Nationals Park: Now With Extra Vigilance?

Nationals Park: Now With Extra Vigilance?

After President Barack Obama announced the death of Osama bin Laden late Sunday night, it became all hands on deck time for authorities. The Metropolitan Police Department, the Metro Transit Police, Mayor Vince Gray and the Department of Homeland Security all kicked into high gear, upping vigilance, putting more cops on the city's trains and buses, and even reminding people to watch out for things like "threats from retaliating lone wolves" inside offices. So while experts admit that an attack there would be "unlikely," it's hardly a surprise that the District's youngest sports facility might get in on the security uptick. more ›

Today's Newspapers: Popular!

Thinking about picking up a newspaper this afternoon? Good luck. Despite producing an extra 35,000 copies, your chances of finding an edition of the Washington Post -- or any other newspaper, for that matter -- are probably slim to none at this point. (Don't worry, you'll be able to scour eBay for laughably overpriced copies very, very soon.) more ›

Shortly after news leaked that President Barack Obama was to announce the death of Osama bin Laden, several District residents -- many of them students from nearby George Washington University, taking a break from studying for their finals -- made their way to the White House to celebrate the news. The impromptu celebration turned into a massive gathering, drawing hundreds of others in a boisterous, sign-waving, lamppost-climbing, anthem-filled display of happiness. DCist staff photographer Jeff Martin was on the scene to capture the emotion on display. more ›

How Will You Commemorate Sept. 11?

How Will You Commemorate Sept. 11?

Just as a new videotape from Osama bin Laden was released over the weekend, tomorrow marks the sixth anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on New York and the Pentagon, and as in year's past, there will be events, speeches and vigils across the country to remember the dead. But with more time now between us and that tragic day, it does seem as though the way we want to honor the anniversary... more ›

Things Going By on a Foggy Foggy Night

Just a few days left before the hard-to-read national elections, the weather had its way setting an eerie, spooky tone for the Halloween weekend. Even Osama bin Laden made an unexpected appearance as the fog rolled in and became entrenched Friday night. But then if things couldn't get more peculiar, they did. Around 3:45 a.m., DCist was at Cafe Romeo's, a late-night pizza and sandwich place, located next to Holy Rood Cemetery on Wisconsin... more ›
