Dogs all over the region are hoping for a snow day so they can wear their winter sweaters, just like this sweet pink and white stripey one melissa.suzanne's dog wore recently while on a hike in Great Falls. The smooth selective focus and dim lighting suggest a slightly sinister encounter on that lonely path, so it's a good thing she has her dog to ward off any Snow Monsters.

It's tulip time again. Cherry blossoms are great, sure, but their beauty pales in comparison to the tulip. Karon captured a field of them downtown. I like the nearly-but-not-quite-there symmetry of this field. Did you know there are two tulip "libraries" maintained by the National Park Service in the DC area? Now you do. (EXIF)

We don't often use monument photos for Photo of the Day, mostly because we've seen them all before. But once in a while, we see a new perspective on the familiar, or a picture executed so well it takes our breath away. Flickr user eschn3am executed what must be the perfect picture of the Lincoln Memorial. Using a neutral density filter, he took a 10-minute exposure with the fading light of day. Using such a long exposure makes the clouds go milky and the well lit, static monument stand out. Check out a few more of his experiments at the Lincoln. (EXIF)

The signs, the lights and lighting, the darkness inside all conspire to distract you from the girl with the glare. But after an evening of photographing the revelers at Clarendon's St. Patrick's Day parade, photographer erin m wasn't going to be dissuaded from getting the shot, no matter how piercing the look. I'm sure some of you are thinking exactly what those thought bubbles are saying: when will they stop talking about DCist Exposed?! It'll be a while yet, because even though the show is opening on Saturday night, it runs through March 21. Sanjay Suchak's photo (sans captions) and 46 other stunning prints will be on display and for the buying. So come on down to the opening reception on Saturday and find a bit of art for that empty spot on the wall.

When Atlantic Starr belted out "Secret Lovers" in the 1980s, I bet they were not talking about the pair that Tracy Clayton caught gallivanting on the streets of D.C. In addition to being a good picture with a great title, the riffing going on in the comments is sure to put a smile on your face. (EXIF)

Jazz is motion. Music that never stops, doesn't rest. Each element distinct, yet harmonious. Flickr user Nivad captured the movement on HR-57's stage, showing the motion in a one second slice of time. If you like jazz, you should check out what's going on This Week in Jazz. (EXIF)

Six men, facing the bright lights. They wait. They are ready to pounce. They look like they are ready for anything to hit them. They weren't ready for the come-from-behind antics of jim_darling, though.

Baby, it's cold out there. And . . . every.seven . . . has the proof: The Potomac river is starting to ice up, even up at Great Falls. I'll admit, I'm a fan of the ice and cold, and the bleak reflections of the trees, hibernating, waiting for the thaw, just add to the feeling of a long cold winter.

From Thanksgiving to New Year's Day, we tend to be on the road a lot. Planes, trains, and automobiles writ large and often annoying. Even at the best of times, flying can be a trying experience. Getting home, out of those cramped seats, is a relief. Walking across the bridge to the parking lot at National Airport is a sure sign I'm home, and andertho's shot confirms, again, just how beautiful, almost serene, DCA can be. (EXIF)

There's quite a few good pictures in the Flickr pool today, but this guitarist caught my eye. Looks like he was sitting in the shade in Adams Morgan, playing his music and chilling out when furcafe came across him and captured this summery scene rather nicely.

DCist Pool contributor lorigoldberg captured the old time feeling of this tailor's shop. The old sewing machines, the reflections, the Diana's trademarked softness all add up to a picture that matches today's grayness.

Panography is a photography technique to take multiple images of a scene around a central point and then marry the resulting images by overlapping them with minimal touch up. It lets you explore the area being photographed more completely than a panorama, and provides for a cool effect.

Waiting for paint to dry can be quite a boring endeavor, but someone decided they didn't need to wait to add their own "artistic flair" to this freshly painted wall. User * Chris D captured the tagging and the cool colors. (EXIF)

Cycle the Ghost Round's photo of what appears to be a 1949 Chevy Fleetline is a fall classic. A quiet Georgetown street, leaves blanketing the car, and a crisp autumn day with blue skies and fluffy clouds; just idyllic.

It's November. The last of the leaves are falling from their branches, the squirrels are dropping some of their take, and the local drunks are moving inside, leaving their discarded bottles behind. Wasting no time, Ronnie R captured this tableau on the first day of the month – a perfect submission for the sadly now infrequently updated Treebox Vodka. (EXIF)

Fall colors are fleeting, and a large part of why fall is my favorite season. Flickr user brents pix managed to capture this leaf on a bench at its most colorful. Here's hoping this weekend's weather will give us all a chance to see the colors before they are washed away.

A big group of Flickr contributors went out to capture images of last night's Harvest moon. It was difficult to choose just one, but today's POTD from Flickr user erin_m is a striking example, with the bright sphere hovering over the Capitol building. I see the moon behind the shadow of the cloud, ready to pounce. We'll see if we can't post some more Harvest moon shots later on.

He loves me; He loves me not; He loves me... We may be making history on DCist today, all. I don't know if a food photograph has ever been selected as POTD, but it's bound to happen if you let the foodies fill in. This photo of some delicious bresaola from LaTur leaves me feeling both hungry and jealous. Hungry because it's lunchtime, and jealous that I won't be enjoying a platter of cured meat this noon hour. Almost as delicate as rose petals, these thin slices of meat are prosciutto's much less salty, more complex flavored bovine cousin. If you haven't tried it, look for it on menus at places like 2Amy's (which is where this photo was taken), Dino, Sonoma, or at your local meat counter or cheesemonger (Cheesetique in Del Ray has a particularly good version). Kudos to our DCist photogs and their great food photography! EXIF.

It looks like someone took a lot of time to set up this scene in miniature, or to hand-draw those little lambs in their own verdant pasture. Not so. This photo comes to us from pamelaviola, and is probably a product of a little tilt-shift or some digital manipulation to make it look that way. At any rate, the color of the grass and selective focus around the lambs lands this photo on the POTD pedestal for today. It wasn't an easy choice, though! You photogs have had a busy weekend. Keep it up!

Happy Monday, D.C. Today's POTD comes to us from pixlesie, who captured an image illustrating nature's resiliency and persistence despite the barriers humankind puts in its way. Well, it shows how well a tree can do in a pot on the sunny roof of the Air and Space Museum, at least. I like the lighting in this photo as well, which appears to be the product of the morning sun (the description says it's the south side of the building). Alas, no EXIF data to confirm my suspicions.

Finally, a couple of reminders. First, although we are, as always, extremely grateful to those who choose to tag their photos with "DCist", we'd be even more grateful if contributors limited themselves to a few photos per day. The rule, to whatever extent there is one, is 3 or 4, but if you've got a few more more compelling images we'd certainly like to see those, too. However, if you've got a 120-photo set of pictures of rocks that you think are kind of interesting, adding "DCist" to the batch tags is something to avoid. One or two of those rock-shots is sufficient -- you can rest assured that if it piques our interest we'll be checking out the rest of the recent entries in your photostream. Adding too many photos clutters things up and makes it easy to overlook other worthy photographers.

Sometimes at PotD, funny trumps all other considerations. When you add into that an appeal to the comic geek, a subtle self-portrait, and a ghostly image of a panda (you know how we love pandas here at DCist), you've got a winner. Flickr user JamesCalder narrowly beat out this great image of a modern store for lease in the amusing sign competition for today. EXIF data is here.

As we ring in the new year POTD-style, thanks to all those who put up great photos in the DCist Flickr pool of their holiday time in the city. MatthewBradley had some great shots up, especially some shots of the motorcade passing by with President Ford's remains. One that caught my eye was this black and white shot of Penn Ave. up towards the Capitol dome. Alas, the dome is covered by fog, which...

I've somehow been assigned the slot of taking over DCist Heather's POTD duties this week as she leaves for a long trip to India, despite the fact that I know next-to-nothing about photography. But nevertheless, here I am, and this shot by Flickr user calcitrate caught my eye. EXIF data is here. Other notable shots included a classic sunset, and this explosion of Christmas lights....

Whoa. You know how we said we weren't looking for three hundred versions of the Washington Monument, unless you've got a really sweet one? This is a really sweet one. Flickr user dimples453 got serious on this obelisk. EXIF.

With so many great photos from this past weekend (High Life through a straw!) in the DCist tag pool over at Flickr, choosing just one for today's PotD wasn't easy. Ultimately Flickr user Night Heron's breakdancing photo of the B-Boy competition from the Crafty Bastard Arts Fair won out. There is no EXIF data for this shot.
