Nowak to Leave D.C. United

Pending an official announcement (currently broadcast live at United's web site), D.C. United coach Peter Nowak is leaving the team to become the U.S. men's national team assistant coach. United is expected to name Tom Soehn as their new coach. The transition shouldn't be too difficult for the team, as Soehn has been Nowak's right hand man on the bench for the last three years. Nowak's departure doesn't come as a complete surprise. His name... more ›

United Can't Overcome Early Deficit, Lose To Fire

United Can't Overcome Early Deficit, Lose To Fire

D.C. United's defense let them down once again on Sunday as the Chicago Fire sprinted to a 2-0 lead in the first half and held on for a 3-2 win in front of 18,652 fans at RFK Stadium. United has now lost three in a row and have but one victory in their last seven matches, not the kind of playoff tune-up coach Peter Nowak wanted. As bad as it was, it could have... more ›

United Tripped Up By Revolution

United Tripped Up By Revolution

D.C. United came into Saturday night's game both optimistically and urgently. An animated crowd of 21,022 cheered enthusiastically as United was presented with the Supporter's Shield. The match at hand would provide them with a quality opponent, the New England Revolution, indicative of the competition they would confront in the rapidly-approaching MLS Cup playoffs. Such a stage would seem the perfect situation to right the ship and make a bold statement before entering the... more ›

United Cook Up A Draw

United Cook Up A Draw

Faced with a depleted squad due to suspensions and injury, D.C. United Coach Peter Nowak had a dilemma on his hands, one that should be familiar to most college undergrads (at least most that I knew): It's dinner time, and you're hungry, but your dickhead roommates ate most of the good stuff. The hot pockets? Gone. The bread? Moldy. That Greek seasoning stuff that you put on everything? Spilled in some late-night culinary escapade.... more ›

Bittersweet Week For United

Bittersweet Week For United

For D.C. United, the events that transpired in the last week confirmed two unalienable truths. Contrary to United's play during their prolonged slump, they are, in fact, a very good team. And despite a run of good form in U.S. Open Cup play, there's something about the 92-year-old competition that gives D.C. fits. Last Sunday, United snapped its miserable 5 game winless streak with a 2-1 win over Chivas USA. The win gave United... more ›

DC United Host LA Galaxy Saturday Night

DC United Host LA Galaxy Saturday Night

Fresh off of their victory Wednesday night over the New York Red Bulls, MLS leading DC United hope to continue their winning ways Saturday night when they host the LA Galaxy. While the Galaxy's 7-11-5 record may not sound too enticing there are plenty of subplots in Saturday's game that bear watching. Recently departed Santino Quaranta, traded from DC to LA for a future draft pick, will be making his return to RFK. He's... more ›

United Send Red Bulls Packing

United Send Red Bulls Packing

Mired in a 4-game winless slump and experiencing an offensive drought, DC United headed into last night's match against Red Bull New York with a degree of uncertainty. Would United's forwards be able to capitalize on the scoring chances that had slipped by them in past games? Could the team regain its competitive edge? Was it time for another early exit from U.S. Open Cup play? United provided an emphatic answer to these questions,... more ›

United Look To Build On Success

United Look To Build On Success

Written by DCist contributor Matt Bourque. With four MLS Cups under their belts, DC United can accurately claim to be the most successful franchise in the league's ten year history. Behind such legends as Marco Etcheverry, John Harkes, Raul Diaz Arce, and Roy Lassiter, DC United has procured the reputation as the team to beat in American soccer. After a disappointing first round exit from last season's playoffs, DC United is off to a blistering... more ›

Freddy Adu Acts His Age?

Freddy Adu Acts His Age?

Ah, the brashness of youth. Yesterday 16-year-old Freddy Adu went on a tirade of sorts, complaining about the amount of playing time he's recieved this year and even (gasp) contemplating playing elsewhere next year. "I got [MLS] player of the week, and the next week I'm sitting on the bench," Adu told the Post. "I'm like, 'What is going on here?' It's frustrating at times when you think you've earned a chance to play on the field and you're over there sitting on the bench." Keep in mind DC United open their playoff schedule on Friday in Chicago against the Fire. more ›

Chelsea FC bests DC United in Clash of Champions

Chelsea FC bests DC United in Clash of Champions

Going into last night’s match against Chelsea FC, there were few, outside of the diehards, who thought much of DC United’s chances. Chelsea had, after all, blown through the Premiership the year before, allowing only 15 goals and winning all but one match, proving themselves to be the class of their league. DC came in with the equivalent MLS bragging rights, but as they were mired in the middle of the standings and without last... more ›

United's Road Woes Continue in Chicago

United's Road Woes Continue in Chicago

A week and a half after coming from behind to beat the Chicago Fire at home, the DC United fell short of duplicating that feat in Chicago. Despite a long period off, a recent return to winning form and the breaking of their road-scoring curse, DC fell 4-3 in the Windy City last night. “We gave away the first half,” said United coach Peter Nowak. Chicago’s Nate Jaqua traded early goals with Christian Gomez,... more ›

>> Wins on Friday against the free falling Cleveland Cavaliers and on Sunday against the Charlotte Bobcats coupled with an Indiana Pacers loss at Miami have moved the Wizards into 5th place in the Eastern Conference playoff race with just two games to go. United Wins MLS Cup, GW Falls, Brunell Benched

>> DC United scored three goals in a seven minute span to vanquish Kansas City and bring the MLS Cup back to D.C. for the first time since 1999. Former University of Virginia star Alecko Eskandarian scored two of United's goals, while Earnie Stewart added another. United has been in the MLS Championship game five times in 9 years with their only loss coming to Chicago in 1998, a team which included current United head... more ›
