Flickr user LaTur shot an-otherwise mundane coffee shop scene and made it spectacular by capturing the afternoon light. The composition draws emphasis to the tiled floor. We love the yellow tones and long shadows that stretch across the vast white space of the floor. EXIF.......

The Revolution March over the weekend was billed as a "peaceful, non-violent march," and Flickr user afagan captures this Capitol Police officer on the hunt for potential rabble-rowsers. What has he spotted amidst the sea of demonstrators? More importantly, what's the over/under on the time it will take to ready the heavy artillery casually strewn along the ledge? EXIF.......

Okay, so this is the second "under bridge" PotD this week, but this image by Flickr user volcanojw was too good to pass up. The architecture of the Wilson Bridge creates bold lines as the construction crew works underneath. She took a landscape version that emphasizes the great curves of the pillars, but I like this one for its strong path to a vanishing point.......

Sometimes it's hard to resist a good flower shot. Especially when it's brilliantly make-you-smile yellow that includes a drunk bee rolling around in his private cup o' pollen. Flickr user jbhaber caught this guy before he flew off to make our city a more colorful place (and to be honest, we just like checking up on them now and again.) EXIF.......

Flickr user Kevin H. contributed this fantastic shot of the 14th Street Bridge's steely underbelly, full of geometric goodness. It's a reminder in drabby green and grey that even the most everyday of objects have a innate complexity underneath. EXIF.......

Tim Russert's unexpected death touched many of us here in Washington. Flickr user Mr. T in DC captured this reverent shot of Russert's final resting place in Rock Creek Cemetery. The temporary marker and wilted flowers are small and inconsequential in comparison to the media giant's life. EXIF.......

How many stories can be told in a single photo? Amidst the excitement of projectiles colorfully exploding in the sky, Flickr user dullshick captures a crowd congregated behind a fence along 13th Street NW taking in the firework festivities. Despite the graininess of the photo, the bare light provided by the traffic signals illuminates both the facial expressions and body language of the assembled crowd. EXIF.......

Did anyone catch the Boris show on the main stage of the Black Cat last night? From the looks of this photo by flickr contributor brandonwu, it was quite an experience. The Black Cat promised this band from Japan would be "rocking us like a hurricane" with Boris as "the eye of the storm." Seems a bit extreme, but after looking at this winning photo, shot at ISO 6400 with an 18-70 lens, that......

I think everyone who contributes to the DCist Flickr pool knows mosley.brian put this shot in there just for me. He took this realistic looking shot of the Discovery space shuttle model that was out for display during the Smithsonian Folk Life festival. I'm a little bummed I never made it down there to talk with the rocket scientists. What did you all think of this year's festival? And is anyone else planning a......

Thought you'd see a photograph involving fireworks, eh? Well, you can never accuse us of being predictable. (OK, OK, so we splurged and did a whole gallery full of them instead.) For Photo of the Day, we're indulging in a bit of solitude and quiet this Monday morning. Flickr user Alex Barth brings us this shot of H Street NE in the quiet of the night -- it's something special to make one of......

it was 232 years ago today / Tommy Jeff, he taught the band to play . . . Flickr user Brandon-J asks: What could possibly be more patriotic than Declaration author Thomas Jefferson at a (sparsely attended) Washingon Nationals game? And what're the odds he's packing heat under that red coat maroon frock? Happy birthday, America! EXIF.......

Flickr user annascialli catches an early Fort Reno arrival either preparing to groove to Monday's Bellman Barker show or trying to count the non-harmful 12.3 parts per million of arsenic in the Fort Reno soil. Check the soil for yourself tonight as Perfect Souvenir, The Andalusians, and The Makeshift Shakedown take the stage. EXIF.......

"What a whimsical shot of someone's unmentionables!," says commenter (and yesterday's PotD winner) c00lmarie about this shot. Flickr user Hoffmann found these colorful undies hanging from a line at last weekend's Crafty Bastards fair at Pyramid Atlantic in Silver Spring and made it into a little downhome slice of Americana, set off against the gorgeous blue sky. And also reminds me, I need to stop at Target on my way home for some laundry......

There's a slight chance of showers in today's forecast. But hopefully, it won't be anything like the downpour that Flickr user c00lmarie caught on Saturday. This Frank Miller-esque shot was enough to get us to neurotically obsess about whether or not to tote an umbrella this morning. EXIF.......

Sorry, Flickr users, today's Photo of the Day comes from a local whose achievement in the field of biological, if not photographic, excellence dusts all y'all suckers. This is an ultrasound image belonging to friend of mine. It is not a joke; it is not a fake, and yes, of course I obtained her permission to post it here with the quite understandable proviso that I remove her name from it. Those of you......

Today's photo of some passing traffic "across from the gallery" is brought to you by mzv with one of my favorite cameras, the Holga. It's the kind of camera that you never quite know what you're going to get when you take the image, and made of pretty much all plastic -- you can get them pretty cheap.......

It seems that yesterday's double rainbow was even more popular with our Flickr contributors than last week's double rainbow. But today's photo of Thomas Circle by Flickr contributor lehnermd gives us this great color (and the assurance that no enhancements have been done to this photo). EXIF......

Flickr user mosley.brian had several strong contenders for today's PotD (especially this one and this one), but we're going with his "Well Placed Duck" because despite the durability of the simile "like water off a duck's back," these wily waterfowl just don't get the credit they deserve for their casual, unrelenting badassitude. Gaze at this fella and rest assured, Kimosabe, that like the abyss, he's gazing right back into you. EXIF.......

If you were not lucky enough to see the wonderful rainbow(s) yesterday, have no fear Flickr contributor brandonwu managed to get this fantastic shot from the artomatic building. It also seems like a few other DC photographers had their cameras with them too. Check out the pool for even more rainbow photos. EXIF......

Oh, snap. cstein96 reminds us all that bathing suit season has arrived. If you haven't yet shed those winter pounds and ounces, you better grab an extra t-shirt on the way to the beaches and swimming pools. And while you're at it, stear clear of Q Street as well, because there is a weight limit in effect. Ouch. EXIF.......

Flickr user andertho gives us this very moody image of the air force memorial close up. While it's being debated on his page if the sky is real, I'm going to have to say with the weather that the District has been having as of late that this is indeed a real sky. EXIF......

Friday the 13th is day when everything goes all rubbery. Flickr user spinfly shows us this building on the Georgetown waterfront -- one that's never leaped out at us as being particularly arresting -- in a way that makes it look like an H.R. Giger-designed spaceship.EXIF.......
