Three Out of Five Ain't Bad: Metro Advisories for the Long Weekend
With the three-day weekend coming up—and perhaps some snow—the service advisory from Metrorail is a bit more promising than it has been in recent weeks. Only two of the system's five lines will be undergoing track work this weekend, and only on suburban stretches.
More Work on the Blue and Orange Lines This Weekend
Another weekend means another round of sometimes difficult-to-navigate Metrorail service advisories. Once again, sections of the Blue and Orange lines are going quiet for more track work and—in this instance—sludge removal.
Cracked Rail Causes Blue/Orange Line Delays
A cracked rail at the Rosslyn Metro station is causing delays on the Orange and Blue lines today.
Orange and Blue Lines Shut Down After Brake Breaks
Metrorail's Orange and Blue lines are currently suspended between Metro Center and Federal Center SW after an incident earlier this morning in which a piece of a Vienna-bound Orange train came loose and made contact with the third rail at the Smithsonian station, a Metro spokesman says.
Power Outages Caused Morning Metro Issues
Metrorail service was disrupted early this morning after electrical power to substations along the Orange and Blue lines was interrupted.
Man Who Was Hit By Orange Line Train Last Week Dies
The 39-year-old McLean resident who was struck by a train at the Clarendon station on October 11 has now died, Metro officials have confirmed.
Man Struck By Orange Line Train Last Night Still Alive
According to WMATA, the individual who was struck by a train at the Clarendon Metro station last night -- causing a huge rush hour disruption -- is still alive.
Orange Line Service Disrupted After Person Struck By Train
UPDATE (6:10 p.m.): We've now gotten word that the person who was struck by the train has been removed from the track, and people on the powerless train will soon be allowed to disembark. The Clarendon station could be closed for some time, however, so we'd definitely recommend either waiting it out, grabbing a cab, or any solution that does not involve expecting Orange Line service to be operating past Court House with any regularity for a little while.
All You Need To Know About This Weekend's Metro Service
Sometimes, it's far easier to portray these things with maps.
Four D.C. Metro Station Names Could Change
Greater Greater Washington writes that the D.C. Department of Transportation has asked Metro to change the names of four Metro stations within city limits.
Metro Labor Day Track Work: Your Turn, Northern Virginia
Are you a Virginia resident sticking around town this weekend? Well, better prepare yourself for some Blue and Orange Line delays -- WMATA is preparing to conduct what they're dubbing "major" track work along stretches of both over the three-day weekend.
Reminder: Metro To Close Four Orange/Blue Stations This Weekend
We've tried to remind you over the course of the last month, but as one final, last-minute notice: WMATA will not be operating Blue and Orange Line service between the Federal Center SW and Minnesota Avenue and Benning Road Metrorail stations this weekend.
Blue/Orange Line Service To Be Affected Over Memorial Day Weekend
It's actually been a relatively quiet couple of weeks on the Metro maintenance front -- for example, this upcoming weekend's slate is about as non-intrusive as Metro weekend maintenance gets these days -- but it's really just the calm before the next big Orange and Blue Line storm, which will arrive over Memorial Day weekend.
No Orange Line Service Between Stadium-Armory and New Carrollton This Weekend
This weekend, Orange Line riders are in for yet another headache, as Metro will halt all service between Stadium-Armory and New Carrollton to perform major maintenance work.
Massive Disruption On Orange, Blue Lines Begins Tonight
Don't forget: Metro will be closing five Orange Line stations and cutting off Blue Line service between Stadium-Armory and Benning Road beginning at 10 p.m. tonight. If you usually take either line to get between the District and Prince George's County, be sure to head out early tonight -- if you don't, you'll probably be stuck waiting for a Metro shuttle bus to come around.
Metro To Close Five Orange Line Stations From March 4-6
It isn't part of the transit agency's Year of Three-Day Weekend Closures, but it'll still be a real pain for many local residents: Metro announced this morning that service between Stadium-Armory and New Carrollton on the Orange Line and between Stadium-Armory and Benning Road on the Blue Line will be shut down during the first weekend in March.
What To Expect From Metro During Presidents Day Weekend
We've been talking quite a bit about other WMATA-related stories of late, but we wanted to make sure that you haven't forgotten about Metro's Year of Three-Day Weekend Closures, the next round of which is slated for this upcoming weekend. Both the Federal Triangle and Smithsonian stations will be closed for the entirety of Presidents Day weekend, between 10 p.m. on February 18 and closing on February 21.
More Metro Violence Captured On Video
Another disturbing video of physical violence on Metro property has surfaced and is beginning to make the rounds. First posted by anonymous watchdog blog Unsuck DC Metro, the video depicts a fight between two young men which broke out on an Orange Line train while it was in motion.
Major Delays On Orange, Blue Lines This Morning
What a terrible morning for Blue and Orange Line riders: service on both lines between Foggy Bottom and Federal Triangle was shut down due to a switch malfunction for about 20 minutes this morning. The two lines were split into two sections, though we're now told that the split is no longer in effect and trains are running on a normal schedule. Meanwhile, DCist reader Emily St. Martin sent in this image of the small fire which broke out at Metro Center this morning -- there was some confusion about whether the station was closed or open, but the issue involving the fire appears to be cleared up, too. (For what it's worth, Metro called both of those delays "dire.")
Metro This Weekend: Beware The Orange and Blue Lines
Is everyone ready for another weekend of pure Metro frustration? (After all, it's been so long since the last one!) Well, get ready: this weekend's maintenance schedule is pretty wicked. As a reminder, Metro's online TripPlanner doesn't feature any of this information, so you should check out this webpage before you head out this weekend.
This Weekend's Blue and Orange Line Track Work Canceled
Washingtonians were preparing for a second straight weekend of long waits between Metro trains on the Orange, Blue and Red Lines, but Metro announced this morning that they were canceling the weekend's planned track work on the Orange and Blue Lines. Riders "should expect normal service along both lines this weekend," according to WMATA's press release. The Blue and Orange Line work -- a switch replacement at the Rosslyn station, one of the more time-consuming pieces of maintenance Metro undertakes -- will be rescheduled for a later time. There's no word on the reason for the postponement, but it should somewhat alleviate at least some of the frustration that two straight weekends with sizable Metro waits can cause.
Weekend Track Maintenance to Affect Red, Orange Lines Again
Metro's scheduled weekend track maintenance, which includes ongoing track circuit repairs on the Red Line as a result of the June 22 crash, will continue to cause delays for Red and Orange Line riders this weekend.
Orange Line Trains Resume Normal Service
Metro says that Orange Line service in the area around the West Falls Church-VT/UVA station has returned to normal. At 11:18 a.m. this morning, a man was killed in an apparent suicide by a six-car Orange Line train heading in the direction of New Carrollton. Trains were single tracking through the station until approximately 2 p.m., but WMATA says the incident has now been cleared.
Super Fun Monday Morning Orange/Blue Line Delays!
Count yourselves lucky if you don't come into the city via the Orange or Blue lines through Rosslyn. Metro is reporting a train experiencing mechanical difficulties outside the Foggy Bottom station, causing Orange and Blue line trains to share the same track all the way between Clarendon and Farragut West. We're being told to expect delays in both directions as of 8:19 a.m., which, given the usual congestion in that area at this time of the morning, we can imagine will be pretty craptastic. Good luck out there, commuters.
Orange Line Victim Identified
Metro has released the name of the man who was fatally struck by an Orange Line train this weekend. WUSA-9 first reported the news that the victim was Kevin Deiss, 22, of Columbia, Md. Deiss died at the East Falls Church station at around 1:44 a.m. on Sunday. Metro Transit Police are reportedly awaiting toxicology reports on the deceased, and have previously stated they do not believe foul play was involved.
