Teddy Returns to Presidents Race After Sudden Absence

We couldn't help but notice that perennial loser Teddy Roosevelt was absent from the Presidents Race during the Nationals' game against the Marlins on Saturday. Given how badly the game went, it was just another disappointment among many for Nats fans that night. But what happened? Had Teddy finally succumbed to the crippling depression of never winning? Did he run off to establish another national park?

Poor, poor Teddy. The guy just cannot catch a break. It's bad enough that he's usually drifting off during the most vital point of the Presidents Race, or running the wrong way, or having his name spelled incorrectly. But at least things never got violent -- that is, until Friday night.

Both WTOP and Comcast SportsNet had video crews out at Sunday's tryouts for the Washington Nationals Presidents Race. Sadly, it doesn't look like anyone ate dirt this year.

Just when you thought the campaign season was over ... via Let Teddy Win, we're reminded that the Washington Nationals are once again holding tryouts to become a racing president.

Nationals Team President Stan Kasten appeared alongside racing Teddy Roosevelt in an interview on ESPN to discuss why Teddy just can't win the Presidents Race. In the video clip above, Kasten states that one day, Teddy will win.

Last week we told you about Nationals' Presidents Race tryouts, and it looks like quite a few intrepid bloggers went down to RFK Stadium to don giant president heads and try their racing abilities. Both Christmas Ape from Deadspin and Bruce from 567 Miles from Home blogged about the experience, and it sounds like a pretty funny one. There were also some mainstream reporters from the Times and WTOP.

Tired of seeing Teddy Roosevelt lose the Nationals' Presidents Race? Be him yourself. The Nats web site has a signup for part time jobs as the racing presidents. The qualifications are pretty basic: be between 5'7" and 6'6" (sorry Jon Rauch), be able to run the baseline wearing the 45 pound suits, and be available for about 40 percent of the Nats' home games (opening day at the new stadium is April 2 March 30). If anyone here actually gets the job, please tell us why Teddy never wins.

It's hardly the nicest stadium, but RFK Stadium holds a venerable place in Washington sports history. Open since 1962, when it was called District of Columbia Stadium, the venue has hosted two MLB franchises, the Washington Redskins during their glory years, the most successful MLS club ever, international soccer tournaments, concerts, and on and on. It even hosted Team America! Sunday's final Nats home game, a 5-3 win over the Phillies, isn't the last...

Maybe it was the indignity of the Marlins spoiling the last Opening Game ever in RFK. Maybe it was the insufferable Aramark concessionaires, who insist that it's perfectly acceptable to run out of buns in the fifth inning of the first damn game. Maybe it's the humiliation of the long winless streak to the other presidents. There's no telling. Something, though, was terribly amiss in that giant head of Teddy Roosevelt's during the Nat's 9-2...
