The turkeys are coming, the turkeys are coming! Or fleeing, as is the case here. Synapped reminds us that our upcoming feast isn't great news for the turkeys.

Be prepared for the DCist Flickr Pool to be infiltrated by an invading army. These Terra Cotta Warriors have started their advance at National Geographic and scouts have already been spotted in the Pool, like this one by erin m. EXIF.
This photo from Command Z was made using a color flash holga. The different layers of color are a happy contrast to the confused faces of the dogs. We love the result.
It's hard to believe, especially on a day like today, that gray can be anything but cold and dreary. Flickr user Karon brings us this painterly photograph that shows how gray can be equally mysterious and dynamic. EXIF.
Sometimes it's the most simple photograph that catches your eye and steals your attention. This photo from every.seven is exactly that: simply beautiful.
Technology is amazing; that a simple camera phone can capture such an image. And with jim_darling's keen eye and knack for color and composition, you get one gorgeous photograph.
Staceyviera's photo Creepy Grin is just that, creepy. The man in the foreground seems to have no idea that he is being watched. The painting above the grin, of a hairy man in his boxers sleeping while his clock is doing some bizarre smiling dance, adds to the weirdness of the scene.
If you looked at this photo and thought, "What in the world?" or, "Is this even from this world?" you are not alone. This long exposure from discipula277 is of the DDP Drill Team, an avant garde dance performance group. The DDP is, according to their web site, short for "Dieter's Dance Party," a name borrowed from the Saturday Night Live Sprockets skit made famous by Mike Myers. And yes, it does appear that the dancers are carrying a Star Wars-themed light saber/drill team stick. The dancers are clearly fantastical, in their makeup, uniforms, and choreographed dance moves, and the photo captures their essence perfectly. I think this sci-fi military image is exactly the feel the DDP was trying to achieve.
Halloween isn't just pumpkins and candy corn. There's a darker side to the holiday and many things that go bump in the night. Marcelina. brings a bit of light to one of those things for this creepy Halloween eve photo.
The DCist flickr pool is full of great outdoor shots from this past weekend. Between the Marine Corps Marathon, the bright fall leaves, and some spectacular sunsets it is obvious that our contributing photographers were out enjoying the great fall weather. This image from the Perry Belmont Mansion by lightboxdc caught my eye because of the great use of the light. The strip of orange sun, contrasting with the deep blue sky, in a composition that makes good use of lines and shapes makes this shot worth highlighting.
This fuzzy caterpillar is on the move. No time for tea or other such pleasantries. He didn't even stop to say hello to nevermindtheend, who documented his intrepid journey.
Sanjay Suchak has made, with this photograph, an image that could launch a thousand stories. There are many compositional elements that are great, like the stopped and blurred motion balancing out the frame, and the lines of the bench tying all of the characters together. But, it is the fun of trying to determine what on earth those people are talking about, and their bizarre dynamic, that makes this photo special. The crossed legs, the way they are all holding a cigarette with an outstretched left arm, how the couple on the left seem as if whatever the woman on the right is saying is about as interesting as US tax code, and the anonymous, Tour de France suited bicyclist speeding through Dupont Circle, could all be the spark for a story. Or, at least a cool caption contest.
Is there an invisible chess player in this photo? And if so, why is he standing? And where did he find invisible chess pieces? Photographer furcafe leaves us with many unanswered questions with this found object in Adams Morgan.
As the week draws to a close, and the gray skies seem to be here to stay, we wanted to offer you a little bit of calm, quiet reflection to help smooth the way into your weekend. And Flickr user LaTur gets us in the right frame of mind with this photograph from the Swedish Embassy. EXIF.
Digital meets analog in this shot of Union Station (reflected in the glass façade of the Thurgood Marshall Federal Judiciary Center). Flickr contributor lorigoldberg got herself a lens adapter that lets her use the plastic lenses from a Diana on her digital SLR, finally giving digital that je ne sais quoi that makes us love all those plastic camera shots. (EXIF)
The ongoing Maryland Renaissance Festival is always a good spot to create intriguing photographic portraits, especially when yospyn is behind the lens. Perhaps it's the anachronisms in his depiction of Elizabeth that make this shot irresistible.
Today's photo of the day from Maxedaperture drew us in with the well framed lines, and strategically placed subject matter. This man could have been happily reading a Dr. Seuss book for all we know, but the exit-less, structured composition spurs feelings of entrapment and foreboding. The coffee shop setting and seemingly forlorn central character reminds us of the painting Nighthawks by Edward Hopper.
Ingredients: County fair, carnival ride, people having fun, blue skies, plastic camera, and film. Directions: mix thoroughly until results capture giddiness of being there. Post to the DCist pool. Profit!
"Look up," is the best bit of advice I give to budding photographers. There's sky and clouds, buildings and trees, and that fantastic twilight blue. That's exactly what Hoffmann did, setting up a 79 second exposure to capture the sky and stars. Who knew you could see so many stars in an urban environment? (DCist Heather did, actually) Get out there this evening and start snapping, and don't forget to put your best shots in the DCist pool. (EXIF)
Is there a new trend in the city that we should be worried about? Has spiggycat found proof that all types of dolls are taking up arms in the city? At least this marionette seems old enough to carry a weapon.
Flickr user *tinadelarosa has us thinking about eggplant parmigiana, or a hearty rattatouille. These eggplants look delicious. Thank goodness it's lunch time. EXIF.
Whether your Metro ride is delayed or not, you've often got time to kill while you go from place to place. DCist Flickr Pool contributor yonas1 snapped this shot of one particularly contemplative red line rider. What do you do on your commute? (EXIF)
This photo from a nameless yeast, titled "in the neighborhood", forces us to wonder: when the baby dolls finally come for you, will you be ready?
Fall is finally upon us, not that you'd know it from the humid week we've had. But of course the beginning of fall always brings with it that nice hint of orange color, captured very brightly by markjstephenson. What's your favorite seasonal food or drink?
An abandoned insane asylum, a deteriorating building, a Kimball console piano in a distressed state, an old style radiator, paint chips on the floor, and some great light make for a great picture by Flickr contributer Marcellina. For more stark urban pictures, check out Urbex, the urban exploration group.
We have seen many great portraits in the DCist Flickr pool in the last few months, and this photo titled Chase 02 by Yospyn is among our favorites. The child's ambivalent expression and pose, combined with a coordinating Spider-Man red balloon hat that screams "Wooohooo Party!" is an amazing contrast. Yospyn has given us the portrait equivalent of a mullet: business in the pose, party in the hat.
With a touch of fall in the air, this summertime DJ by maxedaperture let's us hold onto the season for just a little bit longer and keep the pumpkins and Indian corn at bay.
If you take away the modern earbud headphones, Flickr userlorigoldberg's photo, titled High Top Fade, is straight out of 1988. There are plenty of not so great '80s trends being sported these days, but the high top fade is one that we fully support. There were many notable folks with this hairstyle before this young man's time...Kid 'N Play, Bobby Brown, Grace Jones, Theo Huxtable, Scotty Pippen, Vanilla Ice, Arsenio Hall, my little brother ... all with their own unique versions. And with this image taken on film, it only adds to the nostalgia. We hope he's listening to some Bel Biv DeVoe.
Michael Starghill reminds us that the Redskins are not the only football action in town. His field side photo of Coolidge Colts players during their Friday match up with the Ballou Knights puts us in the center of the game. According to Starghill's blog, the two D.C. teams had a very close, and emotion filled, game which resulted in Coolidge inching out a win over Ballou. Now if only the Redskins could be that interesting on the field.
Sunday saw the running of the annual Nation's Triathlon. Flickr contributor Brian Knight Photography was up early to capture this stunning sunrise at the Lincoln Memorial as the athletes swam in the Potomac. Congratulations to all who swam, biked, and ran in the triathlon! (EXIF)
