Monopoly may be coming early to the budding satellite radio industry as XM Radio and Sirius attempt a marriage of convenience (with just a hint of desperation). A joint statement from the companies calls the move an "all-stock merger of equals." Word on the street is that the companies would likely keep much of their offices both in New York (Sirius) and Washington (XM), but certainly some layoffs and job consolidation would follow. Over the past few months, we've noticed a direct proportional relationship between the price of gas and the absurdity of the ideas for reducing fuel costs coming out of our politicians. Our favorites so far have been the Oprah-esque ploy to give out $100 fuel vouchers (You get a check! You get a check! Everyone gets a check!!!) and the suggestion that maybe we should get rid of some of our environmental laws to lower costs (because if you can't have cheap fuel, clean air is pretty worthless). But not one of these ideas has really acknowledged the role transit can play in helping with both gas prices and our energy problems in general.
