivia Leigh and posted on Flickr. Forget the naysayers -- Metrorail stations are beautiful in their own cathedral-like way. Metro Security to...

Good morning Washington. With all the Supreme Court news this morning (no, Rehnquist hasn't announced his retirement yet, but here's Linda Greenhouse's piece in the NYT about the Ten Commandments ruling and Carol D. Leonnig's piece in the Post about what the next step is for Judith Miller and Matthew Cooper since the high court refused to intervene in their cases) we thought it fitting to feature Olivia Leigh's photo of the Supreme Court she...

It's finally opening. The long-awaited Giant supermarket on Park Road in Columbia Heights is welcoming in the neighborhood. It's been getting good marks for its initial debut.
