It would be otterly devastating if you didn't understand why this image from guy_incognito is our Photo of the Day.

The light and shadows in this composition by andradeXcobain, along with the strong contrast and subject, make for a visually solid photograph.

The demonic eyes of these roof-dwelling felines may be explained away by on-camera flash. But I'd watch your back if I were you.

Dogs all over the region are hoping for a snow day so they can wear their winter sweaters, just like this sweet pink and white stripey one melissa.suzanne's dog wore recently while on a hike in Great Falls. The smooth selective focus and dim lighting suggest a slightly sinister encounter on that lonely path, so it's a good thing she has her dog to ward off any Snow Monsters.

Is that Harry Lime lurking around Freedom Plaza? andradeXcobain frames his anonymous subject in perfect balance with the available light and shadow, creating a classic film noir feel.

The title of this image indicates that this photo was taken on 14th Street, which can only lead us to ask, what on earth is happening here? Did Atreyu get his horse out of the Swamp of Sadness and bring it to D.C.? Does this woman think she is Princess Buttercup? If we learned anything from the Super Bowl, the only person who should be walking around in his boxer briefs is David Beckham, so where are that man's pants? We may never know, but thanks to Senor Sideburns for taking the photo.

The color scheme is All-American, the subject mundane, the composition by lovedc exquisite.

Happy February! This is not the time of year one is used to seeing the Madison Livelystones perform an open-air concert, but this week's taste of spring may be enough to bring on the music. Friend of DCist furcafe took the snap.

It is rare to see an image from Yospyn in the DCist pool these days, but it is so delightful when they pop up. As a long time contributor to our Flickr pool, and frequent Photo of the Day photographer going as far back as 2007 (!), he is one of many of our contributors who have turned their passion for photographyinto a career. Watching this transformation make us very happy, and proud. It is also a reminder that being part of our Flickr community can be the start of some wonderful things!

This intense portrait comes from maria jpeg, who captured a lot within this tight composition.

It's an ordinary gas station at the edge of Georgetown. But with expired film and the lens of a beat-up Kodak Instamatic, Néstor Sánchez Cordero makes it look like it's not long for this world. KInd of like the company behind the camera.

It doesn't matter that we can't see what they're watching. Vileinist's moody shot tells its story through the hypnotized faces of the kids and the rather sinister shadows behind them.

The contrasts in this image by csuspect are quite nice. The white wall is a visual contrast for this woman, her dark coat, and the shadows. The additional contrast is the woman's apparent loneliness while surrounded by the shadows of other people. The layers of this photograph are what make it work.

"Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds." Godspeed to this little mail carrier. Godspeed.

A simple thing like rain on glass can transform a banal view into a gorgeous abstraction. Thanks to @helylovedc, who captured the show.

The sun streaming into the cavernous National Building Museum, the repeating patterns, and the high contrast black and white treatment gives this photo a great feel. His Noodly Appendage makes you want to peer into the darkness. (EXIF)

While it isn't quite so frigid right now, philliefan99 yesterday managed to capture this breathtaking, wintry close-up.

No one wants to be caught in the rain unprepared, and Pablo.raw shows us that this little guy is no exception. He may not be able to hold an umbrella, but that does not stop him from being stylish in a classic yellow rain coat.

The shopping cart in and of itself isn't all that remarkable, but Andrew-Benson's photograph, composed of pattern, color and light, gives a new perspective on this mundane object.

Last night's rain made for a rough commute. But it also provided us with the kind of reflections, captured here by Coffo, that can turn an ordinary subway ride into a beautiful light show.

Slow shutter and the use of a decidedly lo-fi app on an iPhone can create some interesting effects. Take this photo by Joe in DC, which manages to make DC cabs look dreamy.

Yes, it's another un-bear-ably cute animal photo for your enjoyment.

Every once in a while, we get to see a metro shot unlike any other we have seen. This image from fdmount is just that type of photo. The beautiful golden hues of the sun create a nice silhouette with the metro passengers, creating a very lovely image.

Congratulations! We've made it through the first week of the new year. You deserve a picture of an adorable puppy, er dog.

This office scene was made at the end of a warm holiday weekend, but the suggested drudgery more than applies to those who returned to work in the cold this week. Photographer applesanity made this image with a classic Hasselblad on Kodak Tri-X film. Alas, it's a sad week for local photographers. On top of news that longtime area chain Penn Camera has declared bakruptcy, Kodak is preparing for Chapter 11 as well.
Photo of the Day: January 4, 2012
Seventeen degree days call for desperate measures to keep warm, but wrapping yourself in lights probably isn't the best way to do it. applesanity's picture documents the attempt, or it could just be a pretty picture. (EXIF)

Everyone knows that District residents are suckers for pictures of baby animals. But as Flickr user spiggycat captured recently, those baby animals grow up. Here, some of the National Zoo's brood of seven lion cubs -- they turned one in September -- stare intently at something just out of frame.

Some days selecting the Photo of the Day is as easy as taking a pill. At least when Matt.Dunn captures the decision making process.
