Occupy D.C. and the movement in general has been big news around the city and the world. You could debate its impact, and there are definitely a lot of people that strongly believe in it and others that decry it, but maybe something else will come of it. Like the plot for a lame romantic comedy.
Overheard in D.C.: Occupy Love
Overheard in D.C.: Branding
Branding has been a buzzword in the last few decades: you want people to think of something on your terms, not theirs. Perhaps the folks from Occupy D.C. could take a few pointers.
Overheard in D.C.: Takin' the Bus
You can say many things about Metrobuses. And now you can say one more thing. But hey, at least it's a good thing that Metro stations have bathrooms.
Overheard in D.C.: Dating
D.C. has two reputations when it comes to romance: there's lots of young people and lots of bars, but at the same time it's seen as a bad place for romance -- people are too focused on career, or they dress bad, or whatever. Or maybe there's another issue.
Overheard in D.C.: Metro
How about that Metrorail system? It goes wherever you want it to, except when there's single-tracking, you're on the Red Line, there's track work, it's rush hour, it's a holiday or you like using escalators. And maybe there's a reason for that.
Overheard in D.C.: Pot and Kettle
There's never-ending tension in D.C. between drivers, pedestrian, and cyclists. They each have their own rights, and they're always complaining about the others not behaving. In some cases, however, they're wrong.
Overheard in D.C.: Holiday Aww
With all the hubbub around the holidays, all the stress, family drama, stampedes at stores, long lines, returns, and the "war on Christmas," it's easy to forget the good stuff about this time of year.
Overheard in D.C.: Hectic Holiday Season
The holidays are near, which means running all over, shopping, picking up relatives, making food, traveling, general craziness. Even on Metrorail.
Overheard in D.C.: Cupcakes
For whatever reason, cupcakes have taken over. They're small, they're sweet, they're everywhere. There are reality shows about them and people stand in extremely long lines to get them. But maybe the trend has gone too far, if this is now how we measure things:
Overheard in D.C.: Bike Cops
People often complain about D.C. police officers -- they go to places to listen to the radio or talk, they don't obey some laws, and so on. And people often complain about cyclists not obeying laws. If you put bikes and cops together, is it a perfect storm?
Overheard in D.C.: A Trip to the Zoo
The Zoo is great. It's free, it's outdoors, it's educational. You see people of all ages and backgrounds learning and having fun.
Overheard in D.C.: It's All Very Confusing
We can accept that it is somewhat difficult for outsiders to wrap their minds around the District's unique situation with regard to autonomy, voting rights and the such. But the physical geography of the District?
Overheard in D.C.: Sexy Underwear
In the past decade or so, thongs have become the hot thing, subject of songs, controversies, and more. But not everybody is on board.
Overheard in D.C.: Brollaween
Halloween came and went, with tons of candy and every costume imaginable: sexy nurse, sexy cat, sexy devil, sexy Vince Gray. But for the guys, when sexy costumes aren't usually an option, you have to leave it to your imagination.
Overheard in D.C.: Not Exactly the West Wing
People say D.C. is Hollywood for nerds (or ugly people). Ideally, our fair city (and Capitol Hill) is full of smart people who get things done, advocate for what they believe in, and make a difference. But then you hear from the people who actually help make the decisions and write the laws.
Overheard in D.C.: Come Together
Despite all the talk of park conditions and people sleeping on the sidewalks, it appears that the Occupy movement is at least bringing some people together. And when that happens, the brutal honesty is never far behind.
Overheard in D.C.: The Joy of Children
Tourists season or not, kids are everywhere in town. The city is a great place to take kids, what with all the history, museums, statues and things to do. And there's always an opportunity to teach them about something.
Overheard in D.C.: The X2
Riding the bus in D.C. can be great. You go exactly where you want, pretty quickly. But it can also be annoying when no bus comes for 30 minutes, then four show up all bunched together. Then there can be fights, and crazy stuff sometimes happens. And for some reason, the X-2 is always the weirdest. (Or the best?)
Overheard in D.C.: Metro and the Dentist
There are some similarities between Metro and the dentist. You don't always want to go, but you need to or you'll have problems in the long term (like a root canal or getting fired). The chairs aren't particularly comfortable, and it can be painful. It's almost as hard to find a good train car as a good dentist. And, occasionally, they they offer similar encouragement.
Overheard in D.C.: Dreams Dashed
Capitol Hill is full of the best and brightest. It's all smart people getting stuff done, helping Americans, hobnobbing with brilliance and being clever. Right?
Overheard in D.C.: Father-Daughter Bonding
You may not have kids, but it's always nice to see dads and their daughters hanging out and bonding. Especially when it involves this.
Overheard in D.C.: D.C. vs. New York
There's been a lot said about D.C.'s cuisine versus New York City's. Bagels, pizza, whatever other thing they're better at because of water / people / history / whatever. Some guy called D.C. a second-tier food city, and whenever a New York chain comes here, everybody goes crazy for it. But we finally have some ammunition in this battle.
Overheard in D.C.: Rock You Like A Hurricane
Hurricane Irene came and went, and luckily didn't cause too much damage, as hurricanes go. But there were some lingering after-effects.
Overheard in D.C.: Back to School
While you were busy getting shook by an earthquake and stockpiling hurricane supplies (whiskey, gin), college in D.C. is getting underway. Youngsters are back in town, unloading their parents' SUVs, running around talking about how cool D.C. is and mobbing stores for school supplies. Among other things.
Overheard in D.C.: Dads and Kids
Kids can be annoying little jerks -- but sometimes they can also be unintentionally awesome.
Overheard in D.C.: Drugs
Drugs are bad, m'kay. Sometimes you get busted for them. Sometimes, you don't.
Overheard in D.C.: Setting Examples
Have you heard the news? 82 percent of the American public thinks Congress is doing a pretty terrible job right now. 82 percent! Of course, we have to wonder: what kind of an example is such political bickering setting for our young children?
Overheard in D.C.: Following Directions
Instructions: some of them are far easier to follow than others.
Overheard in D.C.: Cranky
Washington's kind of an uppity town in general -- what, with all the political ire and whatnot. But once you put our city under a dome of heat like the one that's currently encapsulating the District, well, that just pushes people to the breaking point.
Overheard in D.C.: Emergency Emergency
We all know Metro's got problems. That much is obvious. The important thing is that they admit it: after all, that's but the first step to recovery. Right?
