Nate Anda, who has specialized in pushing the envelope of the everyday protein, is currently readying to take the next leap: into the brick-and-mortar business. Red Apron's 709 D Street NW storefront should open in a few months, and it'll be, well, everything a meat-lover could possibly want.

Elisir Frees All Water
No one is complaining about the food at upscale Penn Quarter Italian restaurant Elisir -- it's the water that's the problem. The restaurant's owners, though, are scrambling to change that.
Iconic Central Liquors Sign Comes Down
UPDATE (12:25 p.m.): Via The Location, we learn that the sign has apparently been sold to James Alefantis, the owner of another business with a big neon sign, Comet Ping Pong. There's no word yet on what Alefantis' plans are for the sign, but we're looking forward to hearing them.
Douglas Development Buys Penn Quarter "Boozeum" Property
Last week, local development blog DCMud reported that local uber-developer Douglas Development had picked up the deed on the Equitable Building at 915 F Street NW for $5 million, half of what the previous owner paid for it. It's a property that we've been keeping an eye on for some time.
It's A Riot: Penn Quarter Gets New Comedy Club
D.C. expanded its humor options yesterday with the opening of Riot Act Comedy Theater in Penn Quarter. It's the District's second comedy club -- the first being DC Improv on Connecticut Avenue.
Walmart Protest Scheduled In Penn Quarter Today
A word to the wise for those who might be considering knocking off work a little bit early today and taking a trip to the Kogod Courtyard or to a matinee at Gallery Place: a pro-labor organization has planned a protest of Walmart at the company's lobbying office on 8th Street NW this afternoon.
7th Street in Penn Quarter Closed Due to Police Situation
UPDATE: Everything is all clear now, and 7th Street is back open to traffic and pedestrians.
Wagamama Again Confirms D.C. Location, Still Mum On Date
Since Wagamama's announced in 2008 that they'd be opening a Penn Quarter location, we've been waiting with anticipation. But at times over the past few months, plenty of conflicting information had us wondering if plans for the location might be abandoned. But today, we received confirmation that the company does intend to open a location at 418 7th Street NW later this year.
First Look: Hill Country Barbecue Market
Texas barbecue acolytes can now rejoice. This past Saturday, New York's Hill Country Barbecue Market opened in Penn Quarter. The restaurant smokes up barbecue modeled on that served at Kreuz Market in the Hill Country of Texas. And while some Texans might argue nothing will be quite the same as what they can get in Texas -- especially when it's being imported from New York -- Hill Country hews as close as possible to the real thing.
Report: Anthropologie Coming To Penn Quarter
Washington Business Journal has the news that Anthropologie, the trendy (and, in this editor's opinion, outrageously overpriced) clothier who has been negotiating for some time to try and get another store inside the District, will be the latest addition to Penn Quarter's burgeoning fashion district. The store will take a space owned by Douglas Development in the 950 F Street development in Penn Quarter -- those spaces have sat empty for around four years, so it's nice to finally see something going in there.
Fate Uncertain for F Street Central Liquors Sign
For the denizens of F Street, Penn Quarter and D.C., the Central Liquor sign was a lighthouse beacon for fine wines and liquors -- possibly leading to a debacherous good time. And over the years, the sign and store have become mainstays of the Penn Quarter area. But since Central Liquors owners Alec Akopov, Gregory Baiatyan and Valery Akopov moved their booze emporium from at 917 F Street east to 625 E Street, the final resting place for the blade sign has been up in the air.
Downtown Gifford's Ice Cream Hopes to Reopen in About Week
The downtown location of Gifford's Ice Cream (555 11th Street NW) hopes to reopen in about a week, following a temporary closure ordered by the D.C. Dept. of Health.
Anthony Bourdain in D.C. for 'No Reservations'
OK, he may not be Brad Pitt or George Clooney, but I'd bet $5 on Anthony Bourdain in a bare-knuckle boxing match. So, if you see him around town this weekend, filming segments for his Travel Channel show, No Reservations, best not tick him off.
Olsson's Filing for Bankruptcy
It was just a couple weeks ago that we told you about Olsson's plans to shutter its Penn Quarter location -- which it finally did, on Friday. In an email to customers, owner John Olsson had said that "The landlord has other plans for the space," and we confirmed that those plans were to bring in UK noodle shop Wagamama. But the Post reported on Saturday that it looks like there's a lot more to that story than Olsson originally admitted: Olsson's is filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
Last week, two of its biggest publishers, Random House and Penguin Group, as well as Hachette Book Group petitioned the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Greenbelt to place Olsson's in involuntary Chapter 7 bankruptcy, which would force the company to liquidate.more ›
Noodles vs. Books
http://dcist.com/2008/03/14/the_weekly_feed_36.php">British-owned ramen bar will be taking the space. Though it's a bit further south on 7th St., the spot is bound to butt heads with other casual high-end fast food joints like Chop't and the soon-to-be-opening Vapiano, as well as another British chain, Nando's.
Olsson's Penn Quarter Closing Down
Sad news for lovers of locally-owned bookstores: the Olsson's location in the Lansburgh building in Penn Quarter is shutting down. We had heard rumors this was in the works for a couple of weeks, especially after so many author events appeared to be moving to the Dupont Circle location. The email below was sent out to the Olsson's list on Monday.

Photo of the Day: December 18, 2007
Though perhaps the inclination when it starts to dip past the point of freezing is to stay inside with a blanket and a cup of something steaming, there are so many things to do and see outside -- whether it's the White House or Capitol Christmas trees or one of the many holiday fairs -- that it's almost a shame to spend all of December on your couch. Flickr user sintixerr caught this scene at the Downtown Holiday Market going on in Penn Quarter, going on every day from 12 to 8 p.m. until December 23. The dapper gentleman looking a bit out of place in the sea of causal shoppers in their puffy jackets gives this photo some amusing character. EXIF.

MONDAY: Cass R. Sunstein will be at Politics and Prose to discuss the book Worst-Case Scenarios. No, it's not one of those books that gives you tips on how to survive if you wake up next to someone whose name you don’t remember or how to retrieve a candy bar stuck in the lunchroom vending machine. It's actually about scary stuff, like nuclear bombs in suitcases or avian flu. We prefer learning how to jump...
