Caps Briefing: Playing for Keeps

It's not often in professional sports that the home team has the chance to keep the best player on the visiting team after the game, but that might be the case this afternoon if the Capitals can make the right impression on the Florida Panthers. Panthers defenseman Jay Bouwmeester is an emerging star. He plays defense well, passes the puck well and scores goals. All year, Florida has tried to secure a long-term contract to keep him in a Panthers uniform. But this week, the Panthers' general manager said he is actively considering trades for the All-Star.

Jose Theodore signed a two year, $9 million contract to play for the Capitals yesterday. Theodore brings a lot of great accomplishments and a lot of question marks to the Capitals. Last year in Colorado, he took turns losing the starting goalie job with younger disappointment Peter Budaj. Still, Theodore is the answer on paper to many of the Capitals' questions.

What with Paris Hilton's release earlier this week and the upcoming celebration of American Independence (sorry, Londonist!), we've been thinking a lot about freedom. Freedom to vote, freedom to choose, and most importantly, freedom to blog. Here are a few things we're happy we've been free to blog about this week. Being the nation's capital, DCist felt especially proud to let freedom ring this week by exposing the really important issues, like how sad they...

Good morning, Washington. Still can't get enough post-Pants Proceeding wrap-up? The Post's Henri E. Cauvin has a nice write-up and a video of the Chung family's press conference for you, conveniently located on A1. Still no word yet on whether Pearson will appeal yesterday's decision, but given the sheer volume of news stories published about this case all over the world, he can be sure whatever he decides to do from now on, people...

>> The region will be awash in crabs this summer. No, not that kind. Well, OK, maybe both kinds. [NBC4] >> D.C. Council member Marion Barry will be in court tomorrow for charges including driving under the influence and operating an unregistered vehicle. Holy smokes! Giant fish on the MTA, Paris Hilton in jail, then out, then in again, Al Gore, goatses, blumpkins, Matt Damon, and baby art critics! It's been a busy week across the Ist-A-Verse, and here's a smattering of what's been going on. In Gothamist's neck of the woods, they found out that many things are possible: A man caught a 40+ pound fish off the Rockaways and took it home on the subway. Graffiti...

The nicer the weather gets, the busier we get across the Ist-A-Verse. But we like being busy. Here's a peek at what we've been up to since last week! Chicagoist had an interview with Audrey Niffenegger, whose popular book, The Time Traveler's Wife, was based in their fine city. They also had a heated discussion about Rush Limbaugh's controversial Barack Obama parody, talked about whether Uncle Julio's Hacienda is a good place to get...

There's so much going on across the Ist-a-Verse that it's almost impossible to keep track these days. Fortunately, we do it so you don't have to! Londonist took a walk through Oliver Twist's London, thanks to a gorgeous map layer for Google Earth. They also caught up with modern-day fictional London, with the Fantastic Four and 28 Weeks Later. It was a week of insanity over at DCist. They started the week off with...

This week we'd like to congratulate the -ist network's Mother Hen, Gothamist's Jen Chung, who found herself a recipient of Wired Magazine's Wired Rave Award. If that doesn't sound terribly exciting, keep in mind another recipient was J.K. Rowling. Yep, that's right, the -ist network and Harry Potter now have something in common. Go us. Austinist has a chat with the ever-fashionable Golden Girl Rue McClanahan, and managed to catch some local fashionistas making...

While it might be a little premature to assume that we're definitely going to get a vote in Congress, the news from the Hill has caused us to spend the better part of the day pondering what the newfound freedom will feel like. And in our happy world, District residents will pour into the streets, embrace and break into spontaneous dance to the tune of "Dancin' in the Street" and "We Built this City."...

Happy Friday, Washington, and welcome to the newly redesigned DCist.com. Yes, our benevolent overlords in New York have been rolling out their new design city-by-city, and today it's our turn. We're still getting used to it ourselves, and of course we already know you'll give us your full and honest opinions in the comments. So go crazy — we're all halfway there already, and so is the weather forecast today. You might actually need that...

Yesterday, we received an e-mail that nearly fell to its death in the spam filter. Hidden among Nigerian flim-flam scams, phishing attempts, and advertisements for products purporting to be able to enlarge our manhood (this morning's: "Does 8 incches enough 4 U?") was a message advising us that DC Style magazine seemed to be holding a "10 Hottest Chefs in DC" competition.

If you don't like sweets and sparkling wine, you're a Communist. Well, you could be a diabetic-slash-recovering alcoholic, which is frankly the only understandable alternative explanation for not liking sweets and sparkling wine. For everyone else, Equinox's Todd and Ellen Gray are putting on their fourth annual Sugar and Champagne Affair on Wednesday night (Jan. 25) at the Ritz-Carlton at 22nd and M Streets NW. Benefiting the Washington Humane Society's Humane Law Enforcement Team (which,...

Browsing through our recent copy of People, DCist noted a brief article on Jonathan Cheban's trendy tees that the likes of Nicole Ritchie, Lindsey Lohan and Ms. Paris herself own. Cheban, a celeb-connected networker, has leveraged his connections into a high-profile PR career and recently partnered with notorious publicist Lizzie Grubman. Now, Gawker isn't overly fond of Cheban and the Post ran a rather lengthy piece highlighting his obsequious buzz techniques a few months back,...

We were pleasantly surprised when we were invited to the "soft" opening of Town Hall, a new restaurant in Glover Park at 2218 Wisconsin Avenue. The location is seen to the left earlier this summer, before the remodeling. Back in May we had written about the difficulty of the owners to secure an extension of their liquor license. After some carefully lobbying of the neighborhood ANC by the restaurateurs - and an increasingly vocal lobby in favor of the business organized through the neighborhood Yahoo Group - the ANC voted to temporarily extend the hours for a trial period.

The proposed closing hours for a new restaurant on Wisconsin Avenue in Glover Park has upset a few of the neighborhood's residents. A group of investors are currently remodeling the former location of Saveur Restaurant, 2218 Wisconsin Ave. (between W and Hall places), for a new "family-style" restaurant called Town Hall. (The image is from Saveur's Amazon listing) All was going smoothly for the group until some residents got wind the group was hoping to extend Saveur's liquor license from 11:30 until 2 a.m. on weekdays and 3 a.m. on weekends.

Well it's not exactly the FEC, but it looks like one local blogger is being chased by John Law. The Washington Socialite's Kelly Ann Collins has been served a cease and desist letter by Perkins Coie for publishing the hacked contents of Paris Hilton's now-infamous Sidekick. The letter claims that the materials are copyrighted and that Hilton has a "privacy interest" in the materials; the letter is most likely one of many arriving in various...

We hope you had a good weekend. Sunday's weather couldn't have been better, with temps in the 50s and clear skies. This photo was taken Sunday at sunset at the corner of Q and 33rd streets in Georgetown. >> Has the mini burger fad run its course, or does it still have some staying power? >> The franchise-infused Ellington, now with rotating spotlights, continues to shine light on whether the Duke is "rolling in...

Paris Hilton, who was in Washington before Thanksgiving, brought her "film crew and entourage" to SomaFit on Wisconsin Avenue and "commandeered" the "posh" gym, according to MSNBC’s Jeannette Walls. It was apparently for a reality television show, Paris had a pedicure and Walls' source says that the hotel heiress has big feet. Since Ms. Hilton was filmed sans "Simple Life" co-star Nicole Richie, perhaps Paris has a new reality show in the works. DCist speculates that...
