Travel Channel's Food Wars Takes on D.C.'s Jumbo Slice

The quality of a jumbo slice is something that most Washingtonians know is best left to be pondered after a night of heavy boozing. So we're a little surprised that the Travel Channel show Food Wars is pitting two local purveyors, Pizza Mart and Jumbo Slice, against each other to see who serves it up best. Less surprising is the wealth of man-on-the-street interviews included, featuring some of our city's finest at their drunkest. more ›

Two More Arrests Made in Pizza Mart Murder

At least two more suspects have now been arrested in the Aug. 18 slaying of a pizza restaurant owner in the Edgewood neighborhood, WTOP's Mark Segraves reports. One suspect, Shanika Robinson, had already been arrested in the killing of Pizza Mart co-owner Shahabuddin Rana a few weeks ago, but now her brother, Leon Robinson, has also been taken into custody and charged with first degree murder. Segraves also tells DCist that a third suspect, whose name we still don't know, has been arrested in the time since this initial report. Police allege that Rana was killed after a false marriage arrangement between Shanika Robinson and Rana's brother fell apart. Rana had been paying Robinson $500 a week to be married to his brother so that he could get a green card, according to police, but at some point Rana stopped the payments. Further complicating the sordid case is the death of Terrance Green, a D.C. police officer who committed suicide earlier this month after he was subpoenaed to appear before a grand jury in the case.

Cause of Death Determined in Pizza Mart Killing

The Metropolitan Police Department finally put out a formal press release yesterday on the Monday night killing of 44-year-old Shahabuddin Rana, the co-owner of the Edgewood Pizza Mart. But the release contained zero new information, and declined to offer a cause of death, pending an autopsy. Well now City Desk has the cause of death, courtesy the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner: 'Rana died from "blunt head trauma" as well as "stab and incised wounds," according to the office’s spokesperson Beverly Fields.' D.C. Police have been passing out fliers all over the neighborhood around the Pizza Mart, located at 2300 4th Street NE, in the hopes of prompting someone with information about what happened to Rana to come forward. more ›

ID on Pizza Mart Body

WJLA has the ID of the man who was found dead inside a Pizza Mart in Edgewood on Tuesday: 44-year-old Shahabuddin Rana, of Silver Spring, Md., was a co-owner of the pizza shop with his brother. Police are still holding back on a specific cause of death, but they are treating it as a homicide and have alluded to some kind of trauma to the body. That Pizza Mart is a 24-7 carryout operation, and it appears the killer must have entered the store at some point overnight on Monday night and attacked Rana. more ›

Overheard in D.C.: Playing by the Rules

Overheard in D.C.: Playing by the Rules

We're all familiar with The Rules. You know, that iron clad system by which every woman can land herself the man of her dreams and keep him, if only she's willing to act like the most obnoxious kind of person you've ever met. Of course, men have rules, too. They just don't publish them. They've been passed down in locker rooms, cigar-choked men's-only clubs, and fraternity houses for time immemorial. The fact is, I could... more ›

Reconsidering the Jumbo Slice

Thanks to Rock Creek Rambler, we learn that Pizza Mart, home of 18th Street's original jumbo pizza slice (or something like that depending on what pizza entrepreneur you talk to) was shut down recently for health code violations including, according to the Post's culling of municipal reports, "debris, no certified food supervisor and unclean food contact surfaces and equipment." If we read the report correctly, the restaurant was closed two Fridays back and reopened that Saturday. more ›

Tomato Drama

Tomato Drama

D.C. foodies out there may notice that there's something missing from their dishes. Restaurants are cutting back on the use of tomatoes because of rising food costs -- a bad combination of flooding in California, all those hurricanes in Florida and insects coming across the border from Mexico is to blame. more ›

Examining the Jumbo Slice

The Washington City Paper's cover story this week examines the Adams Morgan phenomenon the Jumbo Slice in laudable detail. more ›

A Pizza Challenge

A Pizza Challenge

The Post's "You Haven't Lived Here If You Haven't ..." feature on Sunday traveled to Adams Morgan to enjoy a jumbo slice at Pizza Mart. By featuring just Pizza Mart, we aren't sure if the Post crowned the jumbo slices that can be found at 2445 18th St. NW as the best on the block, as there are others. (For atmosphere, we're partial to Pizza Napoli. There's nothing like post-last call revelry while chowing down on a jumbo slice all set to Bangrha dance mixes or Bollywood soundtracks ... sort of a Naples meets Mumbai type of deal.) more ›

18th Street Falafel and Twist and Shout[ing]

18th Street Falafel and Twist and Shout[ing]

Indeed, the 18th Street strip's fast food options consist of McDonald's, Julia's Empanadas and the three giant pizza slice outlets. So the Amsterdam Falafel Shop is probably a breath of fresh air for the neighborhood's quick and cheap eats sector. (Of course, up and around the corner on Columbia Road, there are plenty of great places to get Mexican and Central American eats.) more ›
