Major Prostitution Bust in Petworth Nets 12 Arrests

While I was perusing weekend arrest digests from the District's police listservs last night, I noticed that there had been a uncommonly large number of arrests on prostitution charges in Petworth on Saturday night. 12 people were arrested and charged with solicitation around the intersection of Georgia Avenue and Taylor Street NW between 9:09 and 11:57 p.m. that evening. It's an area that, according to Lieutenant John R. Haines of the Fourth District Vice Unit, police have had their eyes on for some time. "In a very short time, we were able to identify and arrest several female suspects in the area and charge them with prostitution-related offenses," said Haines in an email explaining the bust to the MPD-4D listserv. "Then, we deployed several undercover officers (female), posing as potential prostitutes in order to target the 'Johns'. Over the next several hours, we were able to arrest several subjects and charge them with prostitution-related offenses as well." Haines called the sting "very effective" -- with 12 arrests made in a little over four hours, its hard to argue with that assessment. more ›

Fireworks: Not Meant For Confined Spaces

Let this be a lesson to you: narrow alleyways in Petworth are probably not the best place to be shooting off explosives. I mean, unless you like shrapnel in the eye. It wouldn't be summer time if there wasn't video proof that fireworks are crazy and those who set them off are kind of nuts, now would it? Thanks to an anonymous Petworthian for the terrifyingly hilarious footage. more ›

Pet Worth: This Month's Highly Adoptable Animals

             + 5 more

Last month, we launched our first collaboration with the Washington Humane Society and highlighted a handful of dogs that needed to find a home. The WHS's goal to "increase adoption, decrease the number of animals in need, and teach responsible pet ownership" is one that we truly believe in, and we're happy to report that two of the dogs we featured in October, Tancho and Nina, found homes!! Nina's new owner saw our photos and knew that she was the right dog for their family. She now lives with a family of five, two young children, two adults and another pit bull who is Nina's new best friend. Sumi, the beautiful and smart Akita mix is still at the shelter waiting to be sprung. Kate was diagnosed with heart worms and has been moved to the Washington Animal Rescue League to recover. She will be up for adoption again once she gets better. more ›

Petworth and Columbia Heights Organic Grocery Update

There's a few things happening in the world of organic grocery stores lately, with some good news for Petworth folks and not-so-good news for Columbia Heights residents. First the good: the Yes! Organic Market at 4100 Georgia Avenue NW officially opens today at 3 p.m. Wednesday at 10 a.m. As for the bad, over the past few weeks some passersby have reported construction work being done in the space that Ellwood Thompson's organic supermarket is renting in the DCUSA complex at 14th and Irving. You'll recall that back in April the Richmond-based grocer announced the opening of their first D.C. store was delayed indefinitely due to the economy. Of the recent visible work inside the space, Ellwood Thompson spokesperson Cyndi Watkins had this to say: "As of right now I have not heard anything new about us moving to D.C. Any construction being done must be work the landlord is doing." UPDATE: Looks like Ward 4 Council member Muriel Bowser's office jumped the gun on announcing the Petworth opening. A spokesperson for Yes! Organic Market now tells us that the store will be opening for the first time at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, August 19, with the ceremonial ribbon cutting pushed back to Thursday, August 27. Both Bowser and Mayor Adrian Fenty are expected to be in attendance on August 27. more ›
