Donné Malloy is fanatical about fresh food. She ran the H Street Farmers Market for six years when she was a manager at Fresh Farm Markets, but a couple of years ago she decided she was ready to venture out on her own. The NoMa Farmers Market, running from June through late October, is the first market Malloy is running under her new brand.

Getting Down with Drum Circle's Dance Instructor
Few events showcase the diversity of the District more than the weekly drum circle in Malcolm X/Meridian Hill Park. Many colorful figures grace this scene, but few stand out more than Thomas House, the drum circle's de facto dance master.
CapitalBop: The Rise of a One Stop Online Shop for D.C. Jazz
In one of DCist's earliest jazz posts, we lamented that local jazz artists and venues were lagging behind other parts of the D.C. arts scene in getting information on the internet. Things have changed for the better during the past four years. In 2010, CapitalBop emerged as a welcome addition to the District's jazz community. The site is as much a venture in advocacy and activism for this music as it is a foray into jazz journalism, making it as comprehensive an online resource as this city has ever had.
BloomBars Fights to Stay Afloat
During this economic downturn, DCist has reported on several arts institutions that are facing financial challenges as a direct result of the crisis. Unfortunately, there is yet another addition to that list -- BloomBars, the non-profit community gallery and performance space located in Columbia Heights.
The Bohemian Caverns Jazz Orchestra, Six Months In
A gem of the local jazz scene can be found on Monday nights at Bohemian Caverns, when the historic club hosts its house band, the Bohemian Caverns Jazz Orchestra. The BCJO boasts a rotating cast of the area's finest talent. Every week, casual jazz fans and aficionados alike can enjoy a diverse repertoire from the 17-piece ensemble, ranging from the big band classics of Ellington and Basie to original compositions by members of the group. Not bad for a mere $7 cover.
New International Music Venture Launches Tonight at Līv
Being an international city, Washington, D.C. has no shortage of international music. But most of those global sounds are found in larger concert halls, with relatively few opportunities for enthusiasts to hear what is going on in the world's club and underground music scenes. A new venture, re/route, is seeking to change that, beginning with an event featuring Chilean rapper Ana Tijoux tonight at Līv.
DCist Profile: Ellington School Jazz Director Davey Yarborough
The problems surrounding the District's public school system have been well documented here at DCist. Despite such controversies, DCPS does have a few bright spots, one of which is the Duke Ellington School of the Arts.
The Women of Batala Washington Keep the Beat Going
You've probably seen them around, either practicing, performing at a community event, on local television, or marching down the street in a parade. They are hard to miss, after all. An infectious percussion ensemble comprised of a couple dozen or so colorfully dressed women isn't something one sees everyday. Of course, we're talking about Batala Washington, the all-women's drum corps that has brought smiles and the spirit of rhythm to the District since its formation in 2007.
La Maison Française: A Cultural Resource for D.C.'s Francophiles
By now everyone in the District knows about the very popular events taking place at the House of Sweden, and many of the other embassies around the city. Though somewhat out of the way, and that may not be a bad thing for those hoping to avoid crowds, the French Embassy's cultural wing, La Maison Française, also deserves prominent mention on this list. Ranging from film festivals to concerts, the venue hosts events to showcase the arts of the French diaspora.
The Sitar Arts Center: Bringing the Arts to Neighborhood Kids
"There are two things that I hear from everyone who visits," said Ed Spitzberg, the Sitar Arts Center's Executive Director. "They say, 1. 'Wow, what a wonderful place,' and 2. 'I never knew this was here.'"
