For you Oscar watchers at home, NPR follows up on a memorable Academy Award moment, when Hattie McDaniel won best supporting actress in 1939 for her role as Mammy in a little film called . Emotionally overcome during the ceremony, McDaniel told the Academy and Oscars watchers, "My heart is too full to tell you just how I feel." McDaniel maintains the recognition—but she didn't keep the award. Late in her life, she gave the plaque (back then, supporting actress winners got plaques) to Howard University. It wasn't was subsequently lost. Or stolen. Or destroyed. The how, when, and why remains a mystery.

For all his success outside of it, David Mamet has done all right by Hollywood. More than all right, in fact: His screenplays for The Verdict and Wag the Dog were nominated for Oscars, and, like Woody Allen, he gets to direct his own scripts just the way he wants to because 1) he’s got such unassailable artistic cred that everybody wants to work with him, and 2) he never spends very much money....

Bright and early this morning the 57th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards nominations were announced. Like the red-headed stepchild of the Oscars, the Emmys are a chance for Hollywood's lesser starlets and stars to participate in their own self congratulatory fest. ABC's campy but fun Desperate Housewives leads this year with 15 nominations. The 2005 RAMMYs aren't the only culinary awards on the horizon. The nominees for the 2005 James Beard Foundation awards were announced yesterday (.pdf). The awards are separated into three general segments, cookbooks, journalism, and restaurants and chefs. In the journalism segment, Todd Kliman of the City Paper (who most recently "reviewed" Perdu) was nominated for Best Newspaper Column for his weekly "Young and Hungry" feature. Tom Sietsema of the Post has been nominated for Best Newspaper Feature about Restaurants a number of times, but this is the first nomination for Kliman, who has been writing for the City Paper since late 2003.

The nominations for the Helen Hayes Awards were announced last night, despite the cancellation of the traditional reception at the Canadian Embassy. As today's Post notes, the nominations had their share of surprises.
